Though its performance hasn’t been stellar, FOX has finally ordered a full season of Lie to Me. What does this mean for the sophomore drama’s future?
Lie to Me follows Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth), a human lie detector, and his team of experts who help law officials solve their most difficult cases. The cast also includes Kelli Williams, Brendan Hines, Mekhi Phifer, and Monica Raymund.
The dramatic series is currently in a plum spot on the FOX schedule, sitting behind successful House on Monday nights. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold onto much of the Hugh Laurie show’s audience. This past week, for example, House was first in the 18-49 demographic (4.6) and second in total viewers (11.95 million), opposite the Dancing with the Stars finals. Lie to Me shed 40% of the lead-in audience in both areas, attracting a 2.7 and 7.16 million.
Despite the so-so ratings performance, FOX has finally given the drama a full season and ordered nine additional installments. The decision comes several weeks after the decision to order more episodes of other shows like Glee and The Cleveland Show.
It will be some time before viewers see these episodes of Lie to Me however. The drama will be leaving the airwaves in mid-January, making way for the return of 24. FOX has indicated that Lie to Me will return at some point in the spring.
Unfortunately, the full season order is more likely of an indication that FOX anticipates they’ll be needing more original programming than their being satisfied with Lie to Me’s performance. What’s more, the show being put on hiatus isn’t likely to help the ratings.
At this point, Lie to Me looks like it will be firmly “on the bubble” come May. A third season isn’t assured and the show’s future will likely be decided by the strengths or weaknesses of FOX’s pilots for the 2010-11 season.
What do you think? Is Lie to Me worth watching or do you think FOX could do better? Would you move it to another night rather than put it on hiatus?

Lie to me and keep it on forever it is one of my favorite shows. Why take all the good stuff off.
This is a great show! Please, please keep it on. It’s also educational and helps me notice facial expressions in folks I encounter! It’s also always a great mystery to be solved. One of my favorite shows!
i think lie to me was an awesome show and they need to bring it back on!!
I’m also a die-hard House fan, and find Lie to Me to be just as “attention grabbing” and addictive. I love the main and supporting characters in both shows. The intelligence and quirkiness of Laurie and Roth are what make the shows what they are. I’m looking forward to the return of Lie to Me, and many more seasons of both of these two shows!
Absolutely love Lie to Me. Probably my number 1 choice of things to watch.
I love this show. Currently trolling the ‘net to find out when the season continues. What is up?
I love this show. I am busy during the week due to work and being a single mom. BUT my DVR is set to record it. I’m not a House fan but Tim Roth is a great actor and the cast of Lie To Me is GREAT! Please bring it back!
Seems to me that if you love “House,” you’ll love “Lie to Me.” And I do. And if you find Laurie quirky but lovable, you’ll probably feel the same way about Roth. And I do. What can’t be predicted based on anything I know anything about is how the networks will decide. And I don’t. Never could. I’ve had programs I loved instantly snatched away without warning.
I do want to mention, though, that when I started watching house, it’s time slot changed enought that I had to search for it. And look where it is now.
I think Lie To Me Captures an incredible skill–the skill to detect lies and emotions and use that in crime cases. It is more exciting than House and there’s a lot more action. While Lightman is courageous and determined to spot the lie, House is a reckless jerk that only cares about solving a medical case. Although they are completely different, I feel like there’s a lot to learn from both shows. I would have actually loved to see the two characters meet in some sort of a special episode and learn something from each other. After all, they’re pretty… Read more »
I think this is a very entertaining program. I hope it continues into season three. But with my luck in picking winners it is probably doomed. I was a huge fan of Pushing Daisies so…
Lie to Me is a fantastic program. The premise is excellent, the science behind it fascinating and the story lines are great. It would be a terrible shame were Fox to cancel this series. I have looked for it each week in hopes that it was on, and I’m surely not the only one. Fox: Don’t cancel Lie to Me!
well… this show has pretty much inspired me. I actually want to go study with Paul Ekman, this stuff is so interesting. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to watch it “when it airs” so instead I watch it when it comes out on Hulu…. so Fox… please keep Lie to Me, and if you didn’t know, I’m sure there are many more viewers than you think, just watching online… oh yeah and one more thing… i think that channels like fox should actually give us good weekend tv… instead of all this reality and cartoon comedy swearing crap >.<
Its really sad that TV networks cancel the intelligent shows, I find it hard to believe that people in the world as so stupid. Lie to me is a great show, and so was LIFE, but the dumb world we live is just plain dumb
It’s funny how we have to tolerate shows like Cops that show idiots getting arrested, and the Apprentice (who cares), and numerous dull reality shows, and when a truly good drama series comes along that actually offers something different for a change…they take it off indefinitely. Please bring back what I consider to be a refreshing new show with great actors that really entertains and holds your interest for the hour that it is on. If a major network doesn’t keep it on, I hope a cable network will pick it up to keep the fans happy!!! I’m looking forward… Read more »
Please return Lie to Me to the Fox lineup in the Spring! I have missed this terrific show and would hate to see it go off the air permanently. I have enjoyed all of the actors…it is one of my favorite shows!
