Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I did not care for the ‘more-is-more’ aspect of the season finale. Maybe the actors liked it because it gave them some very different things to do, but they should have taken a page out of the ‘Sopranos’ and left it low-key and business as usual. There aren’t that many solid television families and to break them up for a pow-sock! finale seems a little dishonest to the dynamic of the characters. And I did not like it that Allison would let a major criminal go just to get her husband back, which goes against everything she worked for in… Read more »
I have enjoyed watching the show for years but I had not watched it for a few months on a regular basis. i was not aware the show was ending. Although I normally enjoy the writing and the stories, the final episode was a big let down. I thought the show should have lasted longer. I think the writers could have written a better final episode. I wish it could somehow come back and continue on somehow.
I hated this final episode. I have watched every single one and this was such a downer that I went away depressed for days. I would have rather it continued on so that it could be made into a TV movie later on. You had a terrific amount of viewers and they did NOT like the way it ended. BTW, Allison looked terrible as an elderly lady and I don’t think that she would have let herself go like that………….Boo to the director and producers…………..
I loved this show and this family and like some others here I feel so devastated about Joe’s death and the thought of his family living without him. Yes, its just a TV show, but I saw myself in Allison (even though I’m not psychic) and I saw my husband in Joe (who is actually a hunky nerd). I loved Joe!! I was so sad to say good bye to the show anyway and then actually Joe’s death brought up some deep grief for me. My sister died suddenly just three months ago. My mother died unexpectedly when I was… Read more »
I too have watched every episode and enjoyed every one of them. I liked all the main characters within the show and found the show itself very very interesting and entertaining. Having only just watched the very last episode I must admit I was quite sad on two counts, one that it had to end, and to for the tragic way in which it ended. The writers didn’t have to leave an open ended story which might lead to a return but they could’ve ended on a happier note that could still signify the absolute end of the show. I… Read more »
This was a brutal end to the series. The writers were trying to make a clever point with the dreaming and the denial, but what a blow to the loyal viewers.
In contrast, the Monk finale was very merciful to the viewers who loved the characters which I appreciate even more now.
Loved it !! Was very emotional..cried through the whole episode. Will miss the Dubois family.
Been following the show for years and was so dissappointed with the finale. And I must live under a rock because I had no idea it was ending….then realized it said ‘Series finale’, not ‘SEASON finale’. I thought the last episode was lazily written, like the writers had just given up and wrote something up quick so they could go home early. Very poorly written, and a depressing way to end a good show.
I am so very sad to see this show end!!! The ending was NOT satisfactory. It was ended before it’s time!

HATED IT!!! HATED IT!!! After watching every episode for years and thinking that they were like a real family, it was such a downer to see Alison have to live 41 years without Joe. Her kids had to grow up without a father. Having Alison and Joe reunite in the afterlife was not the uplifting ending I was expecting. We deserved more, fans.
I thought it was terrific. Never missed an episode; hate to see it end. Death is a part of life so wasn’t surprised their last episode was a tragedy that affected their family. I thought the very end of Alison and Joe meeting up again was very uplifting. I especially like how they showed quick out-takes of each cast member and then their final farewell into the camera. This show will be missed!
good comment
I will miss this show so much – have been watching from the beginning. I enjoyed seeing the every day family life and thought Joe was such a comfort to Allison when she was waking up from her disturbing dreams. I thought it was terrible that they killed off Joe in such a fashion. Of course we were all waiting to see if this was another of Allison’s dreams but it wasn’t. It was very sad and I think, the way the world is today, we could have done with a more uplifting ending. I had to tape this episode… Read more »
i loved it!
Poorly written episode. The entire dream sequence did basically nothing to tell us how the character’s lives were going to turn out. Basically, it was a waste of 45 minutes. They should have just aired the first 5 minutes and the last 2 minutes. Or better yet, written a meaningful episode. Very dissapointing ending to the loyal fans.
