canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

The Gates: Star Frank Grillo Hears TV Show’s Cancelled

by Trevor Kimball, October 10, 2010

The GatesWhile a second season on ABC seems like a real long shot, ABC hasn’t officially cancelled The Gates (unlike say, My Generation). One of the show’s stars however has been told that there won’t be a second season.

The Gates follows a Chicago police detective (Frank Grillo) who moves his family to a gated suburban community to become the neighborhood’s security chief. They soon discover that their new neighbors aren’t as normal as they appear to be. The large cast includes Andrea Powell, Rhona Mitra, Marisol Nichols, Luke Mably, Travis Caldwell, Skyler Samuels, Chandra West, Colton Haynes, Janina Gavankar, Justin Miles, Victoria Gabrielle Platt, James Preston, Georgia Cole, Johnny Messner, Brett Cullen, Shannon Lucio, Devyn A. Tyler, McKaley Miller, and Louis Herthum.

Ratings expectations are lower in the summer months but the suburban supernatural series averaged only a 0.9 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and just 2.95 million total viewers. Though the ABC show has a devoted audience, there really just aren’t enough of them for a network series.

After weeks without news of The Gates’ status, Grillo recently tweeted, “I’m told from a friend at ABC that The Gates are closing. No season 2 Still unofficial but that’s the latest.”

After a big negative fan response, Haynes tweeted him, writing, “That caused an uproar haha. It is still not decided if #thegates is coming back or not. There is no official news as of now. Soon”

Grillo wrote back, “wow. Certainly did. Just passed on what we got yesterday. As I said. ‘Unofficial’ but as I see ABC’s ratings tank who knows.”

In any cast, it looks like two of the show’s executive producers have already moved on. Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo (who also co-created the series) have been hired by ABC, along with Greg Poirier, to develop a new summer series for the network. It looks like it’ll be a drama that revolves around a female spy.

What do you think? Is The Gates cancelled or will the series miraculously return for season two? If not, would you like to see the story continue in another form — books, comics, or something else?

ABC always seems to disappoint (see Pushing Daisies). Pushing Daisies shouldn’t have been canceled, it should have been more frequently advertised. Happy Town and The Deep End were only given three episodes before cancellation. Considering that the ratings on The Gates and Happy Town were basically the same, I’m surprised that ABC aired season one to its completion. I’ll be downright shocked if it gets picked up for a second, considering ABC’s previous track record.ABC needs to be more concerned with the quality of their shows than being so money hungry, they turn away millions of people with every show… Read more »

as usual, anything new & different gets cancelled–i am still mourning fast forward–a super show with an excellent ensemble cast–the gates was not as good as fast forward but miles ahead of any of the moronic insulting so called reality shows or inane situation comedies (with the exception of modern family!)–it appears just about every unusual show with a good cast that i get hooked on gets cancelled–i agree with some of the others–evidently anything remotely unusual or somewhat sci-fi in nature needs to be on sci fi network to succeed–i have seen several on sci-fi that are not nearly… Read more »

the gates is one of the best shows on tv why are they canceling this show.. cancel all the reality tv … this is so entertaining ! THIS is why people get rid of their tvs and go to videos.. the networks are not giving us the shows we like .. they are more interested in their own needs… the fans don’t matter. fine. one more TV out the window!

I have nothing to add other than my disappointment. I agree with everything that’s been said. I’m *still* sitting on the last hour of The Gates. I don’t know if I want to watch it or not.

I’am not happy about abc cancelling” The Gates”. Its a really great show that got better and better each week.In fact I couldn’t wait to see what season 2 had in store for everyone. I’am so tired of shows getting cancelled that I’am afraid to watch any new ones.

I think Sci Fi or one of the cable nets should save The Gates. It would work much better on cable, just as previous shows such as Invasion and Eastwick could have survived there.

WTF! It doesn’t surprise me at all that ABC will cancel the Gates (GTs). I was also skeptical of the premise the GTs when the “Summer Show” premiered, however, the writing improved, the characters developed and the story lines evolved. When the season finale occurred I was more than pleasantly surprised. ABC, like it’s colleagues NBC, CBS and Fox; will continue to short-change promising new series, while retaining the TV detritus (pluperfect GARBAGE) reality shows!!!

Here we go again, another show cancelled without closurer! The viewers are very leery to watch any show for fear of cancellation. The really SUCKS! No pun intended!
I’m with you Offhumor, I wanted to see just where the Charlie story line was going to go! A zombie in the mixed amoungst the vamps and were’s, now that was a new twist!

I am so frustrated that ABC keeps cancelling really good shows! I agree with many other people out there that ABC is not giving new shows a chance to really kick off and just throwing them to the way side after only a few episodes. Talk about having no confidence. The shows ABC does keep on the air are stupid, boring ones too. It does not make any sense.

ABC thinks of itself as a family oriented network. My family finds no reason to watch any shows on their lineup because they choke us with boring fare and rip away promising programs due to ratings that haven’t built up fast enough. Patience is indeed a virtue, but it’s all about the money here.

The show has potential but it is just lacking something. I can’t put my finger on what it is. I am really not surprised that it may get cancelled.

I’m ticked off! Why should I watch any new shows anymore? They just end up getting cancelled. It seems anything Sci-Fi doesn’t last on network. Let me guess, The Event will be cancelled next? (Insert angry face emoticon here).

I see ABC has once again let down fans. It’s no wonder networks are consistently behind in ratings. They never give any show a chance. I thought The Gates would be cheesy but gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised. You’ll never get anyone to invest in a new show if the networks themselves have no faith in it. NBC and CBS gave The Big Bang Theory and Chuck a lot of time to take off and now look at them. Not to mention this was a summer show…. you can’t expect stellar ratings. Sigh… I was so looking… Read more »
