canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Perception: TV Show Cancelled by TNT, No Season Four

by Trevor Kimball, November 13, 2014

Perception TV show on TNT canceledThe axe keeps flying over at TNT. The cable channel already cancelled Dallas and Franklin & Bash and now, they’ve cancelled Perception as well. There won’t be a fourth season.

Perception follows Doctor Daniel Pierce (Eric McCormack), a talented and schizophrenic neuropsychiatrist, as he assists his former student, FBI Special Agent Kate Moretti (Rachael Leigh Cook), solve complex cases. Other castmembers include Kelly Rowan, Arjay Smith, LeVar Burton, and Scott Wolf.

The show is currently in its third season. Ten of the season’s 15 episodes have aired so far and have averaged 2.78 million viewers with a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That’s down about 10% when compared to season two.

While Perception certainly isn’t TNT’s biggest series, it’s been a respectable performer. It seems that the cancellation is at least in part due to the cable channel’s desire to move towards airing edgier series.

It’s worth noting that Legends, a show sited as being more “edgy”, drew only 1.53 million viewers and has yet to be cancelled or renewed.

The final five episodes of Perception will being airing on February 17, 2015. It’s unclear if they will give viewers any kind closure to the series.

ABC Studios produces Perception so there’s a chance that they might try to find another home for the series. There will be 39 episodes at the end of season three — a far cry from the typical 88 episode minimum needed for a syndication package.

What do you think? Do you like the Perception TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled, or renewed for a fourth season? Would you watch it on another channel?

Well in this case I agree with it being cancelled. Never kept my interest and I’m part of the “older” demo it should have appealed to but didn’t. I just hope TNT does better with it’s next set of new offerings. I don’t like Legends, Murder In The First, or The Transporter. It’s becoming slim pickings on TNT. Might be down to Major Crimes. Even starting to lose interest in Rizzoli and Isles, the whole Jane being pregnant was a big yawn, plus not sure why they haven’t announced it’s fate yet as it’s one of TNT’s top 2 shows.… Read more »

Learning that in this age of television, where there are so many reality shows: Housewives of here and there, Dance Moms, Big Brother, and other ridiculous, economic, programming is on the airwaves. A show of merit, great writing, excellent storyline, wonderful performance by McCormick is cancelled?? What brought on this decision? I am both baffled and disappointed. A quality show, is dropped simply because it had an off season? Does anyone concern themselves with the responsibility of what is delivered in this program; exposing that one individual whom is not “normal” can be functional. Opening eyes of the ignorant. Reconsider!!… Read more »

Perception is my favorite show. The combination of intellect, humor, treatment of mental health issues and great writing/acting captured me from the start. It may sound dramatic to say I am devastated, but that description is accurate. I really didn’t think with the numbers that Perception had that it would be canceled. It was consistently in TNT’s top 5. I wish there was a way to get back at TNT, but they don’t care about our rants. All we can do is stop watching the channel. The only show I still like is Rizzoli & Isles. I will miss it,… Read more »

Does anyone ever tested democratic fix 49 to 17-year-olds that maybe that’s the key thing they should be focusing on yes I’m a little older but let’s face it like others posted the younger crowds busy on their iPhones and iPads and computers and video games and not even really watching good TV I agree with others every time I find a decent show I’d really like to three saying seasons they cancel it it’s ridiculous someone should reconsider the rating system and start checking on the people that are home those nights at that time watching television and see… Read more »

It’s not that difficult. Those of us who are above the demo aren’t considered high volume buyers. We have accumulated a lot already so we don’t get impressed by commercials. That’s the only thing that matters…not how much some people enjoy a show. The people involved with the show like those numbers, but low loyal numbers just doesn’t sell

The networks and advertisers take the “older” viewers for granted. They figure that demo will watch TV no matter what so ad rates for shows watched by the older viewers are a lot less. They all consider the “younger” demo harder to get since as you say they watch via iPads, iPhones, on demand, etc. and a lot of that viewing is ad free so they are more coveted and therefore anything that appeals to them commands a higher ad rate making more revenue for the network. The whole system where TV revenue is based on ad rates is becoming… Read more »

It is one of TNT’s better shows, but TNT has not produced a quality show
since they cancelled Leverage.

Total betrayal! I do not know what age group TNT is relying upon to decide which shows will go and which will stay, but this cancellation is utter NONSENSE. Did it ever occur to the brains running TNT that the younger crowd is too busy on their iphones and tablets to be bothered watching actual TV? Perception is one of the best shows on TNT … cancelling it is a nasty slap in the face to We the Insignificant Viewers, without whom TNT apparently has forgotten that the channel would land in the dust bin of history.

Jane, I have posted many times of my displeasure over the cancellation of Perception. This will be my last, as nothing we say makes any difference to network no-nothing’s. One of the best written, directed and acted shows in 30 yrs. you must realize the network has to make room for the Kardashians, turtle man, sweat boys and other insane dribble!

I’m so tired of the good shows getting cancelled and the crap staying on the air. I’m with Kathy, I wish we could vote. I’m getting to where I don’t even want to watch tv for fear of all the decent shows going away. It’s really frustrating.

This makes me sad, I really enjoyed this show. I did watch Legend and stopped watching it after 3 or 4 episodes. I will miss this show 🙁

It was generally entertaining, but a bit campy and has pretty much played out to the point of making changes or get switched off for being too much of the same old bag of tricks. You can only keep dog and pony tricks interesting so long before people move on. Much of this show was just that. Interesting concept for a while, but now what? They haven’t seemed to figure that one out….Too bad. Was fun while it lasted

Network decision makers are analogous to Wacky Baracky systematically destroying America, only with them, it’s their own network! Enough already with the moronic reality shows that only appeal to those with an I Q below 16. Is George Soros behind a conspiracy to rid the U.S.A. Of anything cerebral?
