Lucasfilm has announced that Star Wars: The Clone Wars is coming to an end after five seasons. Though new episodes aren’t being produced for Cartoon Network, new content is still being written and will be released at some point.
In addition, Star Wars Detours, the new series that was announced last year, has been postponed as a result of plans for the new trilogy of movies.
A NEW DIRECTION FOR LUCASFILM ANIMATION
March 11, 2013
As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come.
As part of this shift, we have also made some key decisions affecting Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Detours.
After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series. While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we’re continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content. In the video below, Supervising Director Dave Filoni offers a peek of what is to come in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
At Star Wars Celebration VI last year, George Lucas gave fans a glimpse at the animated comedy series Star Wars Detours from Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, and Todd Grimes. Detours was conceived and produced before we decided to move forward with the new Star Wars trilogy, and in the wake of that decision, Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense. As a result, we’ve decided to postpone the release of Detours until a later date.
We are incredibly proud of the teams at Lucasfilm Animation for creating some of the most amazing animation ever produced for TV. Keep checking StarWars.com for new developments on these and future projects.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Clone Wars is ending? Are you surprised, in light of all the news about the new movies? Do you think Detours will ever be made?
Folks, I too will miss Clone Wars. As will my teenage children. It was well done and quite interesting. HOWEVER, keep in mind that we already know how most of the stories will end! Watch Episode 3! The Clone Wars was supposed to cover the three years between “Attack Of The Clones” and “Revenge Of The Sith”. After five seasons, we must be getting pretty close to the end of that period. What’s left to do… well, we have to mess with Anakin’s head some more, as he is much TOO well balanced in Clone Wars to turn into the… Read more »
Clone Wars was the last true STAR WARS saga we’ll ever see, and at its best it was every bit as good as the movies. Filoni did a terrific job and deserved a shot with the Disney regime, but they seem determined to revamp everything.
My only, selfish hope is that the (presumable) webisodes to come will give more closure to the story of Ahsoka Tano, a great character who needs a real place in the canon.
Oooh! Maybe Episode 7 will feature an elderly, former Jedi that spent the last thirty or forty years meditating on some remote rim-world? The return of Master Tano!
I agree. 🙂
I’m surprised it lasted that long, I mean a cartoon? It seemed a lot better on paper, than them actually doing it. And, they really don’t need to do the 3-d thing at all. I mean, it’s a little cool, but it’s not worth the money.
The Clone Wars is an awesome show buddy. Worth every penny. What’s your problem?
First its not a cartoon, it is an animated show which is the only way they could make it a worthwhile tv series. N nowadays animated shows have better plots n scripts than any big budget films.
And they usually have much better voice actors.
They were very specific in saying they wouldn’t be animating anymore episodes for Cartoon Network. Obviously the series will move over to Disney whenever they get around to creating more episodes. No way is Clone Wars over and done with.
i never missed one episode of the clone wars and im 13 lol i enjoyed the series so much i remember when the series came out! going to miss the show! : (
I’m sorry to hear about its cancellation after the 5th season. Does that mean it’s the very final season and there will be no Season 6 on Disney XD? 🙁 At the end, recently, I’ve been so angry and hurt when Ahsoka Tano decided to get outta the Temple which hurt the Council’s feelings. That’s not like her. I dunno what’s wrong with that woman all of a sudden. Well, I guess her fate will be her sudden death by homicide or suicide, or turn to evil, or marriage to Lux Bonteri, or whatever? 🙁 I sure hope the heck… Read more »
My 16-year-old daughter will be very sad to hear this! She loves the Clone Wars.
