Court will soon be adjourned for ABC’s new legal drama. The Whole Truth has been cancelled.
Airing on Wednesday nights, The Whole Truth stars TV veterans Rob Morrow and Maura Tierney. He plays a powerful defense attorney who was raised on the wrong side of the tracks. Tierney is on the opposite side as a Senior Trial Assistant District Attorney whose father was a sheriff. Viewers are shown how each side builds their case, using their own version of “the truth.” The rest of the cast includes Eamonn Walker, Sean Wing, Anthony Ruivivar, and Christine Adams.
For whatever reason, most viewers haven’t been willing to even give the series a try. The legal drama got off to a very poor start right out of the gate. Whole Truth debuted on September 22th to a poor 1. 5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.85 million viewers. The news got even worse in week two and the rating dropped by 20%. The last two episodes seem to have evened off, registering a 1.3 rating and about 4.4 million total viewers.
The Whole Truth’s been ABC’s lowest rated show, attracting an even lower rating than My Generation; another freshman drama that was pulled after just two episodes. Likely because of the caliber of the show’s cast and because it’s being co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer’s company, ABC has been more patient with it. That doesn’t mean however that they’re going to order any more episodes. ABC has now cancelled The Whole Truth.
Via Twitter, co-executive producer KristieAnne Reed confirmed that the cast and crew will complete the initial 13 episode order but that will be the end. At this point, it’s unclear how many of those will actually air.
Whole Truth remains on the schedule this week but will be preempted next week for the In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: All Access Nashville interview special. On November 10th, ABC airs the Country Music Awards. Whole Truth is tentatively scheduled to return after that but those plans could certainly change.
Though Whole Truth has been cancelled, there is some positive news for fans of the show. With the news of the cancellation coming this far in advance, producers have time to give the series some closure. The cast and crew are still shooting and are scheduled to continue until mid-December.
What do you think? Should The Whole Truth have been cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

Hasn’t anyone noticed a pattern? All shows that make you think invaribly fail. The average American doesn’t want to think and they’ve gone so long without thinking that they’ve lost the ability… if they ever had it in the first place.
TV sucks because the average American viewer DEMANDS TV that sucks. Either learn to stop thinking or read books. TV isn’t going to get any brighter… no matter how much you mess with the brightness control.
I really loved the show. It’s a different approach/setting compared to most crime fighting shows! I hope ABC will see it’s potential as one of the most promising tv shows! You see both sides of the law and how the law sometimes can be interpreted and misinterpreted in order to prove your case! It’s a waste to put it to an end!
I loved the show because sometimes the defense won and sometime the D.A. won– you never knew. Also, the cast was great especially Maura Tierney– tough but not obnoxious as other females seemed to be depicted on other Tv shows. Also, it was opposite one of the CSI shows (which I think are completely ridiculous– CSI people don’t do 1% of what is shown). Give it another time slot and see what happens.
Oh NO!!! I just found this show on Hulu ~ thanks to the heads up from my daughter who ran across it early on. I just watched all 5 episodes and really enjoy it. I am VERY disappointed to see that it has now been cancelled. It is a fun, interesting show due to the fact that you get to see behind the scenes of both sides and your opinion tends to change at times. I hope that another network picks it up….or that THIS network perhaps gives it another chance.
I want this show back on I loved how it is a tad different than your other law shows but funny to BRING IT BACK
It was too intelligent for most Americans!
My husband and I are VERY disappointed! We think it’s one of the best new shows and feel very sad for the cast – 2 of our favorites. I wish more people would have given it a chance.
Sorry to hear this! I thought it was great show. I really enjoyed the back and forth between the defender and the prosecutor….really liked the way you never knew which side would win in the end and after the verdict you got “The Whole Truth.” I don’t think it got enough exposure.
I’m so disappointed that ABC is canceling The Whole Truth. It really was the most interesting new show this year. Much better than The Defenders, which was its main competition. They should have put it in a different slot before quitting. It was well-acted and well-written, with a nice way of looking at both sides of a court case. Bad move, ABC!!
I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS SHOW IS OFF!!! How typical? I love this show! I just now decided to research why my show, The Whole Truth, wasn’t coming on. My mother and I were saying, before finding out about this disappointing news, that ‘ABC must want to lose thier viewers’. So we find out about the cancellation and we are dissatisfied! I second that, some network should be able to pick this show up. I’ll get cable just to follow the show!
i loved it……………
This was one of the actually original dramas on TV this year and was well cast and acted.
very disappointed. my husband and I thought it was one of the best new shows, as good as Detroit -187. Certainly as good or not better than TheDefenders.
i loved it; sorry to learn it has been cancelled.
Huge fan of crime dramas and drama shows alike. This is a hugh blow to me just as i start to watch a show and absolutely fall in love with it its pulled off of the air. This is a grave disappointment. Rob Morrow is one of my favorite actors all the way back to Numbers totally killed me when that show got plugged yet again another show string rob morrow is pulled from the air. Does no one see the level of talent he truly has as for the rest of the cast in the whole truth i truly… Read more »
I liked the show. I thought it was different because you never knew which side would win. It was not predictable.
