Smallville: Tom Welling Series Renewed for Season 10

by Trevor Kimball, March 4, 2010

SmallvilleFans of the young man from Kansas and Krypton can rest easy. The CW TV series Smallville has been renewed for a 10th season.

Smallville follows the exploits of young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) in his days prior to slipping on blue tights and red shorts. The current cast includes Welling, Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.

The series moved to Friday nights this season and, while viewership is understandably down, it’s improved the CW network’s performance on that little-watched night.

According to the network, Smallville has increased the averages by 67% among adults 18-34 (1.5 rating), 200% in men 18-34 (1.8 rating), 75% in adults 18-49 (1.4 rating), 183% in men 18-49 (1.7 rating) and 74% in total viewers (3.12 million).

Are you glad that Smallville's been renewed?

Though the show’s strong suit isn’t the CW network’s targeted demographic of young women, the renewal was expected — especially in light of the rest of the network’s schedule. There’s no word yet if season 10 will be the show’s last.

Smallville joins previously renewed The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatural, and America’s Next Top Model.

The CW shows whose fate are still up in the air are One Tree Hill, Melrose Place, and Life Unexpected. Of the three, One Tree Hill seems to have the best chance for survival. Life Unexpected started decently but has been dropping. Meanwhile, Melrose Place is considered to be essentially dead.

What do you think? Are you glad that Smallville is returning or is it time for the series to end?

I think its brilliant that smallville has been renewed it has gone from strength to strength and i hope it can keep going why cancel a show which is doin so well the only way it will fall if they dont get lex back michal rosenbaum needs to take a good look in the mirror and ask himself who gave him the chance to become such a famous face on television. They need to bring some-one else in to the show that can be lex i really hope that they do because to leave the clark and lex story behind… Read more »

I’m glad that it was renewed, I like the show and have watched it from the start. However, this season hasn’t been that great, it has taken a decidedly dark turn. I don’t like the character development they have taken with Chloe. Her character went too dark too fast, and Alison Mack is such a cutie. I know a lot of people liked Lana, but I was glad to see her go. I know that the T.V. show needs it’s own life, but they need to try to at least “loosely” stick to the comic storyline, and Lex needs to… Read more »

We’re so thrilled that Smallville will be back for season 10! It’s a great show and we watch it as a family whenever it’s on. We spread the word to everyone that they should watch Smallville (and Supernatural) if they don’t already.

@Jim,
Actually, no plot hole there. Jor-El said that he put blue kryptonite into the clones in order to suppress Zod from acquiring powers from the yellow sun. Now, the plot hole that may be there is how the blue kryptonite got there in the first place.

I HATE THE ONE TREE HILL IS CANCELLED AS WELL AS LIFE UNEXPECTEDLY. THE ONLY REASON ONE TREE HILL IS LEAVING BECAUSE LUCAS AND PEYTON ARE GONE, JUST LIKE THE OC, WHEN THAT GIRL WAS KILLED OFF THE SHOW WAS CANCELED. IT BITES!

WOW!!! I am so glad Smallville is coming back for another season…love Tom Welling & Justin Hartley. Have been an avid viewer since Season 1 and I don’t fit into the normal age group of viewers (I’m 60+) but I LOVE SMALLVILLE!!!!

i’m glad it got renewed as well. although it’s getting to be kind of ridiculous about his inability to fly.

zod has his power for a few hours and immediately knows how to fly!!!!

and the show has a major plot-hole. when we saw the future with the red sky and how clark lost his power but zod and the rest didn’t…..was i the only one thinking that lana’s abilities might have come in handy???

I’ve been waiting for this show’s cancellation for at least the past four seasons (give or take one or two). Honestly, at this point, I’m bowled over at how it has managed to keep itself from getting the axe (not that I consider it bad, but it hasn’t had any kind of consistent quality in recent years).

Even though I dread the thought, hopefully it doesn’t end up becoming the CW’s equivalent to NBC’s ER. Ten is a good stopping point, IMO.

Wow I can’t believe it has been renewed. I was afraid that the move to Friday’s was the end of Smallville. I am glad it’s been renewed.

I’m going to go on a ledge and say that melrose, tree hill, and unexpected are all going to get canceled. the series has a lot of shows in the works, so i think they’ll cancel all three to air the new ones.
