Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
Before watching the first episode of Wayward Pines I considered not bothering to watch it because M. Night Shyamalan was involved. I KNEW there wouldn’t be a second season because of his past history of shows not being renewed and having sudden inexplicable endings. I should have followed my instincts. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME! NEVER AGAIN!!
Please renew. That isn’t right doing that. I’m very upset
Yes…that series is fantasic…can’t believe it didn’t get a season 2. Too complex for simple minds? Right. Book a lame reality show.
My husband and LOVE this show! Bring it back and get the rest of them garbage shows off!
Don’t cancel….love this show!
Didn’t FOX do this with Almost Human & Firefly?
Please renew Wayward Pines for a second season! My
family and I love this show.
People didn’t read the article. The show is the second best show they have this summer and they STILL cancelled it!!! It is official, Fox hates sci fi and genre tv. They greenlight them just to cancel them and piss us off!!! Why would anyone wanting to make a genre show go to Fox?!
I live for Wayward Pine!
It’s Firefly all over again……
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SHOW!! PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!
One of the best tv shows Tooooooo bad no second season.
This was promoted since the beginning ad a mini series for only 1 season and 10 episodes. Why is anyone surprised that there’s no second season? It was never meant to have one, just like The Wisperers.
I just started watching this show today- July 18th. There’s a marathon on FXM. I really got into it- so I decided to see if it’s still on & I see this ****. Now i have to decide whether or not I want to keep watching or stop now- when it’s just starting to get really good as his family just got there & he just got appointed sheriff. This show has so much potential. Ugh- so frustrated!!
So uber sad there won’t be a 2nd season!
Me & my hubbs were & ARE big fans & would of watched it religiously!
