Saving Hope: NBC Picks Up TV Series for Summer 2012 [Video]

by Trevor Kimball, March 1, 2012

Saving Hope TV showNBC has picked up Saving Hope, a Canadian one-hour hospital drama that stars Erica Durance and Michael Shanks. CTV ordered 13 episodes, including the pilot. Principal photography is scheduled to begin on March 12th and the show will run on both NBC and CTV.

The new Saving Hope series is being produced by Ilana C Franks Films with Entertainment One in association with CTV and NBC.

Here’s the press release from CTV as well as a sneak peak:

NBC to Become U.S. Broadcaster for New CTV Drama Series “Saving Hope”
– Series is from award-winning producers Ilana Frank and David Wellington –

– Principal photography set to begin March 12 in Toronto –

– Series set for summer debut on CTV and NBC –

Erica Durance stars as Dr. Alex Reid in SAVING HOPE

Los Angeles/Toronto, ON (March 1, 2012) – Leading independent studio Entertainment One (eOne) and Canada’s #1 television network CTV are proud to jointly announce that NBC has come on board as the U. S. broadcaster of Ilana C Frank Films’ new one-hour original drama series, SAVING HOPE. In November, CTV announced it had ordered 12 one-hour episodes of the series, joining a pilot shot last summer. Premiering this summer on CTV and NBC, principal photography is set to begin March 12 in Toronto.

In addition to acting as the deficit financier, eOne will also handle the international television distribution of the series in all media including all television, DVD/Blu-ray, VOD and digital exploitation.

“With NBC now on board, this is another huge success for Bell Media’s independent production team and demonstrates yet again our commitment to producing high-calibre, engaging and compelling original programming,” said Phil King, President, CTV Programming & Sports. “This captivating new series is sure to resonate with Canadian viewers as well as viewers south of the border.”

Starring Erica Durance (SMALLVILLE), Michael Shanks (STARGATE ATLANTIS), Daniel Gillies, (THE VAMPIRE DIARIES), Huse Madhavji (COMBAT HOSPITAL, STAR! DAILY), Julia Taylor-Ross (ROOKIE BLUE), and Kristopher Turner (ROOKIE BLUE, THE LISTENER), the series is from acclaimed Gemini award-winning producers Ilana Frank and David Wellington (THE ELEVENTH HOUR, WOULD BE KINGS, ROOKIE BLUE).

In SAVING HOPE, when charismatic Chief of Surgery Charlie Harris (Shanks) at Toronto’s Hope-Zion Hospital ends up in a coma, he leaves the hospital in chaos – and his fiancée and fellow surgeon, Alex Reid (Durance), in a state of shock. Along with newly-arrived star surgeon, Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES), Alex races to save Harris’ life. As the action unfolds, comatose Dr. Harris explores the hospital halls in “spirit” form, not sure if he’s a ghost or a figment of his own imagination. Reid, along with her fellow doctors, press on to save his life and those of their other patients, as they deal with the complicated and courageous decisions that are made in their daily struggle to keep hope alive.

SAVING HOPE is produced by Ilana C Frank Films (“ICFF”) with Entertainment One, in association with CTV and NBC. The series is executive produced by Ilana Frank and David Wellington for ICFF, John Morayniss (THE FIRM, HAVEN) for Entertainment One and Lesley Harrison. Executive Producers and Showrunners are Morwyn Brebner (ROOKIE BLUE) and Aaron Martin (BEING ERICA). The series was created by Malcolm MacRury (CRASH AND BURN, REPUBLIC OF DOYLE) and Morwyn Brebner. David Wellington directed the pilot. For Bell Media, Trish Williams is Director, Drama, Independent Production; Corrie Coe is Senior Vice-President, Independent Production; Mike Cosentino is Senior Vice-President, Programming, CTV Networks. Phil King is President, CTV Programming & Sports.

loved to show. Hopes it returns. The camera men need to fix their blips. Lots of light where it shouldn’t be very distracting. Loved the storyline and the ending leaves you wondering what will happen next

I am so tired of the reality crap and don’t like watching people make idiots of themselves on the game shows. The big three networks are losing their audience to ONS and netflix. This may be a better option. My favorites are in another channel. Person of Interest,NCIS,AND CSI. We need another show like Lost. I hate losing GCB.

The advertising of the first episode caught my curiosity, once I watched it, I’m hooked. I’m tired of all those so called reallity shows. Finally a good drama. I look forward to future episodes to see what’s going to happen. I like the storylines and Micheal Shanks.

This show looks AWESOME! It just depends on which weekday and timeslot to place it during the summer. I will watch it especially for actor Daniel Gillies…he is so smokin’ hot and sexy! The first few minutes of the preview clip above makes me glued in to watch!

Looks good. Wonder if it will be a generic hospital show, or will it portray the workings of an American hospital. Or will it be the style of Canada. I would love for Americans to see what it is like in Canada and various other counties where socialized medicine is the norm. No worries about huge hospital bills. Yea, I really hope the show happens and that there is enuf notice so I can start to watch from the beginning. Too bad they have to use a title so close to other shows. It gets confusing after awhile. I am… Read more »

Is the day and time to see this in the US already set up so we can know when to catch this series. I’m a big Stargate fan and would like to see Michael Shanks on the screen again.

I was excited to see this until I realized it might be like Grey’s Anatomy — that would be terrible! Still, it’s got sufficient sci-fi actor creds for me to check it out. Definitely better than repeats or reality TV.

Once again Shank’s character is ascended so he can mostly only watch. I wonder if this show will be more Grey’s Anatomy or more House. I really hope more House. I really dislike hospital soap operas.
