canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

The Assets: ABC Cancels Spy Drama — Again

by Trevor Kimball, July 1, 2014

The Assets TV show on ABC canceledMaybe fans of The Assets will get to see all eight episodes of the ABC series some day. The network cancelled and pulled the limited TV show after just two low-rated episodes back in January. Then, last month, the network decided to burn off the remaining episodes on Saturday nights.

Two new installments have aired on but the ratings have been dismal, even by Saturday night standards. Now, the network has pulled The Assets off the schedule once again. They’re replacing the remaining episodes with reruns of Mistresses.

Hopefully, ABC will just release the remaining episodes online so the show’s small audience can finally see the rest of them.

Hee are the press notes:

I cannot believe ABC is doing this. It will be very difficult to ever start watching anything on ABC again, for fear of them pulling the rug out from under me again. People actually had to think a little to understand The Assets and that is a huge no-no for networks.

Shame on you ABC!

Why does ABC even bother? Just stick this show on their website and be done with it. Or just air them in the early morning hours and let people DVR them. Not everyone has broadband Internet. I just settled down to watch the 7/5 episode only to see some show I never heard of. I really love ‘The Assets’. Ancient History maybe but I never made of study of the Ames scandal so its fresh to me. ABC actually gave ‘Zero Hour’ more of a chance than this show, and ZH was truly crappy.

Well, I have the first four episodes saved on the dvr and was waiting to get all eight before watching any of them. Hope my dvr doesn’t die of old age before I get them all. Sure glad I didn’t start watching any of it yet; otherwise I would really be upset.

The prior comments say everything I could about how dissatisfied with ABC. Can’t even show the last 4 episodes of a mini-series that I, like many, really enjoyed. ABC sucks

I thought this network “FINALLY” had developed at least some semblance of taste and depth. The Assets well depicts this intriguing part of our history, yet ABC replaced it with a trite waste of most viewers’ time and interest. I’m disgusted.

ABC needs to be canceled. This is ludicrous. The Assets was one of the few really interesting shows on abc. There are viewers who enjoy intelligent, thought provoking content that is based on historical events and people. What a shame that the network panders to the ones that love the likes of ” The Mistresses” , really? Is this all that you can come up with? I guess I’ll be tuning in elsewhere or better yet, read a good book.

What a way to run a business. Jerk your customers around over and over again.
I will never watch an ABC show again when it airs and if it manages to last for years I will just watch it on line. I suggest others do the same. Screw me once shame on you, twice and there will not be a third. Idiots!!!!!!!!!

We love cold war history. Had our DVR set to record the first run of the episodes in January and couldn’t figure out why we didn’t have them recorded after the second one! When I saw one episode record a second time in June, we were extremely excited and once again reset our DVR only to have but 2 episodes record again. Somehow we searched and searched and found the first 4 episodes. Decided to find out what happened to the show or if the last 4 episodes were available elsewhere, so I looked online. Since we only had seen… Read more »

CENSORSHIP: Is this the real reason why ABC is cancelling the series again? Was this “too touchy” for the CIA? Or, is this just the case of a network pandering to a lower common denominator of viewer? If they don’t want to run the rest of the series on the network, at least post them on their website and sell them on a pay-per-view basis.

Wow. This is a new low for even the networks. The networks gods ought to read the predictions that TV is dead. When you continue screw with your public, what do you expect. I can imagine the turmoil these idiots must have experienced when they brought 45 minutes of soccer without a commercial. Well thanks for the soccer now crawl back n your holes and continue to give the public your drivel. I hope ABC is the first to go!

I’m disappointed as well. I watched in January and like the show…was glad it was on again and now this!!!! Was looking forward to the next installment all day…had to get on line to find out its been cancelled once again. Come on ABC make the remaining episodes available somehow to those of us who were watching. I watch ABC almost exclusively but I am rethinking this choice right now.

The story of Assets is very important for the United States people to know about what happened in that time of our history. The show is done very well, and hasn’t performed due to poor publicity on ABC’s part. I am hoping that they will properly publicize this mini-series and show it again. At least show the 4 final episodes.

I really like the series and rarely watch ABC. You got a viewer with me and my family with The Assets and now I’m just disappointed in you. Finish what you start. You already have the series finished. I don’t think I can really trust you and will seriously consider not watching any series you put on tv anymore. At least put it online. This is ridiculous! The Assets has strong, smart women in it. I wouldn’t let my daughters watch Mistresses!

I fell into this show “accidentally,” and like BBC/PBS dramas that begin slowly & crescendo thru the season, “The Assets” has become more interesting as it progresses. It is appalling BUT NOT UNEXPECTED that the usual mediocre, mindless network triumvirate (ABC, NBC, CBS) cancels a show that the viewer has to think about for more than 10 seconds. Shame on you, ABC, for leaving us out in the cold – and wow! “Mistresses” – reruns as replacements for “The Assets.” BTW – “Mistresses” is an attempt to duplicate the BBC series, “Mistresses” – without any of the BBC depth but… Read more »

ABC, get real. Advertise The Assets properly, let viewers know when episodes will be on. It’s a decent mini series, worth airing, but you acted as if you were ashamed of it. No wonder people didn’t watch, Saturday night is a black hole and those of us who liked The Assets found it by luck. Give the show a modicum of publicity. Is the problem that the actors are mostly Brits whom you think we’ve never heard of. You are so wrong. If you want to wash your hands of the show, put it online, put it on cable, release… Read more »
