Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

Seeing the real AD on the Housewives so totally turned me off to the show, I stopped watching. She demonstrated not only her drinking problem, but also her total lack of control over any level of “gift” she might have- and frankly that’s pretty questionable as well. AD needs to crawl back under the rock she came out from under.
This was a great show and another stupid move by the network. Let’s put on more mindless rediculous shows that are vulgar or are reality TV. Silly silly silly networks
I loved the fictional story of Medium. I loved the creative plots (and the hilarious one with the identity theft guy). The best part was the on-going romance. Joe was the sexiest guy on TV because he was really smart (engineers are cool), and he was kind and thoughtful and loving. Their marriage was the good kind where they really talk and hear each other. I am lucky to have one of those kind of marriages. The final episode was a brutal surprise.
I LOVED Medium….wish it were STILL on:(
i really loved the series i watched every episode some twice but when i saw the real mrs dubois on the housewifes of beverly hills i was horrified that i wasted any time on the show
This is one show I looked foward to watching. Still unclear at the reason for the conclusion of the episode. This is a great show that will suffer based on ratings on a time slot that is not viewed often. Shame on you for moving them from Monday to Friday or however many times you moved their time slot. We loved them and would like to see them brought back…… just saying
Wait a minute., that was no warning at all. Bring it Back.
I will miss it too..
I’m glad it was canceled because the real Allison Dubois ruined her character when she opened her mouth on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. She ruined it for the show.
If allison was so psychic, why couldn’t she predict the dinner party that sealed her fate. She’s a jerk. I feel bad for the people that worked on the show who lost their jobs and income due to AD’s carelessness and evil behavior. Patricia Araquette deserves an Emmy for making this clown look good. Had I known AD was such a vile person, I would have never spent a moment watching Medum. She doesnt deserve a cent for being a fraud.
I don’t think the show was “cancelled” in the traditional sense. I agree with a lot of the comments above, I thought it was a quality show and looked forward to watching each week – I loved the characters, the players, the stories. I think the show was abruptly ended – either by an exec producer who no longer wanted to work with his soon-to-be ex-wife, or the soon-to-be Ex who actually did most of the production work (“make it happen without me, jerk”) – or the title character herself, the Medium Allison Dubois, who made an absolute humiliating ass… Read more »
I have loved this show from the beginning. It had such realistic family life situations and showed a real, committed marriage between Allison and Joe. I just sobbed at the end. I had no idea where the plot was going and it kept me guessing. The way in which each character got to say good-bye was also very touching. I thought it was brilliant and will miss watching this each week.
I thought it was a real nice ending, I cried for two days (yes I am now a crazy person who misses fictional characters!) I was a huge fan of the show and all the actors. It was also a great touch how they all said good-bye (to a great song, by the way) Good-bye Medium you will be missed!
While I ‘got’ the message at the end, that we’re reunited after death with those we love, I felt the series finale crammed far too much action into a single episode and as a result was confusing and unsatisfactory. Many series have a two-hour finale; if that had been the case with Medium, some of the important changes (Duvalos as Mayor, Ariel pregnant and living elsewhere, etc.) could have been more fully explored and given those characters/actors an appropriate amount of time on screen. The whole thing felt thrown together, as if the network didn’t want to pay the team… Read more »
I miss the show. I never missed one episode in all the years it was on. I can’t believe they too it off air. I hated the way it ended.
The ending was powerful and very emotional. I think Medium was a unique show and one that we likely not see again. I believe that they had more stories to tell. It actually had a very good rating for Friday night. I am not sure what networks expect on a night that has had low ratings for years. You could put American Idol on Friday nights and it would get 50% of the ratings it normally would get. Friday and Saturdays nights is just not a night for power ratings for shows. They can create and replace all the shows… Read more »
