NBC Summer 2012 TV Ratings

Published: September 8, 2012

Summer 2012 NBC ratingsThe peacock network is still struggling to find some new hit shows so it’s no surprise that they’re running several new reality shows this summer. America’s Got Talent continues to be one of their most successful shows each year.

There’s lots of information that NBC takes into consideration when cancelling or renewing a TV series but the ratings are the biggest factor, particularly the 18-49 demographic. That’s the group that the advertisers want to reach the most so the networks must cater to them.

Viewership is obviously lower during the summer months (here’s the NBC report card for the regular 2011-12 season).

The following chart incorporates “summer” season ratings data through Thursday, September 6, 2012.

A couple of things to remember:
The averages included in these charts are based on the final numbers, not the fast affiliate ratings that are reported the morning after a show airs. These final numbers become available one to three days later (depending on holidays or weekends).

Demo numbers are reported by Nielsen using the 10th decimal place (2.1, for example). In these charts, we’re including the rounded demo average as well as the average in 100ths (2.14, for example) in parenthesis so you can get a better idea of how the number’s been affected by the latest episode’s rating.

The letter grades are relative and are based on the individual network’s overall performance. The networks all have very different gauges for success. A hit show on The CW would get quickly cancelled on CBS. Our system for coming up with letter grades isn’t perfect but it should still give you an idea of where the shows stand when compared to others on the same network.

*The letter grades for TV series that run on Friday and Saturday nights are weighted a little differently to compensate for them airing on little-watched nights.

What do you think? How are your favorites doing? What would you like to see cancelled or renewed?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Don’t cancel SAVING HOPE!!! D: I’ve been telling all of my friends about this show and they are all really intrigued and are planning to now catch up. I work in a hospital and because of that, I normally can’t stand most hospital shows (with the exception of Scrubs!), but I surprisingly LOVED SAVING HOPE! I watched all eight episodes within a day! I am so hooked! I’m HOPING FOR CHARLIE!! AND I’M HOPING YOU DON’T CANCEL SAVING HOPE!! I found Saving Hope on Hulu.com while looking for a new show to get into. DID YOU KNOW… Read more »

I am addicted to Saving Hope! Maybe if it was promoted better, it would be higher in the standings. I never miss it and would be so upset to see it go!!!!!!!

Saving Hope is truly a saving grace. The last episode on 7/26 was a cliff hanger, Was it the final one. I also vote for Harry’s Law. Such beautiful dialogue and acting

Dear NBC,
Please SAVE this new medical drama saving hope. Grays Anatomy is struggling and saving hope seems fresh. I do you think your network need to do more promotion for the show like in canada they have done. There are super talented actors like Erica, Michael and Huse are all outstanding. Put these actors on your morning shows and late night shows….. trust me!

The first episode of Saving Hope did not catch my attention. Michael Shank’s character seemed so boring and so unfeeling and the character of Dr. Reid seemed overly emotional and I hardly believed her skills as a doctor. But I try to watch new programs for at least 3 episodes to see if the writers can get into their “groove” which they apparently did and I really like the program now. If the series was canceled, then at least the storyline wasn’t left hanging. However, I’m hoping there is a Season 2, but if the cancellation of Harry’s Law is… Read more »

I absolutely love “Saving Hope” — it ties with “Perception” for my favorite new show of the summer, but have no interest whatsoever in any of the other shows on NBC’s list — haven’t watched them and don’t plan to. I am intensely saddened by the fact that it apparently has no chance for renewal. Is there any hope that Season 2 will be available on DVD if it is produced in Canada but not picked up in the US?

Agree!! NBC needs to promote this show a lot more than they are. It’s a great show that deserves a much better attention and viewers than it’s getting.

I agree with Donna and others…Harry’s law was a great show. I am also a “senior citizen” and it really annoys me to think that we don’t count in the ratings. I like a lot of shows that I’m sure the “younger citizens” also watch. I don’t agree with the ones who don’t like Saving Hope. I really like that show also. I haven’t watched it from the beginning, but now that I’ve found it, I wait to see what’s going to happen. Is Charlie going to come out of the coma??? I hope it is renewed.

I gave up on America’s Got Talent last season. They are so predictible as to the winner. If you a down on your luck African American- Nick will slant the show in your favor. If you’re gay and have been made fun of in school- you’ve got a real good chance. Last season- the final 4 were 3 out of 4 talented very talented acts. The 3 talented ones lost and the hard luck African American guy who was at best – a weak Frank Sinatra impersonator- Won with Nick over-hyping him all the way. That was it for me-I… Read more »
