Court will soon be adjourned for ABC’s new legal drama. The Whole Truth has been cancelled.
Airing on Wednesday nights, The Whole Truth stars TV veterans Rob Morrow and Maura Tierney. He plays a powerful defense attorney who was raised on the wrong side of the tracks. Tierney is on the opposite side as a Senior Trial Assistant District Attorney whose father was a sheriff. Viewers are shown how each side builds their case, using their own version of “the truth.” The rest of the cast includes Eamonn Walker, Sean Wing, Anthony Ruivivar, and Christine Adams.
For whatever reason, most viewers haven’t been willing to even give the series a try. The legal drama got off to a very poor start right out of the gate. Whole Truth debuted on September 22th to a poor 1. 5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.85 million viewers. The news got even worse in week two and the rating dropped by 20%. The last two episodes seem to have evened off, registering a 1.3 rating and about 4.4 million total viewers.
The Whole Truth’s been ABC’s lowest rated show, attracting an even lower rating than My Generation; another freshman drama that was pulled after just two episodes. Likely because of the caliber of the show’s cast and because it’s being co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer’s company, ABC has been more patient with it. That doesn’t mean however that they’re going to order any more episodes. ABC has now cancelled The Whole Truth.
Via Twitter, co-executive producer KristieAnne Reed confirmed that the cast and crew will complete the initial 13 episode order but that will be the end. At this point, it’s unclear how many of those will actually air.
Whole Truth remains on the schedule this week but will be preempted next week for the In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: All Access Nashville interview special. On November 10th, ABC airs the Country Music Awards. Whole Truth is tentatively scheduled to return after that but those plans could certainly change.
Though Whole Truth has been cancelled, there is some positive news for fans of the show. With the news of the cancellation coming this far in advance, producers have time to give the series some closure. The cast and crew are still shooting and are scheduled to continue until mid-December.
What do you think? Should The Whole Truth have been cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

This is a good show….maybe thats why it didnt make it…idots would rather watch some reality show that requires NO thinking.
I very much liked the show. I thought the premise was unique and intriguing: to present both prosecution and defense as equally tenable, and to let us know, in the final few minutes, where the truth lay. The cast was excellent and Rob Morrow as a breezy, smart, tuned-in lawyer and Maura Tierney as a serious-minded, but human, lawyer was well done. I’m with Milva–give it more time!
I loved this show as well. They chemsitry between Morrow and Tieney made them perfect sparrring partners in a legal drama that was entertaining and engaging. Never knowing who was going to win kept the interest going. The acting was first rate. Too bad they caneled this show and left on The Defenders bc it has a commercial appeal. Not that I don’t like Belsuhi and OConnell but the Whold Truth was just a better drama. BRING IT BACK!!!!!!!!!
If ABC would air this on Fridays @9 or 10 pm, this would be a huge hit much like Miami Vice was. They put it up against 2 huge shows on Weds and expect it to do well. Try Friday before you toss it away. This show was so well written and acted. A huge step away from the drivel you see on TV now days.
Great concept, great execution. Unfortunately, it is, or was, opposite two other lawyer shows, the pretty good The Defenders and the dreadful Law & Order Los Angeles, which is an unworthy successor to the original. I thought its first episode was unbearable and will not try it again.
My husband and I really love this show. It is one of the best shows to hit tv in a long time. I really think it was a bad call for ABC. Should have moved it to a new time or day. I am pretty sure there are more people who watch it that are not being counted.!!!!!!! What a shame, seems like everytime we find a new show we like they take it off.
I enjoyed the show, though I thought the fact that they always went against each other every week was far fetched. It is a shame as I have been a fan of Rob Morrow since Northern Exposure.
I’ll admit, the first episode I decided I was not that pleased. I liked Rob Morrow’s character and decided to give it a second shot…then I got hooked…and now it’s gone! This sucks.
I can’t believe they cancelled The Whole Truth…. the show was great and was really starting to take off. I have watched every episode that was aired and it was the show that made me think for hours after it ended. The cast was great and needed more time to capture and audience. BAD move ABC.. there are way worse shows on the network.. Bett with you is one of the most boring shows I have seen. If Detroit 187 gets cancelled next, I’m done watching ABC all together.
I totally agree
I love the show. i get goose bumps at the end when you find out the “Whole Truth” at the end. Unfortunately it’s on at a bad time or day. it is against NBC’s L&O: LA and CBS’s new show Defenders with Jim Belushi & Jerry O’Connell. Love Maura Tierney & Rob Morrow & the rest of the cast. I’ve told everyone I love this show & to watch it. You can catch up on Hulu.com
I liked this show better than some of the other crime dramas, especially at the end when they reveal the person who actually did the crime after the jury reached a verdict. Sometimes the jury was right and sometimes the jury could be wrong. It makes you think. The cast has to act and there are no gory scenes like in CSI. Hope it continues.
I really liked this show from the very first one and I’m very disappointed that they are cancelling it already. Its a very fresh twist on the legal drama, and not knowing if they are guilty or not till the end is the best! And I love Maura Tierney! She’s great!
I loved this show!!! I enjoyed the mystery plot without all the blood, guts and rapes that are showed on CSI or Law and Order…..
Too bad these shows dont make it….people want blood and guts and especially rapes.
This show has all KINDS of potential. Great characters, with depth and sizzle. Intelligent plots and scripts. The trouble (for me) has been that it seems every time I want to watch it, it gets preempted by something (example: Chilean miners — great for the Chileans, a screwup for the show’s momentum). I kept losing track of when the heck it was on and trying to figure out whether there were continuing themes/back stories.
This is a great smart show. Unfortunately, shows that require thinking are not resonating with the public. I look forward to watching every week.I don’t understand why people prefer some of the junk that is currently on tv. I hope this show would be moved to tnt or usa.
