Tonight marks the end of The Astronaut Wives Club TV show on ABC — at least for now. The network has yet to officially cancel or renew the series for a second season. How’s the show done in the ratings? Should it come back or did tonight’s finale properly end the series?
Based on the book by Lily Koppel, The Astronaut Wives Club focuses on seven women who were key players behind some of the biggest events in American history. As America’s astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, the lives of their young wives were transformed — seemingly overnight — from military spouses to American royalty. The cast includes Yvonne Strahovski, Dominique McElligott, Odette Annable, Joanna García, Erin Cummings, Azure Parsons, Zoe Boyle, Bret Harrison, Aaron McCusker, Wilson Bethel, Kenneth Mitchell, and Desmond Harrington.
The show debuted in mid-June to a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.51 million viewers. That was a mediocre start. The demo was pretty low but total viewership wasn’t bad for a summer series.
Unfortunately, both the demo and general viewership took a big tumble in week two — and the numbers fell much lower as the season progressed. Last week’s installment matched a series low in the demo (a 0.6 rating) and hit a new low in viewership with 3.2 million.
Looking at the network’s summer ratings, Astronaut Wives Club has been performing about the same as their other scripted fare — The Whispers, Mistresses, and Rookie Blue. None of them have been doing very well but the network needs some scripted shows to air during the summer months.
Based on the ratings, it seems like ABC should cancel Astronaut Wives Club and let the story end with tonight’s finale. However, they certainly could decide that it’s worth give a second round next summer.

This show has truly touched my heart and makes me want to continue pursuing my dreams. Please give this show an another chance for next season. There are always new ways to pull up the ratings. This show has huge potential, and it is not ready to be ended.

I absolutely LOVED The Astronauts Wives Club!!!!! My new favorite!!!! I definitely think it should come back for a second season!! I would be a most faithful viewer and huge fan! I loved it so much, in fact, I am now reading the book!
Loved this show. Good to watch something other than reality TV , which I am so .done with. Lots of boomers watching tv so why not give us shows we can enjoy. We are the ones paying the cable bills ,the younger generation just streams from the Internet. Shows like this are a refreshing change from reality ,cop shows,and hospital shows.
I enjoyed the Astronauts Wives but I think they ended it on a high note and finished out everyone’s story lines. If they brought it back what would the storyline be?

I am a boomer and loved this show. I work late, so had to watch ‘on demand’ or DVR this to see it. I felt home again. I lost my husband of 48 years last yr and this was such a wonderful time to spend remembering the clothes we wore, the hairdo’s and the social etiquette of that period. I believe shows like this bring the generation gap closer together. All my sisters around my age all agree, it is one of the best shows this summer. So many good (and bad) TV series are summer fill-ins. If this show’s ratings suffered, it was because of the lack of viewers during the summer months. This was a fabulous series. I kept telling my co-workers about it and they said they wanted to watch but had plans for the summer that kept them running. That they hoped to watch it on Demand. I was not impressed with Pan Am. I loved the show and was sorry to see it end. And the fashion! For me I was a child when the space race started and this brought back many childhood memories. I remember watching the moon landing on our black and white portable TV. It was a different time and it is important for future generations know a simpler time actually existed. Another season and this could possibly turn into a Mad Men type cult
I absolutely loved this show. That said, I don’t think think trying to follow it could ever do it justice. I would like to see it stand alone with a repeat showing down the road. It is definitely worth a second time around.
I love this show. I am happy they wrapped up loose ends just in case it doesn’t get renewed, but it definitely should. I love the history behind the show. All of the cast were amazing. Wish it would have been longer then 10 episodes.

I love this show…true historic and entertainment value…strong male and female characters, which is unusual these days!
Loved the show! The history of the space program was great to see and witness once again. The personal lives of the astronauts was something new to me. What courageous women these astronaut’s wives were!!!
