Though Eureka remains one of Syfy’s most popular TV series, the cable channel cancelled it earlier this week. What’s even more perplexing is that Syfy announced that Eureka had been renewed for an abbreviated sixth season last week. They even issued a statement to assure viewers that they hoped to continue the show beyond that. Why was it cancelled?
Eureka executive producer Amy Berg shed some light on the move via Twitter, indicating that Syfy didn’t want to cancel the show but financially, Comcast mandated it. She said, “We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, #Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”
The cast and crew were in the midst of filming the end of season five when the cancellation news came down. With such short notice, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to bring the show to a satisfying conclusion with such short notice.
Thankfully, Syfy has now ordered one additional episode so that, as Berg puts it, “we can end the series on our terms.” She indicated that she’s working on the series finale and it will be shot the week of the 21st.
For those keeping count, this means that there are 19 episodes of Eureka left; five more for this season and 14 for season five.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear there will be a true series finale? How would you like to see the show end?

More proof that Syfy is a *explitive* ridiculous channel. Once Eureka is off the air, I’m done with them. Wrestling and movies that don’t even earn a B-grade in their horridness? Yeah. THAT’S science fiction, for sure. Excuse me while I go vomit.
This is really sad. Comcast should cancel itself.
My heart is broken…. this is a wonderful show…why are you doing this? Eureka is one of the best shows on TV…..WHY…………….
You add Wrestling and cancel Eureka? Syfy, what is wrong with you? You had a wonderful intelligent show that we could sit and watch as a family and have wonderful disucssions about the endless possibilities of science. Instead you give us sweaty, neanterthals who show how stupid Americans can be….at least Sumo wrestlers keep their mouths SHUT! There are other decent Syfy shows on, but NONE with the gentle wonder of life and the sweetness shown in the faces of the actors. Please, drop the wrestling and leave us to our programing that makes our children THINK. They even turn… Read more »
i enjoy eureka. i looked forward to it when it is on and cant wait for the new seasons to start. comcast has always cared bout itself and not bout its customers. they want to charge big bucks for their service but wont pay big bucks to keep a good show like eureka on air. i recommend everyone send a email to comcast and let them know of your disappointment!
No more Eureka? Disappointing. SyFy will keep Warehouse 13 (good idea gone silly) and Alphas (annoying characters), while letting this gem go? Not very smart.
Well, since Comcast sucks to start with. And the show is “to expensive” how are they going to pay for anything when they cancel shows that do draw an audience? I have always like the SCI-FI channel including all the poorly written, poorly acted made of SCI-FI movies. But honestly I watched it for Eureka. With that gone, so am I. And I am sure that I am not the only one that feels that way.
Comcast……….why to go and screw up more TV. You shouldn’t be allowed to touch TV content. I wish for your day of bankruptcy.
Great! make a show with interesting plot twists and wonderful effects compete for profitability with the incredibly banal reality-based stuff that pollutes most of the airwaves. If comcast had controlled the golden age of television it would have been the bronze age! As a New Mexican, I’ve loved the thinly-veiled homages to the town of Los Alamos. But as an educated viewer I’ve loved the perspective of all the gee whiz super-science from the perspective of the down-to-earth put-upon sheriff. The writing is clever and the cast is endearing. Score one more bit of stupidity from the boneheaded folks who… Read more »
I don’t buy it. You can sell this show to any major network. Eureka costs less than desperate housewives – and Any network would love to have an instant hit. If you don’t sell the show to another network, you are just not trying.
SOOOOO disappointed!!!
Producers are getting dumber and dumber. I love this show. Let it go to the internet, like they are doing with the soaps. I’d pay to see it. Then SOMEONE will get rich off the shows, these producers constantly amaze me trying to decide what’s BEST for US.
Sci-fi shows are a great choice for the Internet, considering much of their fanbase is tech-savvy. I’d pay to see Eureka — even though my connection isn’t that great, I can still manage to watch the occasional episode online.
The cancelation is stunning! This is what happens when accountants take over Art!
I can’t believe that they’ve cancelled another fantastic show. I am so tired of this that I’m
seriously thinking of just cancelling my cable. What’s the point? If I have to watch one more reality show I think I’m going to puke
I totally agree with your statement. I think comcast should pull it’s head out while you get the point. I like the show and how it made science cool. Or maybe do what stargate sg1 do do a two direct to dvd movie that ties up the show currently. It goes to show you that TV producer’s no longer care about putting out good show’s anymore.
Or maybe the exectuive producer’s should take the show to other networks that can see that it’s a great show.
This is another of the unbelievably STUPID decisions made in the long, long line of stupid decisions made by Comcast…. When a company thinks with its accounting department, it’s eventually going to nickel and dime itself to a slow but sure death.
I totally agree, SyFy has some the best shows on TV. What will be left watching wrestling? Not me.
