No wonder Netflix cancelled Marco Polo. FierceCable reports the streaming platform lost $200 million on the recently axed TV series.
Netflix cancelled the historical drama earlier this month after only two seasons. The show chronicled the early days of the infamous explorer as he traveled through the Mongol Empire. The cast included Lorenzo Richelmy, Rick Yune, Benedict Wong, Claudia Kim, Remy Hii, Olivia Cheng, Mahesh Jadu, Tom Wu, Gabriel Byrne, and Michelle Yeoh.
While Netflix has not confirmed the number, FierceCable does report the show lost the streaming service around $200 million over the course of its two seasons. And though Netflix does not report ratings, Marco Polo never did receive the kind of critical attention the platform’s other original series, like Orange is the New Black and Stranger Things—have.
Earlier this year, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told The Hollywood Reporter that Marco Polo managed “what it was supposed to do.” No other reason was given for the cancellation, but it wouldn’t be surprising that the $200 million loss was part of the decision.
What do you think? Did you watch Marco Polo? Would you have watched a third season?
Just finished 2nd season and no surprise was dissappointed to read the serie being cancelled. I loved it, my girlfriend loved it; all of my friends that have seen it have absolutely loved it! We pray for at least a 3rd season. Come on critics – you should love this too!
My wife and I loved. Well done. Martial arts are insane. Acting great. The treachery, the back stabbing. Sub plots. Everything worked. And the images and costumes were beautiful. Bring it back
I was expecting at least a 3rd season
Really upset it isn’t returning!!Bring it back on!! There was nothing like it!
Loved the shoe..really upset it’s nite returning!! Bring it back!!
This article just makes me question exactly how production costs on streaming services’ original shows are paid for.
I’m so disappointed. Loved the show and was hooked.
I’m so disappointed in Netflix this show is by far one of the best shows they’ve produced, everyone I’ve recommended it to has loved it. Beautiful sets, intriguing characters, and great story lines with just the right amount of creative license. IMO on par with Game of Thrones, in fact I’d rather watch a third season of Marco Polo to be honest.
I hesitated to watch the show because I thought it would be boring and subtitled. But when I started watching I couldn’t get enough!
Everything about it was superb!
I have watched the seasons and still can’t get over of a great show being cancelled. I can see the reasons and I think the biggest one is some people won’t watch it just because of the title of the show I know I was one for a while until I got bored and said yes I’ll watch it. I started watching it when the 2nd season just finished. I love the show and it saddens me to see it will not finish.
Please don’t judge a book by its cover
I just finished with the final episode of s2, and I’m deeply saddened to find out that the series will not be continued. It hurts!
The artors are GREAT, the characters are vivid, the scenery is amazing and the story is compelling and exciting.
I rate “Marco Polo” 10/10 – one of the best series I have ever seen.
Please be creative, and find a way to bring back the series – we need closure…
I have finally completed both season 1&2 of the original series “Marco Polo”; I am completely at a loss to hear that the show will not be returning for a 3rd season. I thouroly enjoyed the show more so then expected. It was unique and different. Despit, however exaggerated or fluffed up the story line is; it was still a refreshing change. Please bring Marco Polo back.
yes!!!
Can’t believe they are cancelling this show. My husband and I really enjoyed watching both seasons and were looking forward to the third season.
We LOVE this Marco Polo series!! Richness, depth, excellent story and actors!
Please do a THIRD season!
