ABC had high hopes for Off the Map, their new medical drama from veteran producers of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned and ABC has now cancelled Off the Map after one season on the air.
Off the Map follows the lives of six doctors who have “lost their way” and have traveled to a remote South American jungle to try to rediscover why they wanted to become physicians.
The TV series’ cast includes Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
The TV series premiered to a disappointing 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers. The show won its timeslot but was disrupted in some parts of the country by coverage of the Tucson Memorial. As a result, ABC reran the premiere Off the Map the following night.
For whatever reason, subsequent episodes of Off the Map essentially drew fewer and fewer viewers each week. The final episode of the season hit a series low and attracted a very poor 1.3 rating in the demo with only 3.80 million viewers.
Despite having some very passionate fans, Off the Map ended up being one of the lowest dramas on ABC. It’s no surprise then that the network has now decided against ordering a second season, cancelling the show. All 13 episodes have aired and we likely won’t find out what became of the young doctors left in the jungle.
What do you think? Are you sorry there won’t be a second season of Off the Map? Why do you think Off the Map didn’t catch on? Is it better than the other medical dramas?

I, too, am very disappointed. I was never able to watch this show “live” but loved watching it online. Did ABC think about online fans? The actors were far better (to me) than Grey’s, and the story lines fresher. Not so much smugness either. I’m thinking about not watching any shows live, just downloading them to watch after the season once I know the series isn’t being cancelled. I’m tired of investing in a new group of characters and their story only to be cut off before denouement!
OTM is a brilliant show! I watched it every week and will miss in tremendously!
“ABC has lost this viewer forever.” This is not directed at you, but to many people: I can understand your anger, but I see people saying this with every cancelled show. The fact is that the vast majority of shows get cancelled, and if everyone actually followed through with not watching the network, no one would be watching TV. It is just not realistic to say you are going to stop watching a network. Besides, it makes no difference whether you watch or not, since you aren’t counted towards the ratings. If you are going to be a TV fan,… Read more »
“Off the Map” was the 3rd series on TV (“Grey’s Anatomy” & “Private Practice”) featuring a gang of gorgeous doctors who could not keep themselves out of inappropriate sexual liasons and who could not adhere to certain aspects of a code of ethics if they had a barrel of superglue! This one hit an all time low when one brilliant your doctor fell in love with a cocaine farmer and in the end tried to help him save his crop or something like that. How did it make it thru a whole season?
I am very upset to learn this has not made it, I had a feeling it would not but really had my fingers crossed. I live in Kaaawa, Oahu and a lot of the scenes were filmed just up the road from where I live so I had become especially attached to the show. Its very upsetting to not know how the excellent open plot lines would of been resolved but I salute the producers for going out with optimism and putting up a fight for a second season. Will be sorely missed.
Programmers are idiots. The characters take more than one season to really develop. OTM was fresh and interesting , It had some good new talent and a solid developing story line. Definitely idiots!
Ouch! I love that show…Bring it back!!
I can’t believe they cancelled this. It is a great show that is different from much of what else was on and I liked to watch it. never missed it and sad that I wont get to see what happens to the people. ABC keeps a lot of garbage on yet they couldnt give this show a 2nd season to get its footing? I hate it that jerks who probably dont even watch much TV get to decide whats good TV.
How is this different from Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice other than the doctors being younger and practicing out in the jungle?
The show SUCKED
ABC has lost this viewer forever. As I choose my words very carefully, we all have choices in which networks we watch and because I fell so hard for “Off the Map”, I will not be tuning in any longer to ABC. Only once in a great while does a show like this come along and over 5,000 viewers signed the petition so I know I am not alone. We thank the wonderful writers, producers and of course the talented actors of OTM because they gave us time to escape to Hawaii even for an hour. I realize the networks… Read more »
I am very upset that they cancelled Off the Map. I think that they should’ve given it a second chance. They did not do any marketing for this show. I maybe saw 1 promo a week for OTM whereas I saw hundreds of promos for Body of Proof. They didn’t give it a good enough chance. And now we won’t know what happens to Mateo and Ryan and all the others. It is very dissapointing, I just had hoped that they would give it another chance. SO SAD!
What a bummer!!!!!!!! I thought the show was getting better and better as the characters developed. Was so looking forward to next season. Hope one of the cable networks with pick it up. Come TNT, USA…keep it going.
I can’t believe the show has been canceled. My husband and I really liked this show. We were looking forward to find out what happens with Mateo, the female doctor, and the wife. Come one you need to make another season.
It’s a shame that tv is still relying on the Nielson ratings system, with all the new ways of watching our favorite programs. It boggles my mind that the Nielson system can determine how many people are watching what with hundreds of channels to choose from. It’s not the same as when the three networks dominated television. I for one loved Off the Map and watched every episode On Demand on the weekends. I am done with ABC except for General Hospital, after that’s cancelled, which I’m sure it will be, ABC will be OFF MY TV!
Damnit! This show is a huge hit in my house (7 girls) and with my boyfriend (who’s a medic)! It’s way better than Greys and Private Practice – two show, which according to my house full of Greys and PP devotees, are getting duller by the episode (HELLO, Greys just did a Glee episode and can the medicine – if any – be any more boring?). ABC did not do a good job with time slotting this show. Good business practice would’ve moved Greys (which has fans already who are gonna watch it) and put Off the Map in its… Read more »
Well, there you go! “The people were way better looking…” Grey’s Anatomy cast is GREYING. This mathematically equals that they’re “not as good.” All of these doctor playing posses of kids are ridiculous. Wouldn’t it scare you to death to think of being treated by medicine men and women like this? Cute or not!
