Why did Designated Survivor have to go? Recently, Variety speculated on the reasons why ABC cancelled the TV show after two seasons.
The political drama centers on Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland), a low-level cabinet member who becomes President of the United States after a massive attacked on the capitol. The cast also includes Natascha McElhone, Adan Canto, LaMonica Garrett, Kal Penn, Maggie Q, Malik Yoba, Paulo Costanzo, Zoe McLellan, Ben Lawson, Tanner Buchanan, and Mckenna Grace.
According to Variety, there are several reasons why ABC decided to cancel Designated Survivor. For one, the drama was sinking in the ratings. So far, season is averaging a .71 in the 18-49 demo and only 3.951 million viewers.
Secondly, the show has gone through four showrunners in only two seasons. And, to cap things off, season three would have required Designated Survivor to move production from Toronto to Los Angeles, a costly move for a low-rated series.
What do you think? Have you seen Designated Survivor? Would you have watched a third season?
Must watch tv for me. I would have continued watching.
I just don’t understand how a great show gets cancelled and new horrible ones can go on and on and on. TV is going to the pot !
I loved the show it should have a 3rd season
Another slavish genuflection to the great god Ratings. It’s heartbreaking and shameful. Sitcom inanity prevails over authentic portrayals of character and contemporary situations. Maybe enough outcry will make ABC reconsider and return to being a network with a soul instead of a submissive servant of the repulsive god Ratings.
My feelings are hurt. One of my favorites. Will miss seeing a make believe world where a politician actually was willing to have the needs of the nation above his own.
I’ve watched and recorded every episode. One of the best TV shows ever. Some people don’t like smart television!
Loved it, recorded it. Will miss it. Guess they should have had more sex, foul language and gore instead of plot, action and relativity.
We loved the show. Just seems as though intelligent shows go and idiot sitcoms like B if Bang stay. Poor decision.
I love this show, it’s different it’s suspenseful, it reminds me a lot of The West Wing. I really wish you would reconsider keeping the show.
I love watching Hannah Wells get to the bottom of who is killing her friends and who bombed the capital building. Don’t forget Keifer Sutherland, it’s refreshing to see someone that really cares about the people. Even though this is just a drama and a show it gives you hope that there really is a president that cares about the people and is putting their best interest first.
I was a devoted watcher originally. But, the plot kept folding back on itself. It was like the writers forget the original premise of the story.
Once they killed off the first lady, I felt like they had gone off the rails. Like a main character had to die to boost ratings.
Not too surprising. It’s non climatic anticlimatic solution to the Capitol bombing was a disappointment and it’s been meandering ever since. They wasted the potential on this one.
The show was excellent until Michael Fox joined the cast
I think his part caused the cancellation
Very disappointed show has been cancelled loved watching it
One of the few shows I watched regularly. Recorded it so I never missed. I thought it gave insight on how things might be in Washington DC.
Very disappointed in the cancellation. It was the only show I have sat down to watch and have not missed an episode. Bring it back!!
