The struggle (and story) of the Bowman family ends tonight. The Colony TV show has been cancelled after three seasons but, would you have watched more episodes and a fourth season? Should it have been dropped?
A USA Network sci-fi drama, Colony stars Josh Holloway, Sarah Wayne Callies, Tory Kittles, Peter Jacobson, and Alex Neustaedter. The story unfolds in the near-future, in a world where citizens are under military occupation by the Colony Transitional Authority, as part of a large extraterrestrial invasion. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and wife Katie (Callies) were raising their daughter and two sons in Los Angeles, but were separated from the younger boy during the invasion and did everything they could to get him back. The third season kicked off six months after the season two finale, with Will and Katie rebuilding their family in the world beyond the walls. They begin a journey during which they uncover the truth behind the occupation. Once again, this family finds themselves having to choose sides.
The show debuted in January 2016 and got off to a positive start with a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.36 million viewers. The series lost some steam over the course of the season. The first year averaged a 0.38 rating with 1.13 million and it was renewed for a second season.
Season two of Colony launched in January 2017 and the 13 episodes ended up averaging a 0.26 demo rating with 814,000 viewers. Compared to season one, that was down by 31% in the demo and 28% in viewership. Still, Colony was renewed for a third year even before the season two finale aired.
USA didn’t start running season three until May 2018. Thus far, the third season has averaged a 0.17 demo rating with 672,000 viewers. Compared to last year, that’s down by 36% and 18%, respectively.
Colony is currently one of USA Network’s lower-rated scripted series but, other shows aren’t doing that much better. While it’s not a complete surprise that USA cancelled Colony, they could have easily renewed it to wrap up the story with a final season. Unfortunately, they opted to end the series after three seasons and 36 episodes.
What do you think? Do you think that USA should have cancelled the Colony TV show? Should the series have been renewed for a fourth (and final) season or, is season three a good place to end it?
Good show cut short, will miss it. maybe someone can pick it up. If not a movie?
If USA discontinues Colony after only 3 seasons, then that’s it for me with USA!! Season 3 finale was NOT an ending to this series. There should be at least a few more to finish the series. I am getting tired of USA and other stations canceling shows so abruptly!! This time I am standing my geound. If Colony is canceled or not even brought back for a few episodes to wrap up the series, then I’m done watching USA and several other networks. I understand about rating and such. But to drop a show without wrapping it up is… Read more »
That’s it. No more USA for me. Every time a show that I watch is cancelled I stop watching that network. So, good by USA.
Definitely would have watched Season 4. Late start to Season 3 and changing the day of the show helped kill it. Would be nice if USA wrapped it up. Sooner or later people will quit watching any sci-fi shows given the fact most seem to get canceled with no concluding season.
I love the series. Well written, well casted and exciting. SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN CANCELLED.
I love this show snd want to see it continue. Too many times networks cut and run without understanding or caring about the fan base. Given the amount of garbage shows and reality TV renewals I remain convinced the networks remain clueless on what ‘quality’ and ‘entertainment’ truly mean. Please bring Colony back.
USA barely did any promotion for the 3rd season! That’s why the numbers were down. USA didn’t want this show to continue. I blame USA for this, everynight I watch a show on every network I’m on, I see promotion for other upcoming shows, I never saw this on colony. There was no promotion for Colony by USA.
I was one of the better shows available outhere, my family and I haven’t looked fordward to a weekly scifi series since “Fallimg Skies”. Colony was easily in our top 5 for 3 years running. It was slow at times for sure but it always had something to offer. It would have been great for the fans to have completed the series responsibly and properly, in the same way as was done with Falling Skies.
I absolutely would most definitely have continued to watch Colony. Season 3 was not a good time to end the series at all, the story was really only getting started. It had a worldwide fan base that was crushed when it was cancelled, its such a shame, and loss to a lot of people.
Colony is an intelligently written, good tv show. It could’ve lasted many more seasons and it is gaining more fans still; even internationally.
#SaveColony #Outliers #Colony has to be brought back… USA Network let #Colony go and streaming companies say hello to a legendary made and legendary show! Season 4 and more!
USA barely did any promotion for the 3rd season! They wanted it to fail
They need to renew Colony. I always looked forward to it each week.
I want another season of Colony! It seemed like I waited forever for Season 3 and suddenly, no Season 4. No resolution. I’m NOT a happy viewer.
The premise was good, acting good however the writing was not consistent. The writers appeared to shy away from deciding on story goals, they could not make a decision on who the bad guys are. It was poorly planned journey with great expectations, lots of waiting for a story to appear. I did keep watching, waiting….
When you have seasons one or more years apart, you have to expect viewers to disappear. I enjoyed watching this show, but agonized over how far apart the seasons were, if it’s not on regularly people forget about it and move on to other shows thinking it’s gone. It would be nice if USA would have at least finished the story instead of leaving us hanging. Shame on them!
You are so right glad you pointed out the amount of time between seasons I am not a fan of this once a year format. Would be interesting to see if this format might contribute to fall in ratings, yes I know more choices but quality shows the viewers will support regardless of sat, cords, devices.
USA barely did any promotion for the 3rd season! You have to promote a show for viewers to know it’s on. USA didn’t want this to succeed. That’s why there was no promotion on any network for Colony
As usual, the one thing viewers like, is consistencies. The Networks are clueless to it. The Networks move shows around, then the show loses more viewers. Change the time slot, then the show loses even more viewers. Then the Networks reduced the number of episodes in a session to 10 and screwed up the time slot. Then the show loses still more viewers. On the other hand AMC figured this out. That is why they increased the Walking Dead shows to 20 episodes and made it a real series with 20 episode. Colony had a lot going for it. It… Read more »
I agree with Robert.
Yeah I liked this show, they really needed a season 4 to wrap it up and bow out gracefully, but NOOOO why bother just cancel it. Why’s everyone wanna be like Fox? So crazy 🙁
USA barely did any promotion for the 3rd season! So if no promotion for a show, viewers don’t know it’s going to be on.
