What’s in store for The Exorcist? Recently, executive producer Jeremy Slater spoke with Deadline about the season one finale and a possible second season of the FOX TV series.
Based on the 1973 film, the horror drama follows two priests who must work together to tackle a horrifying case of demonic possession. The cast includes Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Kurt Egyiawan, Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, Brianne Howey, and Hannah Kasulka.
Season one of The Exorcist ended last week, and series creator Slater told Deadline he planned for the finale to be closed-ended:
I knew going into the show, before our first show ever debuted, I knew that I didn’t want to end the season on a cliffhanger, if that answers your question? Because I’m personally not a fan of cliffhangers in serialized storytelling, I feel it cheats the audience and it’s a last way to create suspense. My goal was then that this first season needed to tell a story with a beginning, a middle and an end and that story was the possession of the Rance family. So by the conclusion of this episode, you will get a satisfying ending to that story, as was my plan.”
Slater then mentioned that he already has ideas for a second season:
I definitely know where I want to go in Season 2 and what characters I want to take with me. I have a lot of plans, but one lesson that I learned in the course of this season is that it’s great to have big ideas but you have to also have the flexibility to pivot on a dime. I probably had the first half of this season planned out in my mind before we started shooting, but we had no idea what the back half of the season was or how we were going to wrap things up. That was a process of discovery of trusting the writers’ room, trusting the writers, it’s the most gratifying part of a television process for me. I have a 1000 ideas for another season of The Exorcist but I’ve learned to keep my options open so we can really craft it.”
But will The Exorcist be renewed? Slater says he doesn’t know yet, but he hopes there will be more:
I don’t know if this is the end of The Exorcist story, I definitely hope it’s not because I love these characters and this world and I have a lot more story to tell. But if this is all we get, then I feel we went out swinging and on a real high note.”
So far, FOX has not announced whether The Exorcist is renewed or not.
What do you think? Did you watch season one of The Exorcist? Do you want a second season?
Loved this show! Would definitely watch Season 2
I loved the show !!! I would absolutely love for the show to continue. Please bring it back !!! The actors rocked an I looked forward to it every week !!!
fantastic show! The storyline was so compelling, wonderful actors. As a huge fan of the original exorcist, and the horror genre in general it would be a shame to lose this show!
Please make a season 2. This show is fantastic, the acting is great & after season 2, I want a season 3 & 4.
Would LOVE A SEASON 2!!!
Please give us a Season Two.
Definitely needs a second season and better promotion. The Exorcist is edgy, exciting, and down right hard to ignore after watching an episode! Come on FOX and get to promoting!
I was 14 when the movie hit the theaters in ’73. I’ve been hooked to the whole storyline ever since. The music has the original “Tubular Bells” sound (Mike Oldfield) and bringing Reagan McNeil back as a main character carried the 40-yr-old story into the 21st century. This show should definitely be renewed, and Linda Blair should play some role in the next season. Get the show off Friday nights too! It received a huge market share for the premiere, but lets be realistic here. People will (and did) change their plans to watch the first episode, but weren’t willing… Read more »
I sure hope it is renewed and would definitely watch
I hope to God FOX renews this show for a second season. It was very scary and quite reminiscent of the movies. So many horror fans have no idea of what they have missed out on. I wish FOX had promoted it better. If it it does get canceled, one can only hope another network picks it up. Really top rated acting and scares.
FOX is literally the worst managed network in television… ‘The Exorcist’ should’ve never been slated for Friday’s… A night they used to burn off and kill ‘Second Chance’ just last season. And let’s be honest, I enjoyed Second Chance but it certainly doesn’t even come close to holding a candle to the favorable acting, slick production values, and top notch writing of The Exorcist.
Renew on FX. More scares, more plot, more more and more.
Also, Friday is date night, not many people to watch.
Love it.
JUST WHAT WE NEEDED!!!A SCARY SHOW INSTEAD OF THE SAME OLD THINGS.ALL THE GREAT SHOWS THEY LOOK TO TAKE OFF THE AIR.THIS IS ONE SHOW THAT WE LOOKED FORWARD TO ON FRIDAYS!!!!!!PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THE SHOW.
Love the show I think we deserve a second season. I really want to know what happens next. The hole cast was great they did a really good. I love the movies I have watched them and read the book too. So I’m begging don’t cancel the show.
Great show. Really caught the horror of the movie and more importantly, the book. Characters were genuine and the fear was real. FOX, here is what the fans of the Exorcist thoughts are on renewal, The Power of the Fans compels you, The Power of the Fans compels you….
