canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

The Chew: Should the ABC Daytime Series Have Been Cancelled?

by Trevor Kimball, June 15, 2018

The Chew TV show on ABC: canceled, no season 8 (canceled or renewed?)

(ABC / Lorenzo Bevilaqua)

Today, ABC airs the final episode of their daytime series, The Chew. Last month, the network announced that the cooking-themed talk show had been cancelled after more than 1,400 episodes. Will you miss it?  Was this the right decision?

Launching in September 2011, The Chew replaced the All My Children soap opera after its 41 years on the network. A talk show that incorporates cooking and lifestyle-related segments, the series was initially hosted by  Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon. Oz departed the show after six seasons and Batali left following sexual misconduct allegations in December 2017.

ABC decided to cancel The Chew in order to expand their Good Morning America series to three hours. NBC’s Today show has had a third hour (with various titles) since October 2000. The current incarnation is Megyn Kelly Today.

While the third hour of Today typically followed the regular program’s two-hour broadcast, hour three of Good Morning America will air separately, in the afternoon. The new hour of GMA is expected to be taped and not presented live, as the regular program is.  ABC is making this move as Today has been taking the lead in various demographics in the morning ratings race.

If ABC had wanted to expand GMA to three hours, couldn’t they have replaced either The View or Live with Kelley and Ryan? That was unlikely to happen since both perform better in the ratings than The Chew. In particular, The View has been growing its audience and has been seeing its best ratings since the 2014-15 season (a rarity in today’s landscape). Meanwhile, The Chew has been in last place, ranking 13th out of 13 daytime series.

While ABC may have high hopes for a third hour of GMA, they no doubt have an uphill battle ahead. Daytime audiences often don’t like change and some viewers still hold a grudge against The Chew for replacing All My Children. Time will tell if the new hour of GMA will fare any better than The Chew did.

What do you think? Do you think that ABC should have cancelled The Chew TV series? If not, what could they have done to boost the ratings? Will you check out a third hour of Good Morning America?

No I’m very upset that the chew has been cancelled. No I will not watch the 3rd hour of GMA. I’m a Today watcher anyway. Please find a way to bring it back., but whatever you do don’t cancel GH.

THE LAST THING WE WANT OR NEED IS ANOTHER HOUR OF GMA. The CHEW offered viewers 1 hour without politics, crime, etc…..The CHEW allowed viewers to laugh, learn, and relax with 3 of my FAVORITE TV personalities. Michael, Carla, and Clinton…you have made a HUGE mistake….please Reconsider this awful decision.

I am saddened at the loss of the Chew! It was truly a good decent show —-no politics-crime etc! I watch GMA but I don’t think I could watch an additional hour of that show where all they will do is rehash statements that have already been discussed—too much sadness already in this world this show brightened my day—every day I will truly miss it!

Absolutely should be cancelled I’m not at all surprised ! It was an hour of playtime for the hosts they made fools of themselves what happened to cooking ? It was Aldo a platform for guests to promote movies , books ,etc the host were all star struck well what about the viewing audience ?
Michael he has plenty of work Clinton he will get picked up to do what he does best and be the sophisticated guy that he used to be

You are so wrong!!! The hosts were fun and loveable, not fools! I learned a lot about cooking techniques, even though I don’t intend to become a “professional” chef. I loved the guests and their promotions to see what is upcoming in the entertainment world, that’s pretty much expected. The majority of the viewing audience also love seeing these personalities (on screen as well as viewers at home). Of course, Clinton, Michael and Carla will find plenty of other work, because they are spectacular at what they do! But I will miss this wonderful show, this funny, relaxing break in… Read more »

The Chew should NOT have been cancelled. What is there to daytime tv? Judge shows, soaps, games shows, The Chew provided much needed change. BOO ABC

It shouldn’t be canceled. The show has only gotten better since Mario’s exit. They are the most cheerful group on TV. I hope that the website will stay online for recipes and creative inspiration.

I agree! These 3 hosts are perfect! The show is even better. Mario may be a great chef and Daphne a great person, but Michael, Clinton and Carla really make these show! I need to hurry to print off all their recipes!

No it should NOT have been cancelled! It has been a breath of fresh air, now they are replacing it with yet another hour of GMA with more news! We have enough news shows that, for the most part are depressing!!! If the hosts on to do more cooking shows , I will definitely watch it, but I will not be watching GMA!!

The Chew is unique, fun and my favorite daytime show. We don’t need more “Good Morning America” type shows…boring and just like all the others. I will not watch.

The Chew should not have been cancelled. I won’t watch the GMA third hour. It doesn’t make any sense to put the 3rd hour on 4 hours after the first 2 hours air. It won’t be live so what how will it be relevant? Plus I am not happy with ABC for cancelling the show so I hope GMA fails. I will watch the Food network or anything else.

I don’t think they should have canceled TheChew! It was so entertainting, fun and informative. I enjoyed seeing the celebs too! We lesrned how to truely do something that’s hardly done or seen today and that was being a family inthe kitchen and estimg together around the table. We don’t need more ‘news’ we need more “family” time!

I will miss the chew and cast very much. I will not watch GMA I will also watch Food network or HGTV. You have GMA for 2 hours then have the news for another hour. Why would I watch another hour. Maybe Food Network will pick up the show and correct your faux pas. Personally, I’ll watch the other networks before watching ABC again.
