When Stargate SG-1 ended its run in March 2007, fans of the franchise could take solace that they’d still have weekly Stargate adventures courtesy of spin-off Stargate Atlantis. Now, Atlantis is being cancelled as well.
Stargate Atlantis debuted on July 16, 2004 on Sci Fi. The series follows the adventures of a human expedition to the lost city of Atlantis in the Pegasus Galaxy. While Atlantis generally hasn’t been as popular as the SG-1 series, it still has a lot of fans. After five seasons on the air, Sci Fi Channel has announced that the series is ending.
The cancellation didn’t come as a complete surprise to the producers. On his blog, showrunner Joseph Mallozzi cites rising production costs and the decline of the US dollar as contributors. He and showrunner Paul Mullie broke the news to the cast and crew themselves. Thankfully it seems like the adventure isn’t over quite yet.
The second half of season five will air as expected on Sci Fi beginning in January. The 100th episode, titled “Enemy At the Gate,” will be the show’s last. The Atlantis story will then continue in a two-hour movie. The as-yet-untitled movie will run on Sci Fi and soonafter be released on DVD.
Mallozzi and Mullie will write the movie script. It’s not yet known who will direct the project. Mallozzi writes, “Obviously, I can’t say much about it at this point but suffice it to say that it should include the entire cast in addition to a certain gaunt and pallid flowing-locked guest star.” A release date should be forthcoming soon.
Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, the SG-1 and Atlantis co-creators, are upbeat about the news. In a statement, they said, “We’re excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original Stargate DTV movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise.”

“We share in the producers’ enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format,” said Thomas Vitale, Sci Fi’s Senior Vice President of Programming & Original Movies.
The network has indicated that “the show will live on as a network franchise.” What the statement actually means is unclear. Sci Fi may be planning additional Atlantis movies, or it could be a general indication that the Stargate franchise will continue, likely as a third series.
In late 2007, Cooper and Wright pitched Stargate Universe to the channel. Earlier this year, Wright told Gateworld, “The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago — one that they never saw to fruition, but that we can.” He went on to say that the ship’s mission would be to help seed the galaxies with Stargates. Universe hasn’t been given a greenlight yet but, now that Atlantis has been cancelled, Sci Fi may have the funds to do it.
Though the Atlantis cancellation is surely a disappointment to fans, Mallozzi is confident the story isn’t over. He writes, “And, if [the Atlantis movie] proves anywhere as successful as the first two SG-1 direct-to-video features, you can be assured that this will be the first in a long, long line of Stargate Atlantis movies.” Stay tuned!

SG Atlantis is the best show in the SG series. Wish someday the sixth season will be continue.
I just don’t get it,why start with a new serie when the old one isn’t finished.I have watched universe for 5 minutes and I can say I hate it..bleuhhhh…
we wanna know how they could have left there and let the others die because of the wraith.who is taking care of them now…?????????????????????????/we need answers..
The new series will not necessarily carry a “new” theme! In fact it is supposed to be a continuation of what previously happened. Indeed it should carry an explanation of many things and unless linked to the former events, it will be a new show, which we are convinced we would not want to see – something like SG Universe. So no worries! Let them come up with season six first, then we can all enjoy!
What else can be said, people unite to TRY and make you guys understand that they want season 6 but,you still don’t want to hear, they will pay through the nose for it,what is REALLY behind your stubbornness, not money at this point,it is a done deal,WE will pay for season 6,what’s the catch!!!!!! You still will make your 1 or2 movies and, still, that will sell. Are you stupid or what!!!!!!
Is anyone here, either from the forum or the fan zone, able to gather as much comments as possible and have them sent direcctly to the SG Atlantis authorities? Perhaps this will shake their ice-cold hearts and make them at least think about what they do to all fans… or maybe let them know how they empty their pocket with SG Universe!?
I hate SGU
Please make season 6. I love SGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn don’t just **** it up by canceling the show make a season six. Even if it will be with the ending episode,ya know the one that says “The End”.
Whose whit me for a season SIX(6)-say “I” 🙂 🙂 🙂
Yes! Season six is what we all want. If you get the fans disappointed, then you get Stargate Universe never successful and never voted for. I want to see SEASON SIX… and I am sure it will come in the near future.

I really can not believe that the SG-A series canceled
I watch the series from the beginning, I think the most improved so far.
I started watching the series SG-U. Flop of the series……….
Greetings……..
Stargate Atlantis is unique and excellent show.
I like it much more than the SG-1 series.
The combination of actors is absolutely awesome – they all preform beyond the crowed expectation.
Each season is thought from start to end which makes the story lines and their connection to the season relevant and interesting – there is a build up tension in each season and a rising feeling when you see the last chapter.
To sum it up – SG-Atlantis dictated new standards to sci-fi series and it should not be cancelled!
please oh so pretty please make season 6….please ,it’s such a good show,I love it.
watched SG-1 with a lot of pleasure…so make Atlantis also complete to season 10..
a huge fan from the Netherlands…
Stargate Atlantis , Star trec and Space 1999 is the greatest serial movies for tv.

I think a TV series so beautiful and so exciting for the fans had never conceived in the past producers of fiction science fiction for television. Stargate Atlantis, from my point of view, is a masterpiece, especially for special effects, art film for television. There are earlier. For these reasons and many others (audience, for example), must continue with the sixth season and with the film, with the same characters: Sheppard, Teyla, Ronon Mckey, Woosley, Samantha Carter ……. The production must not only save it, must continue and give up everything else. Atlantis is the real success of Stargate! The… Read more »
