Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
Good shows like this should be picked up by Netflix to continue the series. One thing people like me hate commercials and don’t always remember a time slot to watch on a certain day. Netflix allows you to watch a show when you want..whatever day you want and NO commercials.
Unfortunately one of the main actors died awhile back… 🙁
I just found this show on Netflix and am extremely disappointed it was cancelled. Please bring it back, with the same writers. The casting is great! MCD was so good and sadly will be missed. This show offered a little of everything…like the older tv classics which left something to the imagination. It told a story without resorting to being gritty, dirty, bloody, vulgar, etc. We need more quality television.
Unfortunately one of the main actors died 🙁
I think it was sice Bones was in that the viewers while Bones was on Hiatus started watching a show they maybe werent being able watch before on a different channel. I just found this show on netflix had never heard of til i saw an episode where he found Bones’ school medal. They should pick it on netflix as a netflix show or sething like that.
I absolutely love the the “Finder.” I really don’t understand how “Bones” has continued…..and the “Finder” had been cancelled. It’s an absolute shame such a wonderful show hasn’t been picked up. It’s one of my all-time favorites!! Can’t it be made for streaming? Loved the characters, the chemistry, the story lines.
I too just finished the first season after finding it on netflix. Never even heard of it when it aired originally. Would love to see how they continued it. Liked all the characters (except maybe the gypsy Uncle).
I love love this show! The acting and the chemistry between the characters is fabulous. I didn’t like it on Bones but have watched it on Netflix more than once. Please bring it back. I don’t know why it did so poorly in ratings because on the web it gets excellent approval.
It was the music in the end. Not a strong soundtrack. Also, how the girl cop didnt seem to like him very much. Not cool.
I Loved the show and watch it on Netfilix. Even if there are no more episodes I would like to know more I would love to get the continuing story scripts. I miss the show and I know that Micheal has passed but I would love to know where the show was going. How can I find out more?
I saw the Bones episode, and maybe one episode of The Finder, back in 2012. Then I lost track of the show, until this week. Watched the full 13 episodes on Netflix. It’s got a few minor flaws, but overall, a GREAT SHOW! I would like to see them bring it back, since they left EVERYTHING unfinished….Keep all the characters and actors, and maybe find a fitting replacement for Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP)…..
The pilot episode was not very good. You felt out of place and confused while watching it. While it does give you an understanding of the way Walter’s( the main character, Geoffrey Stults) mind works, it leaves the viewer feeling separated and confused from the show. This may have been the reason why many stopped watching. It does get better as the series continues but by then the damage was done and nobody cared.
I know I felt this way at first but I continued watching it and it didn’t disappoint after fourth to fifth episode.
I thought the pilot was great! With just a few minor exceptions, the writing and production values, plot twists, and character development was spot on. it’s a quirky, unique show that is hard to find on commercial TV. All the performers are wonderful, and the guest stars too! Netflix, PLEASE pick this up and run with it!!!! We need a Season 2,then 3,4,5,6,……
Remembered the Finder from Bones. Was very much worth watching as it had minimal violence, sex and language. Just a fun story with complicated people. Beginning to wonder what they’re smoking at Fox. 🙁
This show is AMAZING!! Please finish season 2, I will donate if i have too!
I just finished Episode 13! Please – we want a Season 2
Oh my gosh – today I finished episode 13. Please – where is season 2???
We lucked onto “The Finder” on Netflix and after liking episode 1 grew to love the characters, admire the intrigue, respect the humanity, and enjoy the humor as we watched the next number of episodes. It was hard not to watch them all straight through at one sitting but schedules don’t allow that much TV. The actors and writers did a wonderful job creating a suspenseful and unpredictable show (unlike many other mystery attempts). Now researching for the possibility of other seasons coming up available, evidently there are no more. It’s a shame that we can only get this quality… Read more »
