Though Eureka remains one of Syfy’s most popular TV series, the cable channel cancelled it earlier this week. What’s even more perplexing is that Syfy announced that Eureka had been renewed for an abbreviated sixth season last week. They even issued a statement to assure viewers that they hoped to continue the show beyond that. Why was it cancelled?
Eureka executive producer Amy Berg shed some light on the move via Twitter, indicating that Syfy didn’t want to cancel the show but financially, Comcast mandated it. She said, “We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, #Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”
The cast and crew were in the midst of filming the end of season five when the cancellation news came down. With such short notice, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to bring the show to a satisfying conclusion with such short notice.
Thankfully, Syfy has now ordered one additional episode so that, as Berg puts it, “we can end the series on our terms.” She indicated that she’s working on the series finale and it will be shot the week of the 21st.
For those keeping count, this means that there are 19 episodes of Eureka left; five more for this season and 14 for season five.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear there will be a true series finale? How would you like to see the show end?

Eureka is my favourite show on any channel and I really look forward to seeing it every season. I can’t believe they cancelled it! I’m watching an Episode of Warehouse 13 and there’s a mention of Eureka in it. I am so very disappointed. Really really disappointed.
This is a fantastic show , one of the few on TV.respect the intelligence of the viewers with quality programming, not mindless crap we can find everywhere .
If you recall, when “STARGATE-SG1” first came out, it was presented on the premium channel SHOWTIME. I see no reason why another premium channel cannot pick up “EUREKA” and save us from SyFy’s cheapness. Even if SyFy won’t cough up the bucks for good quality special effects, it could prevail upon Comcast to formulate a few 2-hour movies a couple of times a year much the same way they did for such favorites as “COLUMBO”, “MACMILLAN AND WIFE”, and “HART TO HART”.
Well score another one for for bad banal programming. Way to go Comcast and syfy. So reality (another word for cheap crap) TV for the brainless masses wins again. It makes me so sad that this unique, clever and funny show has been cancelled and all the stereotypical formulaic repetitive brainless cloned dross is still going to be on air. If programming decisions like this keep on going I will soon be able to sell my TV. There is hardly anything worth watching on TV anymore. If your like me and dont like reality TV, game shows, soaps, sport, talent… Read more »
Hey Comcast, get rid of some of the dead wood and you can afford to finance great shows like Eureka. Who needs the Golf channel, replace that with a scene of paint drying, nobody will notice the difference. Religious channels should be made to pay just like every other paid programming show.
NO, I am NOT happy!!!!!! This is LITERALLY my favorite show!!!!!!! Makes no sense at all! What is going on with these networks?! OMG!!!!!!
Syfy? The change to newer science fiction shows, Eureka, Stargate SG1 and others showed promise, that those of us who enjoy true Fiction/Fantasy entertainment would have a place. Unfortunately, the more recent trend toward the “Did you see that?” phony reality shows and the phony wrestling shows (fiction yes, not Science Fiction) are not worth my time. Eureka is the best SF show out there! Jaime Paglia and his team developed a truly new idea with Eureka. They put together a tremendous cast and crew and gave us something to look forward to, even if the seasons were short. When… Read more »
Eureka is the only reason I found out about and watch Warehouse 13, Haven and Alphas. I am not Sci-Fi junkie so if Eureka never existed I would have never known about the other shows. Big mistake pulling a highly watched show. Eureka makes up for it’s losses by bringing viewers to the SyFy shows. Hopefully another company will have the smarts and pickup Eureka. It definitely appeals to all audiences and not just Sci-Fi geeks. It will be missed. I am missing it already.
Save Eureka!!! I watch three shows during the year and Eureka is one of them. I love it! Please please please save this show. Someone else wrote that it is time to cancel their Comcast subscription. Great idea. Without Eureka, the balance is heavily shifting toward cancelling all TV reception and just going with the cheapest fast internet connection. I know I can do better than my Comcast bundle. At least it is getting easier to make a decision. One of the networks should pick up this awesome show!
I have to admit that the show was getting a little silly and predictable. I admit that maintaining a lighter side of dark weird science has to be so difficult, but Beverly should have been involved more being more of a constant threat – I don’t know just my opinion. I loved the actors!
I am so furious with SyFy & Comcast for letting go of a good thing. Eureka has been a joy to watch from the beginning. So much drama, comedy, technology and especially the characters have made this such a great show. I am so tired to good shows being cancelled and we are left with nothing but reality crap. Come on COMCAST, get your head out of the sand, stop thinking of nothing but profits & ratings, think about US, the faithful watchers who need good quality TV. That’s what EUREKA is. Uncancel the cancel, bring it back. And why… Read more »
It’s a crying shame that Comcast has cancelled this wonderful show. One of my close friends got me hooked on it less that 4 months ago. I got on Netflix and watched EVERY single episode they had. Then, I started recording the new ones. Either another company or network absolutely needs to pick this show up or Comcast ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO RECONSIDER their truly idiotic decision. Eureka, without a doubt, is a major contributor to keeping that network popular, as well as alive. Also, what’s going to happen to “Powerful Mondays?” Oh yeah, they will cease to exist. Who cares… Read more »
Personally, I think the quality of Eureka was hurt when they did the “time dimensional” change in the original show premise. I have missed the original character interaction and feel the story lines took a hit because of that. I agree that SyFy has some of the worse TV movies ever – story lines and acting. I love Haven and Alphas and hope they don’t find a way to screw them up or that if they do that they find their way to another cable station. I also miss Farscape!! I hope they have another Farscape marathon some day!!
I honestly wonder if the people who are running (ruining) the network even understand what good programming is? There has not been a made for SyFy movie made that I have even wanted to watch in the last few years.
I like the writing on the series Haven and Eureka is not that bad; it has slipped a bit this last season though. Still these actually have viewers who want to follow them.
Isn’t that the whole idea of the entertainment industry?
A great show, I hate that it is being cancelled, you can dumb down the special effects, the stories are what makes the show great.
