Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I was disappointed with the last episode of Medium. I do not like being manipulated. Allison needed to fade off to sleep after Joe’s ‘distressing’ phonecall. Instead, Allison is cut off from Joe on the phone and left crying when Joe’s plane ‘takes a plunge’, and the show jumps mysteriously seven years into the future (after a commercial break, of course). I had to rewind this ‘twice’ on my VCR, from which I was playing back the episode, to verify that I hadn’t missed something. Of course, the ending straightened that out, the big hole in the continuity between the… Read more »
Wow – not only are the followers so sad and disappointed that the show had to end, but then you had to kill Joe off – TWICE. It’s such poor treatment to fans. Uncalled for and really poorly done. One of the worst episodes, and that’s all we have to remember it by. It was one of the best shows, and you kicked it like a tiny dog! CBS without Two and a Half Men will have to close their doors. That’s all they have left. GOOD LUCK!
I hated the ending! It was a great show with twists and turns for the last seven years! Did not like that they killed off Joe!! They could have ended it with the family as usual and life goes on but they wanted to speed ahead and kill of Allison too! Didn’t want to see the lives of Joe and Allison end! Wanted a happy ending, get enough of sad endings in real life, this was tv, where’s my happy ending!! 🙂
PLEASE PLEASE BRING THIS BACK … I WAS SO DISSAPOINTED that you cancelled this show.. why do all the good ones have to go…
So sad this show is over really loved watching it and so did my kids. I thought the last show was of course sad but not typical which is why I loved this show so much…never typical! Thought the actors final goodbye at the end was very satisfying for true fans of the show.
Medium has been my favorite program since the beginning. The writing and acting was exceptional for a television series. Why would they cancel it with such a huge following. Everyone I know talks about this program. Please… reconsider… And by the way, I hated the final episode. It was all over the place… and showed a side of Alison as an attorney throwing her values aside that totally breaks character for her. She would have found a different way to find out if Joe was still alive. The way this season ended did not leave any opening for a reprieve… Read more »
Actually they said southwestern Arizona, and they were talking about the real Allison Dubois and her family.
i cant wrap myself around this me and my mother watch this show together and now its gone to us its like apart of our family as past away and we are so upset about this that we dont watch cbs any more
Medium was on of my three favorite shows on TV. I never missed an episode. The family life of Joe and Allison and their children was so believable and real. It was nice to finally see a family like that on TV. I can’t believe that CBS is cancelling such a great show, it is one of the only good ones out there. Every week it was different and alot of great acting went into this show. It was unpredictable which is what made it so entertaining. Not to mention you just fell in love with all the characters. I… Read more »
I can’t believe I’m still posting, but in for a penny, in for a pound. First, although NBC aired the show for so many years, it was a CBS production. Don’t ask me how that works… it’s a new world. For those who want it back? Forget it. NOBODY CARES! Believe me, I contacted everyone I could in advance and nobody cared. Like I’ve said, I felt the show had at least two good years of storyline left. I don’t think this was all about the network. Why didn’t Glenn Gordon Caron try selling it to a cable network? Why… Read more »
I have been watching Medium since the beginning episode .I thought the writers did a great job coming up with creative ideas so the show would seem believable and not boring.I loved the cast of characters ,they are talented and made their family seem like a real family.I did’t realize the show was being canceled until recently and would like to know why?I will reall miss The show ,the actors and the writers.I am still wondering what happened to Medium??????????????????
I did not see the first few seasons but once I started watching I was hooked and so was my 16 year old, did not like Joe being killed at all and hated the show ending just as much, hope reruns show up somewhere so I can catch up on the first few seasons I missed. To the cast, loved you all, you were great!!
I didn’t look at the series the first 2 yrs…once I started I was hooked! I loved the show and even thought the ending was a bit Old Schoolish…I thought it was befitting for the ending of this type show! Loved it! At least we wont have to wonder or campaign for the show to come back (laugh)…we know the deal!
This episode really depressed me. Call me a wuss, but I couldn’t stop crying. I’m 15 (please don’t judge me) and I’ve been watching Medium since it started. This will leave a major void in my week, as it is one of maybe 5 shows that I watch. I can’t believe it’s over. How DARE they kill Joe. TWICE no less. I’m not ready for this show to end, and now I won’t watch CBS at all. The shows are crap. Even if the network had to drop the show, they could have waited for a full season to end… Read more »
I thought the show was sad, sad, sad… I wish they could have done a two hour episode. Personally, I felt the show had a couple good years of storyline left, but the producers didn’t even TRY to sell it to a cable network. What everyone says is true… it reflected family life in a very realistic and positive light. I’ll miss this show alot, but who cares, right? Not CBS that’s for sure. I’m surprised they were able to keep the basic idea secret. Who would have thought Joe would be killed? Oh, and to the other poster who… Read more »
I will really miss this show. I looked forward to it weekly, as it always came up with something surprising. I enjoyed the cast and the TV family dynamics. I agree with one of the other submitions that this will leave a void in my week. Isn’t there any way to keep it going?
