It’s no secret that Pan Am has been struggling in the ratings. As a result, ABC decided to order only one episode beyond their initial 13 installment order.
Pan Am is currently one of ABC’s lowest-rated shows and currently averages a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.76 million total viewers. That’s the same as now-cancelled Work It. The most recent episodes have been garnering a 1.2 in the demo, ensuring that the season average will keep dropping.
ABC maintains that the show has not been cancelled and Christina Ricci, the actress who plays Maggie the flight attendant, maintains that a decision won’t be made until May.
In a recent press call, she said, “I don’t really understand the ratings system and how that works or, I choose not to… If I go shopping, the people who work in the stores love the show. When I fly, all the flight attendants love the show. I know friends and family love the show. Most of them didn’t watch it during its time slot. Most of them watched it online or TiVo’d.”
Ricci doesn’t understand why Pan Am’s numbers aren’t better, but said, “I just feel like more and more people towards the end of the season are getting really into it and really saying that every show is better than the last. And that’s good, because you really want a show to have time for development and develop into something really amazing.”
There was hope that the 14th episode would be used to give the ongoing storylines some closure but Ricci says that’s not the case, “If there isn’t a season two, there will be questions that will never, ever, ever be answered.” She concluded, “But, hopefully we will get a season two and no one will know that until May.”
What do you think? Do you think Pan Am producers should have planned to end the show with episode 14 or, leave things unresolved in hopes of a second season?

What is wrong with the executives at ABC, don’t they see a winner on the horizon? Forget the ratings, they always start low and build as the popularity of a show builds. To stop this series in the middle of the road is as dumb as not putting out the episode of who shot JR. If the ABC execs let this one get away then the sponsors need to find another network because these guys want to only put out losing television. Hey ABC guys, don’t make the same mistake someone else made with a show called “The Playboy Club”.
I love Pan Am and i not only watch it as it airs but i record on the DVR to watch it again later….All the Women are Beautiful, the story line is GREAT if ABC would air it every week on time i think the ratings will go up….JUST AIR THE SHOW EVERY WEEK and don’t skip weeks in between. This show have has a huge fan base and we all love it at work and we talk about it for days but we can’t understand why ABC is trying to cancel it when it is their fault for not airing the… Read more »
Was really sad to even think this show may be cancelled…we record the show and watch it later does that make a difference on the ratings…we watch the show every week…please don”t cancel the show!!
My wife and I love pan am, everyone we talk to loves it.. Were baffled about the ratings as well.. I will say this- the lapse in it not always being scheduled, or on a couple week hiatus for filming etc really hurts the ratings because people don’t know if its on or not sometimes, especially after a 3 or 4 week layoff.. Its a great show and I think people will be disappointed if it is cancelled. Were like old folks and fall asleep so early so we always watch it on on demand, And I’m assuming they don’t… Read more »
I really, really LOVE the show! I think it is great. I watch it on hulu after it airs as well. It is my FAVORITE new show this season BY FAR!
I look forward to every sunday when i get to watch this amazing show! It is classy, historic, and full of talent. To see this show canceled would be ashamed. I wish I could help the ratings, but I do not have cable and have to download it….If they check the amount of tivo records and downloads Im sure they could see more viewers interested in the show. PLEASE DONT CANCEL PAN AM
Dont cancel Pan Am…I am one of those that DVRs it so I dont count in the ratings …but I never miss an episode!!!
It takes time to get into new shows and sometimes one gets hesitant to invest in new shows since they get cancelled so fast. Also networks need to realize that today audiences tibo shows alot since there is such a large variety of choices in tvland. I tibo a lot of shows and watch them when it is convient for me. Yes I love Pan Am and want to see a second season. Let adventure continue.
Hi, Could I just say that I love the show, but I do not understand what they have done the last episode romance languages, is it meant to be chapter 7? its not in line with the events that have happened on chapter 12, ….. however 1964 is.
What happened?
Paula.
My husband and I stay up every Sunday to watch pan am because we don’t want to wait till Monday to see the recording on our dvr. It’t one of the few shows on tv with well developed characters and a unique story line. I have a friend whose mother was a pan am stewardess from Paris and her father a pilot from the us…they love the show as do I and many of my friends. Please give this show another year to build the fan base that it deserves.
Awww me and my husband are hooked onto this show. We watch it every Sunday and are in our 30s. We will truly be disappointed if it ges cancelled. Everyone we know loves it!! Pls don’t cancel it! It’s so rare to find a refreshing show like pan am.
I love the show!
I LOVE this show. I don’t watch tv usually but on pins and needles waiting for Sunday to come so my husband and I can watch the next episode. PLEASE do not cancel this show. Keep it going. It is the best show around!! I have been so dissappointed that the show has not been on or episodes have been far and between.
We love Pan Am, both my husband & I never miss a show….love it! But, we do tvo it & watch it later, please don’t cancel it
Pan Am is a great show, and despite other opinions, a different show than Mad Men. The show displays an era that has been forgotten with overbooked flights, rude attendants, and automated check-in. The show makes you want to fly and every airline should invest for advertising during the time frame. The plot lines and character development took a few episodes to come through, but there are 6 characters in the main ensemble, and descent plot lines and character development should be a character an episode to really get to know them. It is nice to be entertained by actual… Read more »
