This historical drama series tells the controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII’s pontificate.
Born Lenny Belardo, Pope Pius XIII (Jude Law) is the former Archbishop of New York. He is a complex and conflicted character who’s so conservative in his choices as to border on obscurantism. Yet, he’s also full of compassion towards the weak and poor.
Newly elected, he defies expectations as he settles in at the Vatican to begin his reign. The youngest and first American pope in history, Lenny’s ascension was orchestrated by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Voiello (Silvio Orlando).
Voiello mistakenly believed that the young pope would follow his lead on policy and protocol. Instead, Lenny shuns Voiello and tasks his confessor, Don Tommaso (Marcello Romolo), to share details on the private thoughts and motives of those in his inner circle.
Meanwhile, as Cardinal Spencer (James Cromwell), Lenny’s onetime mentor, stews about being passed over as pontiff, the new pope flies in Sister Mary (Diane Keaton) to serve as his chief advisor. She raised him since he was delivered to an orphanage at seven.
While Sister Mary urges Lenny to put aside dark memories and focus on leading his billion followers, the young pope shows no inclination towards making himself available, either to the College of Cardinals or to the masses.
Episode #10 — Tenth Episode
Reunited with a changed Gutierrez at the Vatican, the pope considers an appropriate course of action regarding Archbishop Kurtwell. Father Tomasso gets a promotion, while Sister Mary takes on a new role. The prospect of a reconciliation leads the young pope to make an unexpected change of travel plans – and policy.

I cannot believe that this series has been cancelled!! Please renew this show! Jude Law is mesmerizing as the Young Pope, his performance is one of the best I’ve ever seen. All of the characters are wonderfully portrayed with faceted human good and evil spiritual warfare. This show deserves another season!

Loved this series! very Intelligent written script and acting was the BEST I have encountered in a long time! Easy for me to follow ! Not too many shows that captivate my attention these days, but this one did for me from the start. Hoping there will be more seasons to enjoy ! Jude Law was Brilliant and amusing and so was the entire cast of actors! Well Done!
I loved the series! I read posted comments and really not sure the people understood the whole purpose or concept of the series, addressing topics & how they were handled. I was Catholic so I was able to understand, embrace and it helped me further believe in the power of GOD through nature and human relationships.
Love The Young Pope. Hope there is a second season.
excellent what an exercise for ones brain it stirred up religious and personal emotions I was disappointed in the ending there were alot of unanswered questions
The first episode was difficult for me to follow. But, as I continued to watch, I really liked how, ‘The Young Pope’, become a very likeable, person. I was very disappointed in the way, ‘The Young Pope’, ended.

I found the first episode all over the place making it extremely hard to follow. It never caught on for me and my wife and we ultimately turned the channel with approximately 15 minutes left in the first episode. With the commercials advertising the series we had high expectations and really were looking forward to it. Too bad. It was a real disappointment for my wife and me and don’t anticipate watching any more.
