Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
I love this show. Never even heard of it till we found it on Netflix. Something the whole family could watch. I wish some other network would pick it up I know I would watch evey episode. I would tell everyone of my friends and family to watch. I don’t think this show was ever promoted! Thank you Netflix! I would love to see this return, I think the Rock would be a good fit for The ends of the earth.
I think that many of these great shows that get canceled is because the rating system is archaic. They do not take into consideration the amount of people who tape the series and watch later and the fact that there is less of a viewing audience watching regular TV than there used to be due to the many options due to streaming. I seldom watch regular daily TV, but tape shows and watch them when I have the time. It’s frustration to see shows like the Glades, The Finder and Life canceled when so much other garbage iLife reality shows… Read more »
Acutally rates are produced by people who tape the shows, and from hulu and some popular streaming sites. Now not all streaming sites get counted but they do take into account taping and what not.
I’ve been enjoying The Finder on Netflix. Not sure why it didn’t take off, maybe lack of good advertising by the network?? I would have definitely watched a second season.
Never heard of it till I found it on Netflix. It ended up being a pretty good show. Much better than some of that reality garbage.
I loved the show and was very disappointed when I found there was no season 2.
Not enough advertising. Just found it on Netflix. Love the show but I’m left hanging! !!
I never saw it on TV. Just since it’s been on Netflix. I enjoyed the series. Enjoyed the cast. Some of the story lines were a little out of my enjoyment level, but only a couple out of one season. I would have kept watching it for another season or two.
Loved the finder on. Netflix I can’t understand why it was cancelled it’s a good show. I don’t think it was promoted enough on tv I never heard of it. I say best show I have seen in a long time.
I found the finders on Netflix it was an assume show. I can’t believe it was cancelled after one season!
Hell no the finder is a great show it needs to be back
I love this show I watched it all in a day !! I was hoping for another season ugh sad
I loved this show! I watched it with my family when it first came out and we all enjoyed it. When I found out there was going to be no season two I was very disappointed. And now watching the episodes again makes me miss it even more I hope one day we can get another season
Netflix should DEFINITELY pick up The Finder. Remember… Star Trek never blew away the ratings, and look at the franchise it built! All these people making comments are articulate and comprise the core of a good strong demographic!
We loved this show.. Never knew it was on TV. Bring it back Netflix make a new season for all of us who loved the characters.
I loved this show! So funny and unique in its humor. Walter had me cracking up all the time. He has something special that made him perfect for this part. In episode 8, Life After Death, the one about the dead rapper (50 Cents is in it), I couldn’t stop laughing at how he was trying to dance to hip-hop at the very beginning and then later in the episode he tried to rap a nursery rhyme when he was trying to solve the case. OMG you have to watch it. It’s terrible there was only one season, and then… Read more »
Sell the show to another tv channel. Fox f””ng sucks, almost every good show that they show they cancel. I do not understand why people sell manuscript to them.
The show is a spin off of another show meaning that Bones would also have to be sold. Also The finder will never come back unless they do a whole reboot with a new cast people you gotta remember that Micheal Clark Duncan is dead therefore cant do the show anymore. It wouldn’t have mattered that it only got 1 season it never would have gotten a second one.
Many shows have had major characters switch actors between seasons. They could cast Bob Sapp or someone else of comparable size and countenance
