canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Smallville: Cancelled or Just Ending? Either Way, No Season 11

by Trevor Kimball, May 20, 2010

Smallville canceled or endingFor years, some people have been asking, “When is Smallville going to end? Isn’t he Superman yet?” Well, the series ending is now in sight. But who’s decision was it?

When Smallville began, it revolved around Clark Kent (Tom Welling), a high school student who was discovering his super powers. As time has gone on, he’s learned how to use his abilities and is now balancing his heroics with his work at the Daily Plant newspaper. The show’s current cast includes Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.

Last season, The CW network moved Smallville from its usual Thursday night timeslot to Fridays. The ratings understandably dropped quite a bit but the network still renewed the show for a 10th season. The renewal had supposedly been hinging on whether or not Welling wanted to keep doing the series.

The decision has now been made that season 10 will be the show’s last. The network was supposed to make an official announcement at the upfronts but Welling jumped the gun and told HollywoodLife at an event on Tuesday night. The actor also reflected on what he’s learned by playing Clark Kent for so long. He said, “Once you think you have perfected things, you’ve got to keep practicing. There is always something to learn! It works for me and it will work for others.”

Should Smallville be ending?

It remains to be seen who made the decision to end the show. Did the network decide to cancel it or was the choice made on the production side? Unless Welling (who’s now 33-years-old) decided that he’d had enough, it likely comes down to a mixture of the two and simple economics. The show will have been around for 10 seasons, has gotten more expensive to produce, and doesn’t bring as much ad revenue anymore.

On top of that, there are certainly more than enough episodes to keep the show running in syndication for a long time. By the end of the show’s run, there will be enough installments for a station to play once a day for seven months without repeating.

By announcing the ending a year in advance, the network can promote Smallville’s season 10 as the last and the producers will have ample time to plan how they want to wrap things up.

What do you think? Are you glad that Smallville’s coming to an end or should it keep going? Anything you’d like to see happen? Perhaps Lex Luthor’s return?

I’ve watched most of the Smallville episodes, and hardly anything else on the CW (which I still think stands for Country Western). Maybe it’s about time for it to end, but I’ll miss it.

I love Erica Durance too.

After Smallville ends, I’ll remove WUCW (my local CW affiliate) from my channel lineup.

I’m somewhat tired of “Smallville” and Clark Kent in general (although I enjoyed the season finale)…I think it’s time for “Metropolis”and Superman.

I love this show I look forward to watching every Friday night. Now, there is some boring who wants to be a model or something. Smallville alwaays kept you in suspence, and it is the show only show I watch, besides Two and a Half Men.

Okay- i’ve watched every episode loyally- but it’s time for this show to die. It evolves each season but it’s time for it to end. They’ve killed off or written out (SPOILER ALERT) Lex Luthor, Braniac, Metallo, Lionel Luther, Lana Lang, Bizzaro, Clark’s dad, Clark’s mom, Shelby (Clark’s dog- aka Krypto the superdog), Aquaman, Bart Allen (aka the Flash), Toyman, Zod, Clark’s biological cousin- aka Supergirl, Davis Bloome aka Doomsday (the only vilian who can actually kill superman), Jimmy Olsen, Jor-el (Clark’s real dad), and many more. A few characters they’ve brought back for an episode or two. They’ve killed… Read more »

I don’t want Smallville to end…but if it does, I want to see tom Welling don the red cape and that he marries Lois (Erica Durance). I support the idea of a justice League spin-off. I hope Tom plays Superman in big screen because he is awesome, sexy and gorgeous, angel-faced. If ever Lana comes back to Smallville in Season 10 – be it that she opens her eyes that Lois and Clark are the truly destined for each other.

I loved smallville and do not want Smallville to end. I would love for them to have Lois and Clark to get married also. I would love to see Lana Lane to return also.

Smallville has been an enjoyable experience. Superman purists probably hate(d) this show, but from the very beginning the producers have said that Smallville was a reimagining of the Superman lore. Also, if anyone watches the original Superman movie, Clark doesn’t “become” Superman until he’s approximately 30 yrs old. Ten seasons is a respectable amount of time for a good show like this to be on air. I will be sad when the series finale airs next year, but I will remember all of the joy and happiness that Smallville has brought me over the years. As we say in the… Read more »

Four word “OUT OF THIS WORLD” show God I just love smallville, after waiting for a long 8 years for smallville to come so awesome for season 9. I just love it so much. Now I am all depressed and sad and no more waiting for smallville on Friday. Please someone, someone out there tell me when the season 10 going to start. I just cannot wait anymore. Also anyone, who was the women in hospital outside tests room, maybe checkmate women or some other government operative or maybe LEX LUTHOR sidekick.

I think the show shouldn’t have gone to season nine, let alone go to season 10. it was a show about PRE-METROPOLIS and DP pahse and it should have remained as such, especially that it introduced a NEW idea and ANGLE to discuss one part of the comics… it even brought a lot of viewers at the time and would have ended the show with more decency rather than seeing how they are tarnishing everything that happened before the season nine and ten! the show disgraced its main plot by the recent show ….. so I think it should get… Read more »

They need to bring Lex back. At least for the Final episode. The show is not as good without him.

I think Smallville has had an excellent run and season 10 looks like a good time to put it to bed. I would however support a spin-off, Justice League, Green Arrow – or Erica Durance as Wonder Woman!!

I sure hope the cast finds new projects soon, I don’t think I can go very long without an Erica Durance fix.

I think it’s about time they ended the show. Although I have been a loyal fan of the series since its beginning, there isn’t much left that one can expect from the show anymore. I mean they have already introduced (and mostly killed as well) all the major villains that Clark is supposed to face as Superman and although the brief vision of future events shown in the beginning of the finale did arouse a little interest to see the series going on till 2013, it’s hard to imagine what stories can be used to keep the viewers interested in… Read more »
