canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Battle Creek: Cancel or Keep the New CBS Series?

by Trevor Kimball, May 3, 2015

Battle Creek TV show on CBS: cancel or renew for season 2?Between the competition from other channels and start time delays due to sports programming overruns, CBS has some real challenges on Sunday nights, particularly in the 10pm timeslot. Both The Mentalist (ended) and CSI (possibly cancelled) struggled this season. How’s newcomer Battle Creek been doing? Will it be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?

Battle Creek revolves around two mismatched law enforcement officers — Detective Russ Agnew (Dean Winters) and FBI Special Agent Milton Chamberlain (Josh Duhamel) — who have polar opposite views of the world and end up being partners. The rest of the cast includes Janet McTeer, Kal Penn, Aubrey Dollar, and Edward Fordham Jr.

The series got off to a poor start with a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.92 million viewers. That was a lower demo number than either CSI or Mentalist had hit this season. The viewership was pretty bad for a CBS show too.

In week two, the ratings for Battle Creek fell to a 0.83 in the demo with 6.93 million, a decline of 17% and 13% respectively. The numbers have gotten even worse in subsequent weeks — falling as low as a 0.7 rating and 5.58 million viewers.

Based on the ratings, there doesn’t seem to be any reason for CBS to renew Battle Creek for a second season. The numbers are just too low.

On the positive side, there are four episodes left after tonight’s airing. It looks like the network will let them air with the finale currently set for May 24th.

But, what do you think? Do you like the Battle Creek TV show on CBS? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Is it a better show than what the ratings seem to indicate?

It is not the show’s fault, it is the time slot. Same thing happened to CSI Miami, and that show was a winner until it was moved to Sunday night at 10. Don’t cancel this show, move it to another night. It is so much better than the reality shows.

DO NOT CANCEL! Josh Duhamel and Dean Winters are very good in this show! CBS is at fault for the ratings being low. The DVR gets half sometimes and none of it the rest of the time. It’s late constantly because of CBS PROGRAMMING! DO NOT CANCEL. MOVE IF YOU MUST!

Please please please renew Battle Creek!! I’m on Roku, so I don’t see a lot of ads for new shows, but I usually get something … I found Battle Creek out of pure luck, because I’ve heard absolutely *nothing* about it. (Maybe if it was on Hulu ..? 😉 I’ve got to wonder how much effort CBS is putting into this show. I could be completely wrong, but for a later-than-midseason replacement, on NFL Sunday night, on a night when the the other two dramas are already likely canceled … I’m a bit concerned that it won’t be sticking around… Read more »

This is the fault of CBS. I PVR alot of stuff and it’s a frustration during football season, or golf or whatever that you can never see anything because of delays. All of the shows in their Sunday night lineup (including CSI) deserve better and should be renewed. This is a funny and interesting show.

Please give “Battle Creek” more time….we enjoy it very much….Detective Agnew is terrific….can really appreciate the stuff he has to put up with! And Josh is perfect as the “perfect” FBI agent! So fun to watch! Hope CBS pays attention to the comments!!!!

This is the only new show that I am watching this season. The episodes are sometimes more humorous, sometimes more dramatic, but always entertaining. I hear lots of complaints about the time slot and delays in airing. (I always DVR it so I can watch it at my convenience.) I do hope CBS gives the show the opportunity it deserves, in a decent time slot. The writing is too clever and the cast too talented to let this one go to the TV Series Graveyard before giving it the care it deserves. And a little more marketing might help, too!

Frankly, I’m sick an tired all programming, not to mention life being pre-empted by stinking sports. Battle Creek has some real charm to it. I’m wondering what shows will ever survive other than generationally stupid programming.

DO NOT CANCEL BATTLE CREEK! it was placed in a time slot where even if you try to record it sports games bump it around so much its hard to even get on your DVR. i think the show has a lot of promise. each episode is building on the characters . there is always something interesting going on. its not one of those shows you keep checking to see if its over or not. we are getting to know the characters with all the good and bad they have to offer. the plots are clever as is the interaction… Read more »

I finally had to set up both Battle Creek and Madam Secretary to record at least 10 minutes long for that very reason. I’d come in from the road and find both shows cut off early after games ran long with after game commentaries (Basketball I can somewhat see, but Golf? You really need to go long to discuss Golf?)

Even though I like some of the actors here and personally find it amusing from time to time…..I never really thought it would take off too well. The story lines and directing just isn’t hitting it very well. There’s just not enough comedy to be funny or drama to be interesting. It’s like trying to draw hot water for dishes and only getting mildly warm….Not good enough for what’s needed. It had potential, but needed better scripts

No no no, here we go again. Give a little bit of time to see how it catches on with viewers before cancelling shows. Ďo not put more smarmy reality shows and cop shooting shows I find it quite entertaining and yet there is a good storyline. I like the actors and I certainly hope that they do not cancel it.

KEEP! But the fact that Taxi Brooklyn got cancelled after one season doesn’t bode well for Battle Creek. 🙁
