Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I lost interest in the series awhile ago, and thought that maybe I would watch the last episode since the series has ended, but after reading the synopsis of the last episode, I think it would remind me too much of the ending the Lost, which really haunted me for awhile. And I don’t want to be haunted by the ending to Medium. For now, I would rather think of Allison and her family doing the same things they were doing when I last watched the series. … After reading Karen’s post, I thought that maybe it was an appropriate… Read more »
LOVED this show. Could not have HATED the ending more!! UGH. I just don’t know where their heads were at. Maybe they were trying to do something “different”? Please, not for the finale of a beloved show! GAH. HATE HATE HATE. I am going to pretend it ended the week before.
I think this was a great show! I am going to miss it terribly. I wish it was not the end of it. I liked then ending but did not want it to end. I think Patricia Arquette was wonderful. Thanks for all the great shows.
I was extremely disappointed with this last show!
It has bothered me ever since I watched it!
This was one of my favorite shows on TV and what a terrible way to end it!
I watched the last episode without knowing it was really the last one. It was good for me because my husband and I loved watching Medium . He died Dec. 12 ,2010 so I like to think he is watching and waiting for me just like Joe waited for Allison.
I just discovered this show this year. I loved it and am so very sad to see it canceled so soon after finding it. I will have to look for the reruns. I certainly hope there will be reruns. As for the final episode I thought it was very well done. In the end it was uplifting.
You know this REALLY is upsetting! I before Medium ended did not mind so much sitting at home on a friday night as my husband was at high school sporting events…. NOW it sucks! Thanks CBS!
I cried myself to sleep because of the last episode of Medium. Why would they make Joe die? It was the worst conclusion I’ve ever seen. I thought they should have left their faithful viewers happy, not sad. I also hope this isn’t the last show Patricia Arquette will be in because Joe and her were my favorite TV couple. Whoever worte the theme and story for the episode is someone who is insenseative to viewers everywhere. To me all the episode did was leave a gaping hole in my heart, and really didn’t anwer all my questions. Couldn’t they… Read more »
At first I felt very let down that Joe died. But after thinking abou it, the whole series was based on the premise that there is life beyond death and that we may be re-united with our loved ones once they pass on. Joe’s parents had already died and I would like to believe that they were with him when he died, and that he was watching his family throughout the years. He did not want to be a constant intrusion on their lives from the other side. People have to live in the here and now. I think that… Read more »
Joe should not have died. One of the key elements of the series was how Joe had to deal with Allison’s abilities, which did intrude on their life quite a bit – especially at night when Joe tried to sleep (how many times during the series run did she wake up and Joe laid there mumbling as he was awaken also)? So, with all Joe went thru in accepting Allison for who she is and all the things they went thru together, his reward was to die and NOT get to spend his whole life with her as the kids… Read more »
I totally agree!
I believe this show had many avenues the writers could have explored. The girls inherited dream factor, Joe could hav ebeen stranded on a sea island for years and the girls and Allison continue to dream of his existence.
Eventually bring him back as Allison becomes a DA and he once again becomes the strong hold of this strange but love filled family nest. This would have let to many different episodes with the girls Allision and Joe each focusing on the individual struggles during the uncertatinty of Joe’s life.
I truly hate to see it go.
I was quite disappointed to watch this episode; then discover it was the finale of the series. One of the few good shows that was playing. So sad to take a great show like this off the air.
I didn’t like the ending. So sad! Everybody loved Joe and he shouldn’t have died. I imagine an ending where perhaps Joe’s job is transferred to Europe. That can happen in real life. The DA office gives Allison a good bye party. Ariel goes to college. The middle daughter is excited about moving to another country and learning a new language. They say good bye to the old house. They go to bed in their new home and Joe kisses Allison good night and says pleasant dreams. Lights out. Then her eyes open when she has a dream of an… Read more »
Ohhhh! I love your ending…
To add to my imaginary ending above, the middle child Bridgette is totally for moving to Paris or Belgium because she has been studying French in school. Joe already knows French because he was born there (how’s that!) The Europeans learn of Allison’s abilities and will keep her employed.
I’m going to delete the episode from my TiVo and tell my wife your ending! Thank you!
I miss the program so much!!!! I wish they or cbs would have another program such as this. thank-you
There could be a spin off. The three girls come back as adults with a new twist working together but maybe not with the DA
