You’re the Worst: Season Three Renewal for FXX Comedy

by Trevor Kimball, December 2, 2015

You're the Worst TV show on FXX: season 3The second season of You’re the Worst airs next week but that won’t be the end of Gretchen and Jimmy. FXX has renewed the dark comedy series for a third season for Summer 2016.

Here are the details:

BREAK OUT THE TRASH JUICE! “YOU’RE THE WORST” RETURNS FOR SEASON 3 ON FXX

Executive Producer/Creator Stephen Falk Reaches Multi-Year Overall Deal to Develop and Produce Projects for FX Networks and FX Productions

Critically-Acclaimed Comedy Due Back in Summer 2016

LOS ANGELES, December 2, 2015 – FXX has ordered a third season of the critically-acclaimed comedy You’re the Worst from Creator and Executive Producer Stephen Falk, who has reached an overall deal to develop and produce projects for FX Networks and FX Productions, it was announced today by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions.

The third season of You’re the Worst will air on FXX in summer 2016. The multi-year overall deal will enable Falk to write, develop and produce television projects for FX Networks and FX Productions.

“Stephen is one of the best new talents in comedy – as funny, thoughtful and original as You’re the Worst and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next,” said Grad. “You’re the Worst, already one of the most critically-acclaimed comedies on television, is also one of the most innovative, something Stephen and the cast will continue in the much-deserved third season. The daring turn this season, led by the honest and respectful portrayal of Gretchen’s depression, was a very courageous move for a comedy and another milestone for You’re the Worst.”

You’re the Worst is a modern look at love and happiness told through the eyes of two people who haven’t been very successful with either. It’s the story of Gretchen and Jimmy, fear, heartbreak, romance, sex, food, Los Angeles, Sunday Funday, friendship, and the fact that sometimes the worst people make the best partners. The series currently airs Wednesdays at 10:30pm ET/PT on FXX.

You’re the Worst returns with an all-new episode tonight, “Other Things You Could Be Doing” (Airs December 2, 2015, 10:30 pm e/p on FXX) – Frustrated with Gretchen, Jimmy makes a tough choice. Lindsay comes to a decision about Paul. Edgar has his improv graduation show. Written by Stephen Falk; directed by Matt Shakman. The season finale (“The Heart is a Dumb-Dumb”) airs next Wednesday, December 9 at 10:30 pm e/p on FXX.

An original comedy from writer and executive producer Stephen Falk, You’re the Worst puts a dark twist on the romantic comedy genre. Narcissistic, brash, and self-destructive Jimmy Shive-Overly (Chris Geere) has inadvertently found himself paired up with cynical, people-pleasing, and stubborn Gretchen Cutler (Aya Cash). After a whirlwind courtship that culminates in Gretchen burning her apartment down with a faulty “back massager,” she and Jimmy are forced to take their relationship to the next level by moving in together (which neither of them are particularly thrilled about). Now they must learn how to live with each other when they can barely live with themselves.

Rounding out the cast are Desmin Borges, who plays Edgar Quintero, Jimmy’s once homeless, war veteran roommate who’s on a mission to redefine his relationship with Jimmy; and Kether Donohue as Lindsay Jillian, Gretchen’s best friend and former partner in crime who’s now struggling to find her identity after being dumped by her “lame, soft” husband.

You’re the Worst is produced by FX Productions.

The second season of You’re the Worst has garnered widespread critical praise, continuing a tradition it began in its breakout debut season:

“Stellarason… .the tragicomic balance You’re the Worst strikes better than any other show currently on air… You’re the Worst is terrifyingly real… It’s the kind of thoughtful, unexpected deviation other romantic sitcoms should learn from.” – David Sims, The Atlantic (11/4/15)

“Sparkling… . the performances are so rich” – Emily Nussbaum, The New Yorker Magazine (09/15/15)

“FXX’s You’re the Worst has gone from little-known comedy gem to one of the most talked about and critically acclaimed series thanks, in part, to a stellar second season that has deftly delved into the subject of clinical depression without losing its comedic edge” – Natalie Abrams, EW.com (11/17/15)

“One of TV’s best shows” – Todd VanDerWerff, Vox (09/09/15)

“The realest and rawest of TV rom-coms… acerbically brilliant” – James Minchin, Rolling Stone (11/6/15)

“‘You’re the Worst, one of the best” – Robert Bianco, USA Today

“You’re the Worst might be the best romantic comedy that television, a medium that has notoriously struggled to make good on the polarizing genre, has ever seen” – Kevin Fallon, The Daily Beast (09/09/15)

“[Stephen Falk] is a phenomenally gifted and funny writer. Each episode produced more laughs and more appreciation for his talent… ” – Tim Goodman, The Hollywood Reporter (09/09/15)

“I’m here to tell all of you that You’re the Worst is a series you should be watching. It’s one of the most well written, conscientious and funny shows on TV right now… ” – Terri Schwartz, IGN (10/23/15)

“… it’s one of the best shows on television.” – Michelle Ruiz, Vogue.com (10/21/15)
