TV show description:
A World War II period drama, My Mother and Other Strangers centers on the Coyne family and their neighbors. In 1943, the addition of a United States Army Air Force (USAAF) airfield and its 4,000 personnel has a huge impact on Moybeg, a nearby rural Northern Ireland parish.
The story unfolds from the point of view of ten-year-old Francis Coyne (Nevin; with adult voice-overs by Hinds). Among the many strangers in his life are the amiable, affectionate Americans. And, as an innocent child, he fails to realize how little he truly knows about his own parents and their marriage.
Francis’ English mother, Rose (Morahan), is a school teacher, who also runs the grocery shop next to her husband Michael’s (McDonnell) pub. In addition to Francis, Michael and Rose have two other children, 16-year-old Emma (O’Higgins) and little Kate (Carlin), who is just seven years of age.
Despite the fact that her husband’s family has lived there for generations, Rose has never really felt like she belongs in Moybeg. From her proper manner of speech, to her love of literature, and broader interests, she feels unconnected and like an outsider among the villagers.
The Coynes have long been a prominent local family and despite his workload on their farm, and running the local pub, Michael is frequently preoccupied with maintaining his standing. He often fails to pay Rose the sort of attention she deserves.
Handsome Captain Ronald Dreyfuss (Staton) serves as the USAAF’s liaison officer to the community. It’s a necessary position since the U.S. bomber base has not only taken over much of their lands but has also introduced a huge number of young, more progressive military men and women, who create some friction in this Ulster farming community.
When Captain Dreyfuss approaches the Coyne family for assistance in reaching out to the locals, he and Rose feel a deep, immediate connection, despite their mutual reserve. Since his responsibilities keep him in her orbit, they soon learn they share many interests in common. Although they struggle against their feelings, their emotional attachment becomes obvious to those around them.
As a morally upstanding woman, Rose does not want to betray Michael but is overwhelmed by her feelings for Ronald. Since she identifies with Catherine Earnshaw, in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, the question remains: will their end be as tragic as Catherine and Heathcliff’s?
Series Finale:
Episode #5
See if Tillie can stop the captain and Rose from making a terrible mistake.
First aired: July 16, 2017.
What do you think? Do you like the My Mother and Other Strangers TV show? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Please renew this series. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Please bring back the series My Mother and Other Strangers for a second season and more. I really enjoyed the characters and the stories and the setting.
Yes, bring back My Mother and Other Strangers! I want to see what happens between Rose and Captain Dreyfus. Also, I would like for Home Fires to return.
Why are the best series canceled? Some of the dumbest ones keep coming back.
Great show please please bring back my mother and other strangers
Great show. Please bring it back for season two.
great show, please renew. Don’t leave us hanging as in Home Fires – we need closure
Love it. Please renew as viewers will want to see what happens to Rose and the American captain. My husband and I were so disappointed when it was not on these last two weeks.
I hope My Mother and Other Strangers will be renewed, for it is an excellent history of WWII as it played out in Ireland. The Brits and the Americans had bases there, and contacts with the villagers brought about stress and attempts to get along. The love interest between Rose and the American lieutenant is a true attempt to get it right.
Yes, please renew it. Very good!
Please renew this wonderful series, my daughter and l both love it, great acting, and the romance between Rose and the Captain is very romantic
Five episodes of perfection and then I discover there are no more episodes available…sad. BBC has a winner with this series. I hope they realize that people still prefer quality versus the mediocrity that Hollywood produces….please renew immediately!!
P. S. Home Fires was another good one that seemed too short. Meanwhile, Grantchester is by turns boring or annoying. And the department store soap opera–please! Anglophiles may be the bulk of the PBS Sunday evening audience, but they’re not the entire audience, but even for them, a UK location doesn’t make up for poor stories.
What?! It just stopped in the middle? We tuned in for it last week, and it wasn’t there. Thought it might be a one-week change. Now I see that it’s not scheduled for this week, either. So disappointed! So many NON-Masterpieces being called masterpieces, and now a really good story just dropped. PBS, are you dying?
Please renew. Loved season 1. Great story, great acting, well cast.
Look forward to season 2.
Renewing this series is a must! It is a wonderful story with an incredible back drop, beautifully acted and engaging on so many levels. The audience deserves to learn more about these characters… although I am rooting for Rose and her dashing Heathcliff, the Captain, I want closure! Please renew this fantastic series! It is one of the best on PBS. Thank you for bringing it to our homes!
Great show. Beautiful characterization and very well written and acted. Keep it going please.
