President Kirkman’s term is over. Last year, ABC cancelled the Designated Survivor TV show after two low-rated seasons. Netflix picked up the series for a third season but has now decided not to order a fourth season.
A political thriller, Designated Survivor stars Kiefer Sutherland, Natascha McElhone, Adan Canto, LaMonica Garrett, Kal Penn, Maggie Q, Malik Yoba, Paulo Costanzo, Zoe McLellan, Ben Lawson, Tanner Buchanan, and Mckenna Grace. The conspiracy drama series centers on Tom Kirkman (Sutherland). After an attack on Capitol Hill wipes out the line of succession, this HUD Secretary becomes President of the United States.
Sutherland recently said that he was doubtful that a fourth season would happen. He explained, “I don’t think series four is going to happen. We had an amazing experience with Netflix, and a kind of freedom that was wonderful – but the reality is, because the contracts were so complicated and different from network television to Netflix etc, they didn’t book a lot of the actors that were on the show, and they took other jobs, and I don’t blame them for a second for that.”
Today, Netflix made the cancellation official with a statement: “We are proud to have offered fans a third season of Designated Survivor, and will continue to carry all three seasons for years to come. We’re especially thankful to star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who brought passion, dedication and an unforgettable performance as President Kirkman. We’re also grateful to showrunner/executive producer Neal Baer for his guiding vision and steady hand, creator/executive producer David Guggenheim and EPs Mark Gordon, Suzan Bymel, Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood and Peter Noah along with the cast and crew who crafted a compelling and satisfying final season.”

What do you think? Did you enjoy the Designated Survivor TV show? Did you like or dislike the “adult” language in season three? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season on Netflix?
Love that show, so annoying and disappointing that there will not be a season 4, living with a cliffhanger,
I am saddened that there will not be a forth series this is a rare emotional series, which questions the whole human race morale’s. Third series did have unwarranted adult language which could should removed as it put off targeted market to watch.
I will greatly miss this series it was full of real colourful character’s with thought provoking real issues and values, we should all live by. There is so much scope for a forth series, please bring it back netflix
We loved Designated Survivor and watched it every night – sometimes two episodes. But it took a wrong turn in Series 3 with a stark contrast to the previous seasons by using unnecessarily foul language. They also seemed to be trying to fire on all cylinders in including all the controversial issues that we are force-fed every day on the news. I appreciated the thought-provoking, interwoven plots of the first two seasons and we questioned the wisdom of turning away from their original story line – and now they’re gone!
Enjoyed first two seasons, but was very disappointed in the third seasons. Gay sex, vulgar swearing & language has ruined it for us. Not even going to finish season 3!!!
I loved
designated survivor and am so sad to see it go. So much up in the air with great possibilities ahead.
NetFlix ruined the show in Season 3. It was one of my favorites as an intense action-like drama… Netflix,, we are not all driven by social controversy, sex and smut. There is still an audience that appreciates intelligence. Also, thanks for killing off one of the best characters in the show… that was the icing on the cake.
This was one if not the best series I have seen in a very long time . It was like a book that you couldn’t put down . I watched all 3 seasons in one week as. I couldn’t stop watching it . It was so dramatic , intense . Great acting . I can not believe no one is picking this up for season 4 also leaving us in a lurch like this is really rotten . Season 3 left everything up in the air . So disappointed. No fair to make a show and story line like this… Read more »
My brother-in-law put me on to this show. Very intense one of only one the only shows I’ve enjoyed with my wife of 50 years. sorry to hear about the shows canceled by Netflix.
In my opinion, the Netflix season went way overboard with the adult language. I didn’t count, but the f-word and variants of it must have been spoken 10-15 or so times each episode (including at least one instance of “m*****f****r). The characters took on a near-childish quality with their new-found freedom to use foul language, like a group of adolescents who were testing the boundaries of their independence.
This resulted in a noticeably unrealistic contrast in the characters’ personalities between the two earlier seasons and season three—the professionals versus the adolescents.
I totally agree!
Please continue this series. My husband loves this show as for I. Why show all these silly shows and not something with some teeth.
I love this show I have family and friends who love this show. We all hate to see it end.
I really like Designated Survivor. I wish Netflix would reconsider cancelling it. I will be rewatching the entire series.
I was so excited Netflix picked up this program. But now cancelling it after just having one season??!?? Why did you bother to get the fans of the show excited when you are just keeping for one season, was it to get new subscribers? If it was that stinks! I personally will have to re-evaluate my Netflix subscription especially since you have raised the price from my original $9.99 a month now it’s $14.99 with nothing really improved to show for it. To many other streaming services out there to check into. Thanks for one more season (10 shows actually).… Read more »
All Netflix shows are ten episodes only the only reason that we got 20 plus episodes was because of ABC all Netflix shows are ten episodes only
I think it’s wrong. They had the audience, if they didn’t, Netflix wouldn’t have picked them up at all. They need to at least do a season 4 to give it a proper ending.
Th reasonings for cancellation do seem rather weak.
