Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

The show ended very creatively. However, I can’t imagine her boss getting killed. Not sure why that needed to happen.
I liked and disliked the last medium,we just watched the whole series on Hulu and we finally got through it all and I watch it all back when it was on the time and I don’t remember the last one at all I know now that they had to come up with something but I still think it could have been better than it was, but I loved the show then I will probably watch the whole thing again sometime later!!
Just finished watching the series via ITunes. Bad. Poorly done ending. Joe did not have to die. Also, how come Alison died and was young again and dressed nicely? In the show everyone that died looked exactly as they did when they died! Bad writing! Rushed episode and a very sad and poor way to end such a great series. I feel let down, sad and annoyed. No true ending for any of the other characters… chopped to say the least. BAD!
Who would want to see 70 year old Allison with 40 something Joe? That’s why. And I enjoyed the last scene a lot more that way.
The series finale ruined the entire series. It was all for nuttin killing joe. Anyways it made no sense for in the eppy 20 season 6 titled time keeps on slipping ariel skipped 7 yrs ahead in her life and joe was quite alive. No continuity
The producers, writers completely insulted fans with the whole, ‘Joe died, wait, he’s alive, no, he actually did die’ thing!
Of course, Medium is one of the few series’ that “It was just a dream sequence” would be believable, accepted. The whole finale could just as easily have been a bad dream…that all fans shared.
Just saw the finale in syndication, and STILL made me cry.
No reason for Joe to die; and then moving ahead was disappointing. There’s so much we missed. I’ve been watching reruns and I’d love to see the series revived with Patricia Arquette!
Me too!! I didn’t get into it during the original run, but caught it on reruns, and have been HOOKED!
Upset with the finale because it ended the series!
I would DEFINATELY watch every episode if it were to be revived!
I love and am obsessed with this show and am SO upset that it’s gone!! Why?
I really loved the series, until the last episode. Killing Joe was a terrible way to end this great show. Shame on your writers.
I thought medium was a very good program until the finale. I could have written a better script and I’m not a script writer. It was amateurish and let the whole series down.
Well start tv shows the reruns of medium and this week the series finale will air again. Guess who wont be watchin it. They screwed the whole show by killing joe. One of the worst series finales i have ever seen.
Gee I told the cult that it better not b true..lmao..xxo
The writers on medium should b ashamed at how they ended this series. Bad writing bad episode. Now had you had it all be a dream would have made more sense but you effed it up and made it a very bad episode. Never have i seen such a bad poorly written finale.
They can bring it back and the Joe dying was a dream within a dream. Loved the Joe and Allison match it would have been nice had she been a little less selfish and paid more attention to the man who loved her.
The last episode was done tastefully. I had not seen it all these years. It can be ressurected several different ways. I hope to see Medium again one day on TV as it was a superior show. The group of writers surpassed themselves with EACH episode. The Debois’ made a loving couple/family. I would definitely love Jake Weber as a husband. What a man!. No other show has even come close to the Medium. Patricia was superb! …….. the best! 04/10/2019
Yes!!! Joe was a mighty fine man! Cue Salt ‘N’ Pepa song.
Well, it was bad, but Seinfeld was bad too.
I too very much disliked the finale of Seinfeld the first time I saw it. A year later I saw it again and thought is was perfect. Brilliant, even! I doubt I will feel that way about Medium.
I agree i hate they ended this show. Very sad. They had some awesome eppes this was not one of them.
Why do so many last episodes of loved series have to seem like a big f’you to the fans? Horrible episode that just brought down the whole series really. The real Joe Dubois whom the character was based off didn’t die like this. So why?
