canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Resurrection: Should ABC Have Cancelled the Series?

by Trevor Kimball, November 9, 2014

Resurrection TV show on ABC: cancelled soon?Late in the 2013-14 season, NBC and ABC launched three new Sunday night dramas — all with single word titles. NBC cancelled Crisis and Believe while ABC renewed Resurrection for a second season. In retrospect, was that a good decision for the alphabet network? Should Resurrection have been cancelled as well?

On Resurrection, a small town in Missouri is turned upside down when long-dead loved ones return after 30 years. The cast includes Omar Epps, Frances Fisher, Matt Craven, Devin Kelley, Mark Hildreth, Samaire Armstrong, Sam Hazeldine, Landon Gimenez, and Kurtwood Smith.

Debuting on March 9th, Resurrection had a great launch with a 3.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 13.9 million total viewers. (Those numbers are about the same as this season’s How to Get Away with Murder’s debut.)

Unfortunately, Resurrection’s ratings dropped about 19% in week two and they kept falling nearly every week of the eight episode season. The seventh installment hit a low of a 1.9 rating with 7.85 million — half of the premiere’s demo rating.

Should ABC cancel Resurrection?

Considering the poor luck that the alphabet network had last year launching new dramas, it wasn’t much of a surprise that ABC renewed Resurrection. They didn’t have much choice. However, the ratings slide was a terrible sign for the future.

Now, the show has been really struggling in season two. After a positive second season debut, the ratings quickly dropped, falling to new series lows week after week. The October 26th installment registered a mere 1.2 rating with 4.36 million.

ABC recently ordered full seasons and additional episodes of many of their new and older shows. It was a telling sign that the network is only producing 14 episodes of Resurrection this season.

Unless the ratings improve, it looks very likely that Resurrection will be cancelled by May. Hopefully, the writers will give viewers some degree of closure before the end.

What do you think? Did you stop watching Resurrection? Should it have been a mini-series? Is competition from The Walking Dead and football the cause of the low ratings? Do you think Resurrection should be cancelled or renewed for a third season?

I sure hope Resurrection is NOT cancelled! It is a great show so it will probably get the ax. I watch very few new shows for this very reason. The networks cancel them.

I love this show please do not take it off. It’s different from other shows. Why they take the ood stuff off is a mystery in itself. Yeah, 18-49 whoopee! The rest of us are watching too.

This is an interesting sci fi show for ABC. I like the premise and the characters. Why does ABC always want to pull the plug on shows so early? I hope they reconsider their decision.

Resurrection is able to continue with the twists that keep it interesting and build tension – when you relief tension why watch then – the Mentalist should have continued with Red John. Also, yes football is more difficult to compete with, but I tape Resurrection and watch it in the kitchen whilst making dinner and watch Family Guy Sunday night. That’s my deal and thoughts

Apples and oranges! What is the criteria of ratings or how are they determined? As a viewer, I am going to answer based on what I like to watch. But as a network decision, they are probably looking at numbers on a spreadsheet. Are they loosing money? Do they have something better? I will say that one thing is for sure, a million viewers is better than none. And viewers get familiar with a show and like the characters, so when they make a change, they will loose an entire audience and are then hoping for a new one… change… Read more »

I love this show. I’ve watched this show since the beginning. Maybe the reason so many shows have such low ratings is because many people cannot afford DVR devices and can’t watch these shows when they come on. These networks need to account for this. I have a DVR box and I record all my shows because I can’t watch them live.

Believe shouldn’t have been cancelled and neither should resurrection. I like the weird stuff. It is so frustrating to get into a show and then have it cancelled before it can finish a season. So many other truly bad shows stay on the air and the good ones get taken off before they are given a chance. It is hard to compete with football but people can dvr more than one show now. I watch the walking dead and resurrection and revenge thanks to dvr. If they are going to cancel the show, the least they can do is end… Read more »

PERFECTLY stated! Thank you. Hey, if any network decision-makers are reading these comments, please pay close attention to Michell and stop leaving all of us hanging after we invest ourselves in the only good shows you put on the air.

Resurrection: Should ABC Have Cancelled It?

Why? So they can put another lame “reality” show on TV? I guess TV executives have no clue at all about most people’s opinion on reality shows. There are far too many, they require little, if any, acting ability, little, if any forethought and they’re all starting to run together.

If I had to guess, I’d say they’re spinning the story about this show not doing well (the same way A&E did regarding Those Who Kill) because the writers don’t know how to proceed with the story line. Claiming poor ratings is just a cop-out.
