David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are returning to television as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. FOX has announced that The X-Files will return for a six episode “event series.” Production will begin this summer.

Thirteen years after the original series run, FOX has ordered the next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES, a thrilling, six-episode event series which will be helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-inhabiting their roles as iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history.
The announcement was made today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group and Chris Carter, creator and executive producer of THE X-FILES. Production on THE X-FILES event series is set to begin in summer 2015. Further details remain under wraps and will be announced at a later date.
“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as THE X-FILES, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”
THE X-FILES originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.
Produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Ten Thirteen Productions, THE X-FILES is created and executive-produced by Chris Carter.

I don’t understand why they are only going to make six episodes for the next season. I really think they should make a full season. All of their old seasons had 24 episodes in them, but none of the shows do over 10 episodes anymore. So I think they should do at least 10 seasons!!! I love the X-Files!!

They did mention their son William several times. I think eventually they will find him and we will get to see him.
What is their plan, to JUST do this six episode run and then……..? I’m pretty certain it will be extremely popular. Will we have to wait another year for a paltry 6 more episode/. How about a full season pick-up? I can’t wait!

I don’t know why they ever cancelled the X-Files when they did years ago! I loved the show. I am sorry that they are only coming back with 6 episodes.

Amazing news is love the episodes to self contained rather than arc episodes they make for better viewing years after the fact, I can’t watch many arc episode re-runs of my favourite show DS9, XFiles, B5 but I revist single self contained episodes all the time. Love it if hey bought back Glen Morgan and James Wong and Darin Morgan to help out with the writing here and the old writing team Vince Gilligan, get some of the old directors back too Thomas J Wright and David Nutter, now we need to get a Millennium event series with Lance Henrikson.… Read more »
