Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
Wicked bummed….I really liked this show. They should of carried out season two with the same cast members and gone onto the whole genetation 2 thing. Nothing seems to survive more than season one anymore….super dissapoited.
The setting is great to look at but every character is unlikable–even Matt Dillon and he is likable in everything he has done. The casting was all wrong and the plot points are disjointed. The behaviors don’t truly exhibit people living in fear or disillusionment. None of this still is convincing enough even though the lines they say and how they try to perform it is trying to pull this off. And honestly, the wife and son are annoying and don’t seem to be in the same family as Ethan (Matt Dillon). Weird.
When will these so called TV execs give a TV show a fair chance? Over and over again, promising shows are shutdown before an audience and following can even be established while other shows that few people care about continue to air year after year. We have more than enough CSI, Criminal minds and cop shows to go around. Time to give the dystopian/scifi genre a chance!!!
Would have loved to watch a second season of Wayward Pines!
They promoted this show from jump it was a special 10 episode series no intention of dragging the show out..Plus I woulent see M…Night Shyamalan making this special into a season 2 dragging the story into something dumb just to keep it going..IM. A HUGE FAN of the series and love what they have done episode 1-9 so far. And see a great ending with a signature M.Night twist…Like S.O.A just let the show go out on top. Alto roof great shows and moviiies goo to far n ruin great work
In an age where reality TV rules the airways, yawn, Wayward pines brings a brilliant new concept for people like me who enjoys the twists and turns of a great scifi experience. It’s a shame that you’re canceling a program that has the potential for a loyal audience, like a “Trekkie” if you will! Bad move fox!
I love this show and if it’s finished I won’t be able to handle it. I love wayward pines. It is the only thing I actually look forward to every week. Please make more seasons
Terrible writing and plot holes aside. This show never had the ability to sustain itself past one season.
Probably the biggest reason for not continuing the show is not having the original actors on contract since this show was done two years ago. I can’t see watching a second season with a different cast of characters. Just wouldn’t do it for me.
I can’t believe you are canceling Wayward Pines and the Following. Yet you are leaving your cheesy reality shows on. Too bad for viewers.
I agree. TV doesn’t pay attention to the people who watch, it seems like shows that do well are the first ones they want to ax.
Agreed!
Pls keep it going good and suspenseful
Would loved to have seen at least 1 more season of this creepy show. Now it seems a little rushed. I would have rather it been a 2hour per night series as with ‘Texas Rising’. I have a feeling that it will leave us hanging or ‘ticked off’ at Fox like we were, with that overly long never understood series, with a disappointing finale, LOST. Put more effort into the endings as was done with the openings of these shows, that’s if you want us to switch from our cable channels….know what I mean Jim Beam? Melissa Leo is superb… Read more »
People don’t read or listen. Besides its gonna end where the book series ends. It’s over folks.
I’m fine with the show ending. Better a good short show than a long drawn out senseless show.
September is season two for You’re the Worst. A laugh riot show. Go binge on season one !
I love this show it is scary and down right twisted like a twilight zone episode
