Though the Rizzoli & Isles TV show remains TNT’s highest rated scripted series, it won’t be returning for an eighth season. The decision has been made to end the crime drama after 105 episodes. The cable channel is clearly ready to say goodbye but, are the viewers?
Rizzoli & Isles revolves around the unlikely but highly effective partnership of police detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and medical examiner Doctor Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander). Lorraine Bracco, Jordan Bridges, Bruce McGill, Adam Sinclair, and Idara Victor co-star.
The ratings for Rizzoli & Isles have been falling for quite awhile. Season four averaged a 1.06 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.24 million viewers. The current (seventh) season is averaging a 0.56 demo rating with 4.07 million.
It’s worth noting that nearly all of TNT’s shows are way down season-to-season and Rizzoli & Isles is actually up in viewership when compared to season six.
So, if it’s still TNT’s top show, why is it ending? Likely because of money. The show has been on for a long time and shows typically get more expensive to produce in later years. The stars were supposedly open to making new seasons but Turner Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Reilly has said that all involved “felt like it was time.”

I will really miss watching Rizzoli & Isles. It is one of the best shows that TNT has on right now. I can’t believe that they couldn’t of done a few more seasons. Doesn’t make sense to cancel a show that is up in ratings and put shows on like Southland that promotes or glamorizes crime.
I think it’s a shame that you are caceling Rizzoli & Isles . What a great program. I’ve watch all of there shows and loved them. I’m so sorry you’re taking it off the air. Six seasons is definetely not enough! Putting on a new discusting program on and keeping Major Crimes which is so boring.

No, it should NOT have been canceled. When you look at some of the shows that stay on for yrs that are awful or the new ones being pushed… this one was a gem.

Rizzoli & Isles is a great and entertaining TV show and a great cast. It is unfortunate TNT management chose to cancel a show so many enjoyed. However, as a consumer, my only recourse is to cease watching TNT.
My husband and I really enjoy this series, the characters are great in their interactions. I truly hope another station will pick up this series.

I have been watching Rizzoli & Isles from the first episode and I don’t think this show should be ending. I am not ready for the final episode next week but I will be watching and hoping that some how they will be able to return one day. You can bet I’ll be watching if or when they do. You know they have something great when they are able to make you feel so many emotions you just can’t find the words.

I watch reruns of R & I several times a week on other channels, usually late in the night..I think it comes on twice on one channel. Like The Closer with Kayra Sedgwick..I watch that 3 times a week on other channels.
One of the best shows on television. I think many left because of how they have aired the show, most people won’t watch a show that splits a season in half and airs to halves on opposite ends of the year. I love how this show is good for most everyone in the family and I think the actors are all exemplary. The networks are splitting seasons as well, like How to Get Away With Murder…the networks split the season because of all the holidays, and come back when it’s Neilsen time for ratings usually Feburary.
The show should not be ending, but TNT doesn’t want to pay the costs to keep it going. Nobody is coming to save the day. They would have to pay Angie Harmon real money, and I guess they don’t want to replace her and try with someone new.
This is one of my favorite shows. Both leads are extraordinary and i believe all the co-stars are strong, particularly Rizzoli’s mother. I am sorry to see it go.
Maybe – there will be a spin off!!??
Am going to really miss this show. Sorry that it is going away and hoping that Amazon or Netflix will jump in and save the day and produce new episodes online! Please!
Or it could become a Hulu Original Series, like The Mindy Project did!

We enjoy this show and would have continued watching. The show I think has lagged I. Story and interest is Major Crimes. I’d rather they had cancelled that one.
Major Crimes is a FANTASTIC show. I stopped watching R&I years ago because it is nothing but the same Llama drama since Janet T left. And by the way, MC is actually the number 2 show on cable FOLLOWED by R&I.
I too love Major Crimes. I watched how it developed from The Closer with Kyra Sedgwick. Just saw the last episode of Brenda Lee Johnson leaving that show and paving the way for Major Crimes to begin with Capt Raydor as new commander of the unit.
I like this drama.
