canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Dark Matter: Season One Ratings

Published: September 1, 2015

Dark Matter TV show on Syfy: ratings (cancel or renew?)TV shows that are based on comic books seem to be all the rage these days but they’ve found mixed success in the ratings. The Flash and Arrow are hits but Constantine was cancelled. How will the newest one, Dark Matter, perform for Syfy? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.

On Dark Matter, the crew of a derelict spaceship is awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. Facing threats at every turn, they have to work together to survive a voyage charged with vengeance, betrayal and hidden secrets. The show’s cast includes Marc Bendavid, Melissa O’Neil, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr, Jodelle Ferland, Roger Cross, and Zoie Palmer.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

9/1 update: Dark Matter has been renewed for a second season of 13 episodes. Details here.

Final season averages: 0.24 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.01 million total viewers.

Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.

How are your shows doing in the ratings? Check the current rankings:
A&E | ABC | AMC | Bravo | CBS | CMT | The CW | FOX | Freeform | FX | FXX
Hallmark | HBO | History | MTV | NBC | OWN | Showtime | Starz | Syfy | TBS
TNT | TV Land | USA Network | WGN America

What do you think? Do you like the Dark Matter TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?

Right about Ruby Rose raising the ratings for one week at least:) The only episode worth watching! It’ll get another season-Premium TV at it’s best! GEEZ!

I enjoy the twists in this show. The pace is not great I agree, but I think that will improve with time. As for acting. Lost Girl had terrible acting in it. Just because you were enthralled by the main character does not make it a thespian paradise.

True, but at least the acting in Lost Girl got somewhat better as the 1st season progressed. Then it leveled off for most of the actors on the show. The acting on DM is just plain awful & the writing’s worse. Good job Lost Girl writers! Way to go!

Why do you keep saying Lost Girl writers? Jay Firestone is credited with 1 Lost Girl episode. Joe Mallozzi and Paul Mullie who developed the Comic Book this is based on were Stargate writers. Joe and Paul came aboard Stargate in season 4 and stayed thru the end of Stargate Universe. Ten years if my math is correct. I do not see them being credited with any Lost Girl episodes. I get that a show you like was dropped. A lot of fans felt that Stargate Atlantis was sacrificed to get Stargate Universe. But there comes a time to move… Read more »

Dark Matter isn’t even owned or developed in any way by SyFy. It’s renewal isn’t even their decision. The show is produced by Space, out of Canada. SyFy is only paying Space to broadcast it in the US. Don’t let SyFy fool you into thinking this is their “original” programming, it’s not.

I suspect it will get renewed. Continuum (a similarly budgeted show out of Canada) has been around for 4 seasons, and it doesn’t get huge numbers either.

It should be renewed. Its a good storyline, good cast, but a bit flat. I think a second season will give them a chance to grow into one of the better SyFy shows to come along in a long time!
PS, love the Android!

I like this show. I agree it is a little slow just now but we’re only being introduced to the workings of one character per show. This has so much potential and no true sci-fi fan can complain about the acting. So many of our cult shows and movies contain horrendous acting but this isn’t one of them. Ok it needs a little polish, but hopefully this will come with time. I was a huge Firefly fan, literally cried when it ended and I agree this has the same feel and potential. I prefer my shows to build into something… Read more »

I cannot find one redeeming quality to the show Dark Matter. The writing is tedious & the endless exposition boring & unnecessary. The acting is surprisingly bad, & no chemistry between co-stars exists on-screen. I don’t know what the former writers & producers of Lost Girl are thinking? That’s just it. They’re not. Awful show, need to bring on the beautiful Ruby Rose to give it a lift, & that’s just a band aid. Cancel it.

Why so quick to judge a show that has so much potential, or are you even a fan of syfy/Space? I happen to find it riveting, it’s quite suspenseful and mysterious.

Seriously? Have you ever even read or watched “real syfy” or are you enthralled with this mediocre, predictable, run of the mill show. Why that idiot producer of Lost Girl ever decided to let that show slip away & begin this debacle is beyond all human comprehension. If she thought casting Palmer would be its saving grace, she was dead wrong!

So angry over a TV show… put down the remote and get outside, People are allowed to like this show. I for one love it. I agree that there is a mystery and suspense that is building to something great. Anyhoo. Chill out!

Dark matter is just as good as firefly and with beautiful singer Melissa oneil as the skipper of the ship makes the show even more fantastic. The show is character driven, which makes the show more universally attractive to non sci fi fans. Very original story line, and graphic novel background gives the show a big edge. Excellent cast too.
Bravo!!!

The story line is not original. It’s Stargate Universe all over again. A bunch of people trapped on a ship jumping into FTL every five minutes.

With all due respect, my words might get a bit heated, & I do apologize for that, & I do agree that everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, so I’m just expressing mine. I, & many other Lost Girl fans firmly believe it would have been renewed if Jay Firestone, Vanessa Piazza, & Zoie Palmer’s ego’s hadn’t inflated to the size of Mt, Everest thanks to the success of Lost Girl. So they venture off on their own, creating this “thing.” Rivalry is banal. This has to do with doing what was right for the show & for the fans.… Read more »

Lost Girl is all but gone. These last upcoming 8 episodes will quickly end for good. I was stressing the way it was done & why it was done? . Many have a real issue with that! If DM or ZP fans don’t like it, too freakin’ bad. There would be no DM, & ZP would be doing cat food commercials if it wasn’t for Anna Silk & LG so you CHILL OUT!

Are you a team Dyson fan then? You can hate a character in a series, that is your perogative, but to attack an actor on a show because the script hasn’t gone the way you want it to is rather sad. I love DM, we haven’t had a fun sci-fi series in years. More power to them as far as I am concerned, I can’t take emo all the damn time. As for the writing, I think it is one of the better series out there, far better than LG has ever been. As for the acting, it is a… Read more »

I’m not team anyone. I’ve never been what people call a “shipper.” It ruins shows. You are correct on both counts. I have a huge problem with the writing, & I cannot tolerate that smug, narcissistic ZP. Loved her character on LG. Think she is fabulous as Lauren, but I don’t believe she belongs with Bo.As for her acting & overall performance on DM, I’ve only been able to gag my way through 3 episodes. She looks anorexic- eat a burger will ya! And what’s up with that 3 yr old voice that makes me what to puncture my eardrums!… Read more »

It’s ok to not be a fan of someone’s acting, but please get your facts straight if you are going to attack an actor- ZP has been working consistently in the Canadian TV and independent film industry since she started acting (pretty much without a break). If you watch interviews of her, she consistently deflects praise to everyone else and accepts very little of it for herself. It honestly sounds like a lot of your criticism is toward the producers, and that’s fine, I have criticisms toward Prodigy myself (they cut needless costs such as insisting on yellow tinted lighting… Read more »

She’s really only been around professionally since 2002. !3 yrs isn’t that long, & her list of credits not that impressive. The Guard was terrible, Sex Without Kids was funny as hell! I loved her in that, but I truly find her talent limited not that any of them are going to win an Oscar. Cold Blooded & Patch Town were God awful. Don’t even get me going on Instant Star! My girlfriend made me sit through them. Huge ZP fan! Oh yeah. Like I told her, agree to disagree.

Given the creators, I was hoping for something with the quality of Stargate. Unfortunately, the show so far is just another photo shoot for the actors who are all far too young and pretty. Mediocre acting, 1D characters, and a setup created from a random story generator makes this show difficult to not cringe though and quickly forgettable.

Bring back Stargate Universe!!!

Where you say “Baddass” you mean, generic criminals who turn out not really to be criminals? This show was terrible, it looked and felt like a poor sci fi from 20 years ago. So generic and predictable it was easy to guess the arch-type characters just from the poster shot. The loveable leader, kinda hearted and charismatic The badass no nonsense second in command polar opposite of the leader and sexual tension generator The silent combat expert, predictably asian guy is a space ninja The quirky off centre girl for the nerds, probably some kind of spooky telepathy to explain… Read more »

All that you wrote is so articulately written, and you’ve covered all that’s so horribly wrong with that show. It’s a terrible shame that some writers and producers from Lost Girl felt that Dark Matter was a a better bet, instead of sticking it out and giving Lost Girl the finale it deserves instead of this split season debacle. Thank you for your comment.

Well, thank you! It’s nice to see that I’m not alone in my point of view. Lost Girl was cast aside for the sole purpose of promoting Dark Matter & that was a terrible error in judgement on the part of a certain LG producer & former co-star now appearing on SYFY. Lost Girl fans surely deserved more than we are getting than this ridiculous split season, & Anna Silk, the true & humble star should have been given the opportunity to give her character the proper send off. Take care 🙂

Lost Girl was not a well written show after Season 3 Lost Girl finished because of the loss of viewers not because of Dark Matter. I have stayed with Lost Girl for every season but the back end of Season 3 was the turning point for a lot of fans and season 4 was a total disaster. I agree Anna Silk is the very gracious star of the show it is a shame the producers forgot this with their incessant promotion of Rachel Skarsten. The character of Bo was destroyed in Season 4 by the writers and so far it… Read more »

For the bashers out there whining about how “generic” and predictable the characters were from onset in the first few episodes, have you even stopped to ask yourself if maybe the writers did this for a reason? Human beings are complex beings that often try to be perceived a certain way to others each for their own various reasons, it isn’t until we gain trust and camaraderie with those closest to us (i.e. family, friends, remotes) that we start to reveal our inner selves and start to see it in others as well. That’s what DM IS TRYING TO ACCOMPLH… Read more »

I find the interactions interesting. In light of how clearly capable of defending themselves 2 and the android are, the ship was not left undefended — devil take custody of any foolish interloper who thought otherwise. I also feel that 2 is the real leader, and the first episode was done right — control is to be taken when no one has it to start with. That 2 is a woman was not a requirement of the role to me. It is rather a strong characteristic of that character. Interesting environments make for action out of our commonplace. BBut the… Read more »
