Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I like the episode. I didn’t like the fact that y’all ended the series without warning. I really loved this show. I wish you would bring it back. At least bring it back as reruns in the correct order
how come she is not an old lady spirit? is she not suppose to be exactly like she died, same face same clothes.
it sucked, worse ending ever.
This is way after it has been of the air but I just spent two months watching all in a row. They were forced to make a two episode finale’ into the one and it shows but it was a wonderful way to end, showing she would be ok, the girls would be (notice Bridgette had five published books on 80 year old Allison’s shelf.) And she had a great life….. Until she passes and joins her match/.
I faithfully watched this series when it was on and have binge-watched a number of times. The finale to this show did not jive with the rest of the series. Heck, neither did half season 7. I did cry a little for the final episode, but nowhere near as much as I cried while watching “Means to an End”. There was no goodbye to the daughters we had watched grow up, no lead up to the flight, just roll credits and done. For such a great show (easily in my top 10), they really could have pulled together a much… Read more »
One of the Best series I have watched. Fun and entertaining and really easy to believe. Patricia and the whole cast played their roles to perfection. Pity it had to end
It seemed the show had to end suddenly and so the last episode seemed rushed? I didn’t like the final episode.
I loved this tv show. Every episode was well thought out and every minute was used efficiently. I can’t say the same with the final one though.
Literally the series final had me crying about half of the time. The thing that really made this show great was how believable and lovable the family was! The whole time I started thinking back on things that might have indicated that this would happen to poor Joe. Obviously I recall Marjorie predicting that there were dark days ahead, but does anyone else remember how one of the girls saw a dead Joe hanging from a tree after a different plane crash in one of the earlier seasons? I know that this episode must have been written when the series… Read more »
Yes! I’m currently watching and in Season 2 Episode 2, Allison has a dream that Joe will die in a plane crash but believes it to be their upcoming trip to SLC. In the episode, if you look closely, Allison picks up Joe’s wallet and you can clearly see photos of a teenager daughter (older than any of their children at this point in the show). This automatically made me search online to see if Joe dies in a plane crash in a later season and looks like he does!
Yes I remember how they saw him dead in the beginning of the series that’s what was in my mind the whole time!
Hated it! Wish I had not even watched it as it ruined my thoughts of the whole series. I get that that Joe and Allison are together in eternity but the lead up was not well presented and not interesting. Why end the show with Joe dying? Why not end on a happy note showing the family moving forward in a different direction. Writers what a disappointment!
I cried the moment I even heard the episode synopsis! Why kill joe? Why ruin a show people have invested their time and emotions in? It was just unnecessary and horrible.
Because life isn’t always happy,,, because people die Young. Some of the best finale’s are great because they are maudlin.
Ending was horrible…I thought it would of been awesome that she had found him and saved him and he didn’t really die and THAT THERE WERE MORE EPIDSODES AND MORE SERIES CAUSE THIS SHOW IS SO AWESOME…I CANT GET ENOUGH OF IT..THOROUGHLY SAD.
Bring them back to life.
I loved the show but only now saw the last episode, and I wasn’t thrilled with the finale, but I am confused at so many posts that didn’t understand it. Let me spell it out for you: the writers killed off Joe, so they could show that he waited for Alison, and they can “kiss forever,” in whatever space dead people go to. I am amazed that people saw it as negative – chill – they are together…forever. And the crime story never happened, he sent her that dream to offer her hope, and it backfired, which is why he… Read more »
Just finished binge watching this show for the last couple of weeks. I thought the final episode was likely the best I’ve ever seen! I do wish there were many more seasons however – I’m going to miss this series a lot!
I just finished binge-watching “Medium” on Netflix. I have never seen the series before. I loved the show for many reasons, but I think the primary reason is because I fell in love with the characters and their relationships. I especially loved the DuBois family. They were realistic and down to earth. Joe and Allison’s love for each other was believable and they remained faithful to each other the whole series. The message of the importance of family was a message that is not shown enough on television. The final episode necessarily brought the season to a hasty close. The… Read more »
It broke my heart too i cried too i just finished watching the series on netflix too however im glad i wasnt just left hanging im sad that joe died and all but glad that he was there when she died i can only hope that when i die my love will be waiting for me too
I can’t believe I missed this show when it was on network TV but I love it. I’ve been binge watching too. I “ve really seen some great series I missed on network TV and binge watching is the way to go.
I watched this series up until around season 6 when it first aired on aussie tv. I really enjoyed the show but missed the final season and a half, I just finished re watching the whole series. My biggest fault with the final two episodes would be that it seems strange that Alison would not be able to foresee that herself and Joe may be facing danger. It goes against the whole series, it’s not believable that she did not see what was coming and would not try to stop it.
But if you remeber correctly she didnt always see things about people that she was close too
Not necessarily. The show always had the premise that it was more difficult for Allison to predict for people closer to her or even herself. Joe’s dad confirms that in the last few episodes of season 7, when Joe’s mom was dying of brain cancer.
I just think Joe’s mom is a horrible ***** for not telling Allison it was going to happen. She left her with this cryptic message “there are dark days ahead” but didn’t explain further and just disappeared.
Thanks, I should have read ahead.
I thought the same, although I cannot recall if she foresaw dangers to her family before. Still I found it to be an imaginative ending, one that I did not see coming.
Admit it guys and girls she always chatting **** and it always about her not her hubby or kids her
Have to agree – I kept telling myself, I could have stayed married to her as long as he did. She was fairly selfish throughout.
