The Secret Life of the American Teenager was cancelled by ABC Family two years ago, but there are still loyal fans that were left unsatisfied with the ending of the series. The finale was left open-ended with Amy moving to New York.
After the cast reunited for a wedding recently, the reunion generated new interest in the series and its ending. Fans wanted to know what would happened to the characters if the series continued to air. MTV asked the creator of the series, Brenda Hampton, that question, and she gave a very detailed answer.
She revealed that Amy did move to New York, and she stayed in New York. However, she did not stay alone in New York City. After a couple of years, her entire family, including her son and his father moved to New York City to be with her.
“The cross-country travel while taking on college was just too stressful for Amy, but no one wanted to see her abandon her dreams so everyone came to her. That’s right, Grandpa George, Ricky and John all in an apartment in Brooklyn Heights, all so Amy could be with John more often while getting her degree. But they were a safe distance away over the Brooklyn Bridge, and she remained in the dorm for a few years.”
After college, Amy started a career in documentary films and Ricky went for the business side of things, and he worked to open a fast food chain.
As fans can see, Brenda Hampton, knew exactly where she wanted to take Amy and the rest of her family on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She had it all planned out, but the series was cancelled after season five. There was not a sixth season.
MTV also asked if it was possible to bring back the series, and Hampton made it clear that was not possible. She did take a moment to thank the loyal fans that did watch the series while it aired.
“Because this is the reality of producing a long-running series, it’s very difficult to keep all the actors together over the years. Hey, it’s difficult to keep fans as well! So I want to thank all the fans who watched us for five seasons and for still caring what happens to Ricky and Amy and everyone in “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” family.”

i like watching this show on what happened to Amy in college , did she hooked up with ben or did became friends , did ricky and john missed Amy and followed her to new york and fix their relationship so they be together and finally married after finishing college , and rest of cast lives went of nice to know what happened? i read article what creator say what happened at end the show ? i love what happened from creator of the secret life of america teenager !
that season 5 ending was a mess. they need to close this series in a good way. I wish they could make more seasons with a definitive ending this time = amy and ricky are MARRIED. the way they closed season 5 is like they tell us amy is going back to…..BEN.
jesus…..branda fix this atrocious ending…bring back the cast and ricky and amy together again forever.

I really love this show and now after reading the producer plan of how she wanted season 6 if there was one omg it breath taking I really who she brings back this show it really hit some key points in teens everyday life please come back please

I love this show I love the characters and the story’s I’m sad it ended after 5 season with so many question. Watching this definitely shows how situation are in real life it’s not all rainbows and unicorns and sometimes you dont end up with the person you think you should be with because it just not the right time for them. This show I’m totally addicted to I hate that it ended I love Ricky Amy and Ben and little John I feel like they all handled this child hood stuff good I don’t know what I could of done in her situation I give Ricky props for changing his whole life just for his son and Amy I give Amy props for dealing with life as it through her into mother hood way to early and I give Ben props for trying to step up and be a father to John even tho that was not his son I feel… Read more »
