To no surprise, The CW has cancelled their remake of Melrose Place after just one season and 18 episodes.
The new Melrose Place revolves around the same apartment complex as the 1990s original but largely focuses on a new group of characters. The cast includes Katie Cassidy, Stephanie Jacobsen, Jessica Lucas, Michael Rady, Shaun Sipos, Colin Egglesfield, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, Nicholas Gonzalez, Victor Webster, and Brooke Burns. Appearances by actors Thomas Calabro, Laura Leighton, Heather Locklear, Josie Bissett, and Daphne Zuniga help kept ties to the original alive.
In September, despite a lot of promotion, the first episode attracted a small 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.31 million viewers. The numbers fell after that and never came close to even matching the premiere’s. The April 4th episode hit a season low, with a horrific 0.4 rating in the demographic and only .86 million viewers.
Even for The CW, the new Melrose Place’s ratings were absolutely terrible. Though the last episode of the season left many storylines up in the air, there was no way that it was going to be coming back.
Well, the network made it official this week. Melrose Place has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two.
What do you think? Why didn’t this version catch on? Was it a bad idea from the start? Would it have survived if Heather Locklear signed on at the beginning or was including original characters part of why it failed?

I am completely upset behind this. I LOVED Melrose Place. It had me on the edge of my seat week after week. I just dont understand why it didnt catch on. That crappy 90210 is coming back….! Why didnt they cancel that?????
Nikita BETTER BE THE BOMB or the CW will get the boot!
In my opinion, Melrose place is a great series. Is not like some series that we see who have teenagers and the problems that we all know. isn’t so ”cliché”, and that’s cool.
I think, maybe, the schedule of Melrose place wasn’t the best. I’m not from USA, but I see Melrose place on a portuguese channel who bought the show. The cast is good to. Good actors, and characters. I think is a lot better than de 90’s MP.
I’m a little bit sad, ’cause that series is so popular here. but I see that it’s not on America.
There are many reasons why this show got cancelled. First off, the CW’s target audience is teenagers and early twenties. The original 90210 was geared to this age group, while the original Melrose Place was geared to and mainly drew an audience of late twenties and thirties. It is my guess based on what i have read online that a lot of the people who tuned in to the CW version were people who watched the original. The original is a lot to live up to and the new incarnation just didn’t. It was no different than any of the… Read more »
I agree with everything you wrote.
I did not think this new melrose would last. I was only a fan of the old one. I also noticed that every other week you could not find the show. It was almost like 90210 but they finally became better after they stop disappearing from the original time slot and became consistent in coming on every week. If you are going to have the same time of shoe you have to be better than the orginal……
I just was looking at the new Sept season to begin and start setting my my dvr to record my favorite shows and just found out about Melrose Pace being canceled.
I loved the original actually really liked the new one as well and am shocked it didn’t catch on. I loved the new cast and the storylines and am really going to miss this damn…
This is horrable! I have been looking forward to the new season and came accross this! If there was a real reason, it was cause it is not on a major network like fox! If this show had run the same episodes on Fox, then it would have made it. The story lines were great and had a more hip, to todays ways rather than going with the same original that most shows try to resorect. The producer should have tried to sell this to FOX and this show would have made it. Not that the CW is bad, but… Read more »
I was looking forward to Melrose Place to start back up this sucks!!
I am VERY sad to find out that there is not a second season for melrose place. I have been waiting since the finale for the new season to begin. I watched the show every week and even got my boyfriend to like it. This is depressing.
I really liked this show. Im so sick of these networks cancelling all these good shows, the replacing them with stupid ones.
i am so upset they are not doing a season 2! WHY THE HECK NOT?!
I can’t believe this happened! I loooooved the remake! I loved the original and watched it religiously so when I heard of a remake I was so excited. I think that if the network found ratings not where they would have liked, they should have put it another time slot or another day (as was said previously). Some people do have busy lives and do not have the luxury of a PVR! I am really saddened bu the fact this this great show will not be returning.
I am SO sad – I love the new Melrose – I was a huge fan of the original too. Please, please bring it back!
i was looking for the day season 2 began and came across this horrible news =( i love love LOVE this show i can’t believe they cancelled it. i have been waiting to see more since the finale! I agree they need to keep it going!
I personally, really liked the show. I can’t believe all of the shows that are being cancelled. I think that this should be rethought. Give the show a chance!
I am so Heartbroken by this news…..Melrose Place is the only reason why i even began watching TV again….How dare CW take it off the air…W/o any warning!!! I live for that show…Like a fool i spent the whole damn summer looking for it and confused as to why i couldnt find it..just to find out the unthinkable has happened!! But WHY????? Maybe the time should have been different but dont cancel it!!!! Put on Mondays or put it before 90210!!! But u just cant get rid of it…That show had so many twist and turns what are we fans… Read more »
I agree! I loved the new cast in the old complex. I have been waiting all summer for the show to return. The show was realistic and resembles actual life in L.A. as a mid 20 to 30 year old trying to make something of what your passions in life are. Whether it was a chef a film producer/director an up-n-coming business entrepreneur or a school teacher it all worked well together coupled with the realities of falling in and out of love and finding yourself. I was actually shocked to see Heather return back to the show and basically… Read more »
