canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

General Hospital: 2018-19 Season Ratings (updated 10/8/19)

Published: October 8, 2019

General Hospital TV show on ABC: season 56 ratings (cancelled or renewed?)

(courtesy GH Facebook)

As has become the norm, ABC didn’t announce if General Hospital had been renewed for another year but the show wasn’t cancelled either. They just kept it on the air. The network did cancel The Chew (which replaced All My Children in 2011) so they could expand the Good Morning America brand with GMA Day. Clearly, the ABC execs aren’t afraid to shake up the status quo again. Will General Hospital survive to see a 57th season for the 2019-20 broadcast season? How will it do in the ratings? Stay tuned.

Debuting on April 1st of 1963, General Hospital revolves around the loves, lives, and deaths of the people of Port Charles, New York. The current season’s cast includes Maurice Benard, Tamara Braun, Steve Burton, Matt Cohen, William deVry, Chad Duell, Michael Easton, Hayley Erin, Genie Francis, Nancy Lee Grahn, Elizabeth Hendrickson, Briana Nicole Henry, Rebecca Herbst, Roger Howarth, Finola Hughes, Lisa LoCicero, Eden McCoy, Billy Miller, Kelly Monaco, Emme Rylan, Michelle Stafford, Kirsten Storms, Donnell Turner, Maura West, and Laura Wright.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available. You can see how the ratings for the four soap operas compare here.

Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.

For comparisons: The 2017-18 season of General Hospital averaged a 0.61 rating in the 18-49 female demographic with 2.56 million total viewers.

Raw data courtesy Soap Opera Network.

How are your shows doing in the ratings? Check the current rankings:
A&E | ABC | AMC | Bravo | CBS | CMT | The CW | FOX | Freeform | FX | FXX
Hallmark | HBO | History | MTV | NBC | OWN | Showtime | Starz | Syfy | TBS
TNT | TV Land | USA Network | WGN America

What do you think? Do you still like General Hospital TV series? Would you like to see it cancelled or renewed for additional seasons?

Please renew. Have Hulu just for this reason. I work and watch it in the evenings. Have been a fan for over 20 years. Please renew. It is one of the best soaps left, actually the best I should say

I have been watching soaps for years and I love them! It’s a shame they are pulling one soap after anotherin favor of a stupid talk show or news programs. We don’t need more news day and night! Give us more soaps that keep us tuning in day after day, year after year! It’s nice to get involved in interesting storylines!

I have been a fan of GH for over 20 years. Please don’t cancel it! While some of the story lines are rather boring and tiresome, especially Ava and Ryan. Both characters could be killed off and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings. So sick of the Ryan serial killer plot, catch him and kill his character off. Kevin can stay imo. Miss Kiki, I thought she was a great character and Dominic too!

I have watched General Hospital since pre Luke and Laura days. It would be a shame to discontinue such a history of life like characters we have identified with for so long!! Please do not cancel this series!

I have watched since 1974 as well and still love GH! As the comments reflect, while some hate certain storylines, others will love the same storylines. I love the history of the old characters and given a little time have come to love all the new characters. Please don’t take it off the air!

GH is lacking something? Oh that is right, they need a villain not afraid of the name Sonny Corinthos, put a bullet in him after he slowly watches his fake friend serial killer Jason Morgan (who has killed more than Ryan Chamberlain) die a slow and painful death, and also why not throw in a bullet for big mouth Carly, GH than would be watchable again.

I love General Hospital please don’t Cancel this soap opera. It does have a lot of advertisement, we need more stories than than dead ends. It’s horrible that when there’s breaking news it’s in ABC, no matter if it was at 1:30! The abc show was moved at 3:00 pm, we still get the short end of the story. We never get to see General Hospital and Fans aren’t being considered!

I know it will be a very sad day once GH is actually canceled because it will be like the end of an era. It is truly one of the great classic soap operas but the show hasn’t been good at all for quite some time. So sick of the long drawn out storylines that I could actually scream. I mean it is like watching paint dry! It really is that bad. So maybe it would be better if it were just canceled.

I have been watching General Hospital for over 20 years now. Lately it has been so confusing. For starters Ava…OMG! Am I the only one that is sick of her? Ava has been getting away with so much and no consequences. Everyone has paid their dues except Ava. She was terribly burned…not a good enough lesson. The needs to finally pay. I am so on the verge of giving up with GH. The Ava thing, the Ryan thing..this DA that’s bothering Sonny…All of it. Its seriously time for a new plot that doesn’t take 6 months to be figured out.

Ava certainly has paid for her sins. She went to jail for shooting Connie, lost custody of Avery, has Sonny & Carly always giving her a hard time, lost Griffin to her daughter, and now she’s dating a psychopath who will kill her daughter. I think Ava has certainly suffered.

Oh please Sonny and Jason has done way worst than Ava but yet they still walk around as like their the cops, you Ava haters hate only just because she is against your precious Sonny and Carly, if she was against Olivia you wouldnt hate her. No one is allowed to be against Sonny and Carly, look at Nelle for an example, she was hated for being against Carly. Sonny and Carly are hypocrites, all they did is whine Nelle killed Zach Grant a character never seen and no one cared about. Plus GH would be stupid to get rid… Read more »

ABC should have never fired Ron Carlivatti. The show was the best it had been in years under him. I finally stopped watching about 2 years ago. I can’t even hope to see them re hire Ron as Days has already snapped him up. What a bad decision to ever release him. The show was so much fun to watch under RC–funny, interesting, cute, compelling, dramatic. Now it’s back to the Carly and Jason show… snore.

They fired him because the ratings were tanking under him. Refer to this article: https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2015/07/the-numbers-that-got-carlivati-fired-as-ghs-head-writer

They fired him because ratings tanked under his tenure. Google “Ron Carlivati General Hospital ratings storylines” and you’ll see for yourself.

GH has less ratings now than they did when Ron was writing, GH at one point had over 3 million viewers, now they seem to be around 2.3 million viewers, GH never went that low under Ron, so why are the current team not be fired?

Ratings for ALL 4 soaps have dropped in the past few years, or don’t you know how to read the ratings on the very site that you are posting this comment? The fact is that ratings dropped significantly under Ron, which is to say they have dropped under every head writer in the past 20 years but more so when Ron was writing. Check out the yearly ratings for the soaps if you need evidence.
