Though there was talk that the Wayward Pines TV series could return for a second season, FOX seems to have killed that idea. The network has revealed that next week’s installment will be the last one — the series finale.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series is currently FOX’s second-best performer of the summer, beating out shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Bullseye, Boom!, Are You Smarter Tahn a 5th Grader?, and animated Golan the Insatiable. Wayward Pines is averaging a 1.09 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.79 million viewers.
Based on the season’s performance, FOX execs were considering renewing the show for another year — most likely with a different cast and characters in the same mixed-up world. However, last night’s promo clearly notes that next week’s episode marks the end of the show. Take a look:
For what it’s worth, back in January executive producer M. Night Shyamalan was open to a second season but was cautiously optimistic. He said, “If the opportunity is there. We won’t do it unless it’s organically and creatively correct.”
Executive producer and showrunner Chad Hodge recently told TVLine, “The promise that we’ve been making — which is that there’s a beginning, middle and end in these 10 episodes — is a real promise and we deliver on it. Could there be a possibility of a Season 2? Sure, of course, and you’ll see a window to that, but it also is a complete ending as it is.”
What do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines TV show? Would you have watched a second season?
7/24 update: Though FOX advertised the last episode as the “series finale”, talks of a second season continue.
I love the series. Refreshing from all the reality and killer shows. Would definitely watch a season 2.
My family love this show. Here in the UK. We watched all the episodes back to back. Why oh why do the all best series discontinue?
Fox you have a fantastic show, one of the best I’ve seen since The Strain, don’t give up on it. Give the viewers what they need, entertainment!!
I just watched all of the 1st season episodes in one day and was on the edge of my seat after each one. Give us a second season, you can’t just leave us hanging like that. Get real FOX, it’s a great show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They needed to work on the story for longevity. Wormhole back to 2014 to change the dynamics and keep the storyline moving. I hope they sell it to another Network.
We are very disappointed of this show’s cancellation! YES.. we would want more seasons. It would wonderful if SyFy would pick it up.
It has been an intriguing show, very entertaining, thrilling and with top-notch actors!
Yes I believe there should be a season two the is one of the best shows of the summer
I love “Wayward Pines”, it’s such a good show and I love mystery shows with all different kinds of twists and turns like “Pretty Little Liars” on ABC Family. I’m kinda upset it’s ending and Matt Dillon is my favorite actor ever but I guess it’s just another show that’s come and gone.
BRING IT BACK!!!!!
fox all over! any sci fi fan would recognise the potential in this show, i blame fox for not promoting it correctly, why do all the networks concentrate on reality shows and different twists on cops and robbers. nothing original ever lasts!
I think the show was awesome!!! I think it could have went on for a few more years. I love the story line & characters & the story line was nothing like I’ve seen before, and I am a Sci-fi Junkie!! PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!! My husband & I never miss an episode. Please bring it back..
Why would you cancel a show who’s rating is second?
Wayward Pines has become one of my families favorite shows and I would love to see it renewed for another season. Our family ranges in age from 17 to 54. It is so frustrating to us that you would cancel this show with great characters and a story with depth and so great room for expansion and bring on a new show like “Knock, Knock” which my family will never watch.
Yes I would’ve watched the second season plz Dont take it off I live it
This show never had the ability to last beyond one season.
Love the show would definitely watch it if they decided to make a second season
