Tell Me You Love Me: HBO Cancels Racy Drama, No Season Two

by Trevor Kimball, July 29, 2008

IMAGEEight months after HBO picked up Tell Me You Love Me for a second year, the TV series hasn’t returned. Now, apparently, it never will. What happened?

The sexually-explicit drama debuted on September 9, 2007 and revolves around three couples, each with their own set of intimacy problems. They seek help from Dr. May Foster (Jane Alexander), an analyst with relationship issues of her own. The series’ ensemble cast includes Michelle Borth, Tim DeKay, Luke Kirby, Adam Scott, David Selby, Katharine Towne, Sonya Walger, and Ally Walker. The tenth episode aired on November 10, 2007.

The ratings for the show’s first season weren’t great but HBO renewed Tell Me for another season after just four episodes had aired. Despite the renewal, the show didn’t return to production. Now, it appears that the reason for the stall was that creator/executive producer Cynthia Mort couldn’t figure out what should come next.

In a written statement, she said, “Given the considerable amount of time that has passed and despite the best efforts of everyone involved, we were unable to find the direction of the show for the second season. There are so many other stories to tell and many other ways to tell them. I look forward to doing that with HBO in the future.”

The cancellation decision was apparently a mutual decision. HBO has a development deal with Mort and intends to continue working with her. Michael Lombardo, HBO’s West Coast president, said, “We really feel Cynthia has an important voice that belongs on HBO and we look forward to the next show she will create for us.” Stay tuned! I, like everyone else, am extremely disappointed that this show isn’t coming on for another season. My husband & I both were looking forward to see what was coming up next; so much that we were constantly talking about it. Tell Me You Love Me was the only show that we really could enjoy together, while relating to the issues. It was interesting that with episode, we were able to identify with some of the characters (or situations) & then we’d have a discussion about everything, etc. Needless to say, I am terribly sad. I don’t know if I can… Read more »

I am so disappointed! I was so looking forward to the next season and think it’s sort of ridiculous that no direction for the show could be found. I think there were many possibilities.

I can’t believe it!! I have waited, and waited to see more of the characters from this series. I can’t believe that The Carnivale, Rome, and Curb your enthusiasm can stay on but not tell me you love me. I truly enjoyed the show. I loved that it gave true insight on what goes on behind the closed doors of couples. I agree, the writer could have come up with something…. i can think of a million ways to take the story.

I am very disappointed to hear the show wont be returning. It really was a breath of fresh air to see that other ppl could relate to similar issues and that you are not the only one having those problems. I am pretty sure the makers could have brought more to the table rather than just giving up. (Probably due to internal politics)

Great show and it will be missed.

No new stories to tell??? Did she grow up in a bubble? I can’t believe it!

It was the show that said what couples were thinking, but never dared to say! Except for In Treatment, there’s no other show out there like this…I’ll really miss it and the totally believable characters. It was more REAL than the reality shows!

Soooo dissapointed. I could relate to this so in many ways. I waited and waited for the first season and just now found out about the cancellation. Maybe Cynthia Mort will surprise us all and come out with Season Two. I still have my fingers crossed.

im soooooo upset and dissapointed that tell me you love me isnt returning. for the first time in a very LONG time i felt this was a real and truthful show that showcased emotions ANYONE could relate to. I know MANY many people who watched every week with anticipation to see what would come next. From the Psychologist’s relationship to the young couple’s relationship you could relate to each of these dynamic characters. i am very saddened that this show will not return. its very dissapointing.

I’m sorry but I think Season 1 should have tied up all loose ends and then in Season 2, bring in new characters like an African-American couple, a gay couple (2 males), etc…spice it up a bit because it’s HBO. Put Tell Me You Love Me on Showtime and it might be a hit on the right night and timeslot.

I am so disappointed in Cynthia Mort. Tell Me was a great show! And she left Season One with loose ends. You want to talk about Sex? How about turning the audience and fans on and the leaving us frustrated and unable to climax?? At least produce a few episodes to tie loose ends. Other wise, Mort has just been a **** tease to viewers. I loved that show!
