canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Major Crimes: Ending; No Season Seven for TNT TV Show

by Trevor Kimball, October 3, 2017

Major Crimes TV show on TNT: ending, no season 7When The Closer TV show ended in 2012, fans of the Kyra Sedgwick crime drama could take some solace knowing that many of the characters would stick around via the Major Crimes spin-off. Soon, it will be time to say goodbye to that series as well.

TNT has announced that a seventh season renewal won’t be coming for Major Crimes. The sixth and final season will kick off on Halloween, October 31st, at 9pm (ET/PT). The two-episode series finale will air on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.

Here’s the press release from TNT:

TNT’s Hit Series Major Crimes Concludes with Sixth and Final Season Premiering on Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

Two-Episode Series Finale to air on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

Television’s beloved squad of detectives will tackle their three final cases when TNT’s hit drama Major Crimes returns for its sixth and final season on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). The series, a spin-off of the critically-acclaimed hit, The Closer, features a stellar ensemble cast headed by two-time Oscar® nominee Mary McDonnell. Also starring are G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Phillip P. Keene, Graham Patrick Martin, Kearran Giovanni, Jonathan Del Arco, Leonard Roberts, Jessica Meraz and Daniel di Tomasso. This season, the hugely popular crime drama marks its 100th episode milestone on Dec. 19 with the two-episode series finale airing on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).

“Major Crimes has successfully navigated the many challenges that arise with a spin-off; the primary mission of which is staying true to its core DNA while expanding into unique territory all its own,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT. “From Brenda Leigh Johnson to Commander Sharon Raydor, the cast and crew have done a phenomenal job of creating enduring characters – many of whom are celebrating 200 episodes together this season.”

This year, the series takes a serialized turn as the squad struggles to solve mysteries and murders surrounded by complex political conflicts, attempting to sidestep controversial issues as they track down three lethal murderers. As Cmdr. Sharon Raydor grows accustomed to her new boss, Assistant Chief Leo Mason, the detectives find themselves questioning their faith in the rapidly changing priorities of the justice system and their ability to reason through difficult changes. The emotionally gripping season will treat fans to an array of milestones from celebrations of love to periods of loss. Finally, they must accept the necessity of risk, in all its different guises, as they prepare to face the increasingly undeniable return of Phillip Stroh (guest star Billy Burke).

“The whole company of Major Crimes is dedicated to making 2017-18 the best season yet,” said series creator, James Duff. “We will finish our long run on TNT with a finale worthy of our loyal viewers and their years of unstinting support.”

Since its chart-topping debut in 2012, Major Crimes has consistently ranked as one of cable’s most-watched drama series. In its most recent season and spring run on TNT, the series reached an average 7.7M viewers per episode across linear, VOD, and digital platforms.

In addition to the main cast, Major Crimes features recurring appearances by Jon Tenney as Deputy Chief of the Special Operations Bureau Fritz Howard, Ransford Doherty as Coroner’s Investigator Kendall, Kathe Mazur as DDA Andrea Hobbs, Rene Rosado as Gus Wallace, Dawnn Lewis as Patrice Provenza and Bill Brochtrup as LAPD psychologist, Dr. Joe Bowman.

Created by James Duff, Major Crimes is produced by The Shephard/Robin Company and Walking Entropy, Inc., in association with Warner Bros. Television. James Duff, Greer Shephard & Michael M. Robin, Adam Belanoff, Mike Berchem and Duppy Demetrius serve as executive producers.

What do you think? Are you a fan of the Major Crimes TV show? Is this the right time to end the series? Would you have watched season seven?

If a show does not appeal to 12 year olds, it very rarely lasts!

I truly enjoyed Major Crimes and am disappointed that TNT has chosen to cancel it. Another wonderful show ending while more and more we are being subjected to reality shows, sci-fi and reboots. In the last couple of years, several fine dramas have been cancelled in favor of shows that make no sense with less viewership. Every season I find myself watching fewer and fewer network shows.

NINE COMMENTS STATING SHOCK AND DISAPPOINTMENT WITHIN TWO AND A HALF HOURS ! EACH OF US SUPPORTING THE OTHERS VIEWS AND COMMENTS. DOESN’T THAT SAY SOMETHING? SOMEHOW TNT HAS TO GET BACK TO THE GOAL OF KEEPING THE VIEWERS HAPPY!

I don’t really know is any large organization really truly listens. Consider our political system at this time. No one listens.

How in Heaven’s name can you print this? ~ “Since its chart-topping debut in 2012, Major Crimes has consistently ranked as one of cable TV’s most-watched drama series! In its most recent season and spring run on TNT, the series reached an average 7.7M viewer per episode across linear, VOD, and digital platforms.” Then follow up with the news that you are planning to close the door to Season Seven? I JUST DO NOT GET IT! You have a winner, play it out and keep the viewers happy!

That’s what I said! Whoever is running TNT channel is stupid. I mean, who cancels one of their highest rated shows. I hope another channel picks it up!!

Can’t believe TNT is doing this!! You used to have great shows– now you are cancelling one of the last shows worth watching on your network! The only show left that I like is The Librarians and I’m sure you will cancel it after this season since it’s taken over a year for you to do a season 4. Anything good you all cancel it!!!

I like the Librarians to0. Me and my 27-year-old son who moved to KCMO last year for an IT job always watched it together now we watch it apart and talk about it on the phone. And you’re probably right about TNT pulling it after this season.

We loved ‘The Closer’ and never missed it, including whenever it was shown in reruns. After it ended, we were thrilled to move to ‘Major Crimes’ and to have the same cast, with the exception of losing Brenda and Will Pope. But Mary McDonnell as Captain Rayder was a joy, and built her own loyal following. Having that cast gone, and all those interesting storylines… wow, that is very disappointing. We never miss the show on CW on Saturdays and Sundays. Guess we’ll have to buy the dvds so we can continue to watch the show, as we did with… Read more »

You guys suck. When The Closer (which I loved) ended, I was thrilled that Major Crimes was going to follow, with my favorite characters (aside from Kyra Sedgewick). And I wasn’t disappointed. I LOVED IT. I completely loved the Rusty part of the show and was happy they continued it throughout the seasons. I wait with anticipation for every season to come back – and now you’re telling me it’s ending after 7? WHY???????????????????????

I quit watching when it became the Rusty show, he had his nose in everything, didn’t like HIS character, or his loser mom. Too bad, because I LOVED Cpt. Rayder, Provenza, Flynn, Julio & Fritz, and the storylines otherwise. The Stroh storyline got too long-winded & boring. Good luck to all the actors, hope they find NEW roles soon, will miss the funny biz with Flynn & Provenza.

It’s the network we want reading our comments, NOT the cast, they have no control over what TNT chooses to do.

I am sad to hear that Major Crimes will not be back for a 7th season. It is one of the few quality dramas on TV these days. I love each and every character-

This show needed to get off TNT. TNT/Kevin Reilly are nothing but a bunch of ageist, unappreciative fools of their fans. Hopefully we can find it a new home! Sorry, but 10 million viewers and the second most watched show on cable can’t be wrong. We know that some network would be appreciative of us and we will fight to find it…unless the cast or James doesn’t want to continue. F @@@ TNT.

I am absolutely gutted by this!! But also know that it’s time to end it!
They had an amazing run, and I will miss them. I would hate to see them go out with a whimper.
Hopefully it will go out with a bang!
All the best to this cast and crew! Especially Mary McDonnell and Tony Denison!
You will be missed!!

Too few crime dramas are worth my time, but Major Crimes is/was a must to watch. What gives with TNT? Can’t they tolerate a show that’s a hit!!!! How many shows is this now since TNT has decided to cancel it? I do wish that some other network, cable, etc., would pick it up.

I wouldn’t mind it ending so much if TNT replaced it with another similar show like the network replaced The Closer with Major Crimes when Kyra Sedgwick wanted to leave to pursue other roles and direct. It has been so wonderful having strong women in both leading and supporting roles in both shows rather than the bimbos in most of the other crime or detective shows on TNT and other networks that act more like sex-obsessed (dumb blonde type characters) that spend more time romping in the hay with their partners than chasing bad guys). As women, we deserve shows… Read more »
