Tonight marks the end of The Astronaut Wives Club TV show on ABC — at least for now. The network has yet to officially cancel or renew the series for a second season. How’s the show done in the ratings? Should it come back or did tonight’s finale properly end the series?
Based on the book by Lily Koppel, The Astronaut Wives Club focuses on seven women who were key players behind some of the biggest events in American history. As America’s astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, the lives of their young wives were transformed — seemingly overnight — from military spouses to American royalty. The cast includes Yvonne Strahovski, Dominique McElligott, Odette Annable, Joanna García, Erin Cummings, Azure Parsons, Zoe Boyle, Bret Harrison, Aaron McCusker, Wilson Bethel, Kenneth Mitchell, and Desmond Harrington.
The show debuted in mid-June to a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.51 million viewers. That was a mediocre start. The demo was pretty low but total viewership wasn’t bad for a summer series.
Unfortunately, both the demo and general viewership took a big tumble in week two — and the numbers fell much lower as the season progressed. Last week’s installment matched a series low in the demo (a 0.6 rating) and hit a new low in viewership with 3.2 million.
Looking at the network’s summer ratings, Astronaut Wives Club has been performing about the same as their other scripted fare — The Whispers, Mistresses, and Rookie Blue. None of them have been doing very well but the network needs some scripted shows to air during the summer months.
Based on the ratings, it seems like ABC should cancel Astronaut Wives Club and let the story end with tonight’s finale. However, they certainly could decide that it’s worth give a second round next summer.
But, what do you think? Do you like The Astronaut Wives Club TV show on ABC? If you ran the network, would you cancel it or renew it for a second season? Was tonight’s finale a satisfying conclusion to the series?
I think this show is fantastic! It connects you to history and keeps it alive and shows you how times have changed. How we have grown. I think it deserves a second season!
Loved this show!! If I missed it when it aired I would get up early the next morning and watch it on my computer via Hulu.
Sure hoping for a 2nd season!!
i love the show ! It’s refreshing to watch real history on TV . I love the fact that it’s true. I never knew what really went on with the Space program. I also loved the cast of the show. I say pls give it another try!!!
I loved the show. I enjoyed the clothes and the time. I felt part of it because I knew the history & it was like getting to know them.
Loved the show! Would love to see more.
Love this show!!
Please return the show!! It held me in awe and opened my eyes to what the astronauts and the wives sacrificed for the American Future! It was beautifully done! And It made me rekindle my pride in being a patriotic American!! Theyre the best Cast Writers A Fantastic Ensemble!!
Love this show! It shares real stories and real footage! Anybody who likes history would love this show. My sisters and I are in our twenties and love this show!!! Please another season! There are so many shows on cheating, criminal stuff, but this show is real and shows real life stories.
I am disappointed by the shows short run. I was enchanted by the nostalgia. My mom passed away a few years ago but I was remembering her elegance and grace, by the cast’s clothing, furniture, parties, foods and Christmas tree! People cared about their neighbors and we had pride in AMERICA. Remember Patriotism? The National Anthem played and people stood tall. This show reminded me of those times that formed my opinions of the world around me. I remember campaigning for John Glenn in the seventies. A more innocent time, things were simple and yet complex. My eyes were being… Read more »
Please renew! Loved the show! I grew up in that era and loved the history! Also all the behind the scenes of the public eye! Great show!
As a boomer, I was interested in the show. The acting was poor to middling. Aside from reminding me of the clothes we wore (what we thinking??), mixed with a bit of nostalgia about the space race, it was not a show with any punch. Considering the topic, that isn’t a good report card.
Spoiler Alert – the Americans land on the moon before the Soviets. One small step for American mankind.
I LOVE this show. One of my all time favorites. Love the history and depth of the characters. Well done!!
I love this show & would love to see it renewed. It’s refreshing to watch something with real social & historical substance , instead of the myriad of mind-numbing reality shows that keep being cloned or recreated. With shows like Bridzilla, Housewives, Honey Boo Boo & a host of other shows featuring ill-mannered individuals hoping for their 15 minutes of fame taking over the airways, isn’t it time to bring back a show demonstrating a time of civility in the midst of civil unrest? A show with real actors & real content. I can see it going further…just because the… Read more »
I agree
I couldn’t agree more! The Astronaut Wives Club is my new Lifetime’s cancelled show Army Wives. Yes, this series was based from a wonderful book that was based on real life people and events. Why cannot they take from this and make a fictional story and keep The Astronaut Wives Club going?
The way they ended it, it wouldn’t make sense to bring it back. They’ve already said what happens later in their lives.
Love the show !!! Great history and tje acting was point! I never was interested in NASA and all the history of the space race. This show made me read and become educated about this very special time in Americas history !
