Wolf Hall is returning. In a recent Radio Times article, the series’ director Peter Kosminsky said the British historical drama will have a second season. Though, it may take a few years.
Based on Hilary Mantel’s Thomas Cromwell novels, Wolf Hall premiered on BBC Two and on PBS last year.
Kosminsky said the historical series, which follows Cromwell’s (Mark Rylance) rise to power in the court of England’s King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis), may take a few years because Mantel has not finished writing the third book yet. Season one covered the first two novels in her planned trilogy. Kosminsky said it may take at least two years:
She has still got at least a year of writing on the novel and we have to get it adapted which will take quite a while because it’s probably going to be quite a thick book. It’s not going to be any time soon I’m afraid. Two years down the road I would think, probably.
He added that there might also be difficulty getting the cast and crew back together:
Getting that team back together is a challenge [as well]. First of all we have to get Peter Straughan the adaptor to be available and we have to get Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis into a studio together at the same time. They are both international superstars now so it’s going to be quite a challenge but we will do it.”
The director remains optimistic though, saying the second and final series will be “exciting” and unpredictable:
What’s particular exciting it it’s not, ‘OK, just dramatise the short period of time between Anne Boleyn’s death and Cromwell’s death’. She’s going back in time, she’s going into memory, earlier parts of Cromwell’s life, and so it’s not going to be predictable in any way.”
What do you think? Did you watch season one of Wolf Hall? Are you excited for a second season?
Come on BBC lets have Wolf Hall back for a second season. There is so much more to tell. The cast, production & locations were outstanding, a pure joy to watch!
What a beautifully nuanced Cromwell! Film and lighting both unobtrusive and, thus, exceedingly effective. The Anne Boleyn/Henry VIII saga has never been told with such clarity. We’re looking forward to more, Bravo MT!
Wolf Hall is PBS drama at its best. I was inspired to read Hilary Mantel’s novels which I’ve done and await Season Two eagerly. Also, I have a new interest in Hans Holbein’s portraits of the Tudors-
fascinating to meet them up close.
I loved this series which appears to be universal sentiment. But to end this series with AB’s death is an incomplete ending. This has not completed the circle of the total forces set in motion with Episode 1. Thomas Cromwell’s fate and the develeopments after Anne’s beheading are necessary for a complete story here.
would love second season- think it should be done to honor the great movers of history that the 1st season portrayed with insight and diligence
I enjoyed the first season very much and am looking forward to the second. The Tudor period, in particular Henry VIII, is of great interest to me. Thank you!!
Great show and very true to the age.
Unfortunately inaccurate portrayal of Thomas Cromwell’s father though.
He was a wealthy mercer and descendant of the Barons Cromwell, and the Smyth’s an knightly Welsh dynasty no t a blacksmith at all
think they hinted at both
I have loved Season 1 and already purchased it. I am looking forward to Season 2 and it looks like it is a longer wait than I would like.
Can’t wait to see season 2 and more of Mark Rylant aka Thomas Cromwell!
I am eager to know if there are still plans in the works for Wolf Hall series 2 in 2017. I have looked on line several times however I see no updates for season 2 as of May of 2017.
I have never seen another actor use their eyes to such effect as Rylance does..There is so much depth to his portrayal of Cromwell.
absolutely stunning, cant wait, love the non saccharine view of thomas moore, never liked him.
I loved Wolf Hall! I have learned so much of histor that up til this point, I found confusing! The acting is superb and I am eagerly awaiting a Season 2 of this fascinating seties!
I am very excited that there is still a possibility of a second season of Wolf Hall. There has always been shows about the wives of Henry VIII but to have a series about what happened behind the scenes of very famous historical facts is extremely interesting to see. Good luck making it happen.
Is there a second season of Wolfhall, if so when will it air?
Looking forward to seeing Wolf Hall II.
