Extinct has gone the way of the woolly mammoth. BYUtv has cancelled its Extinct TV show after one season of ten episodes. In a refreshing turn of events, the non-profit network issued a statement acknowledging the Extinct cancellation, and didn’t try to reframe it as as a “limited event series” which was always intended to be a single season program.
A post-apocalyptic science fiction drama from creators Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston, Extinct stars Chad Michael Collins, Victoria Atkin, Jaclyn Hales, Yorke Fryer, Jack Depew, Matthew Bellows, and Jake Stormoen. The BYUtv series kicks off with aliens regenerating the human race, 400 years after its extinction. Now that they’re back, those who have returned embark upon quest to understand what is going on and why they are here.
Here’s the Extinct cancellation announcement, from BYUtv:
The BYUtv original scripted sci-fi series, Extinct, will not be renewed for a second season
Dear Extinct viewers,
Since the season finale in November, many of you have inquired about a second season of Extinct. This is a decision we have carefully considered since this breakout series launched earlier last year. As with any program or series on BYUtv, decisions like this are difficult, and never made without considerable analysis. After much discussion and debate, we have decided to not renew Extinct for a second season.
We recognize many of you will be disappointed to hear this. Like you, we understand the feelings when a beloved show is canceled. Unfortunately, the approval and cancelation cycle is part of the ebb and flow of any television network. But we wanted you to understand why we reached this decision. Unlike most networks who make renewal decisions based solely on audience size and the resulting financial impact of those ratings, we as a non-profit, cause-based network have the luxury of using broader, more qualitative data points. For example, we weigh the content and message of the series itself, its resonance with fans, its uniqueness in the TV landscape, and ultimately its ability to live up to our strategic aims as a content source that connects with families.
To be sure, Extinct was a bold experiment into this genre for BYUtv. And we were proud to bring this series to you. We’re grateful to our talented production partners on Extinct including GoFilms, Taleswapper, Orson Scott Card, and the remarkable cast and tireless crew of the series. Most of all, we appreciate you—the passionate fans of the show. While the Extinct chapter may be ending, the good news is that BYUtv is more committed than ever to producing unique, innovative, and purposeful stories that families can watch together.
Thank you again for your loyalty and trust as a viewer. And please stay tuned as we pledge to bring you even more world-class television for families in 2018 and beyond.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Extinct TV series? Should BYUtv have cancelled or renewed Extinct for a second season. Sound off, in the comments.
i am done watching byu tv. what a waste of time.
What? 🙁
I have only seen two episodes but I am already hooked. I just stopped viewing a sci-fi show on Netflix because it was inappropriate and not uplifting. It was so refreshing to find this show that is uplifting, intriguing, and compelling to watch. I don’t think anyone would be disappointed if BYUtv changes its mind and brings the show back. Please do!!!
My wife and i loved extinct, please reconsider
There’s a petition! Let’s spread the word and see if it’ll help!

i want to add my plea to reconsider the cancellation. the story line and excellent production reach the younger generation in the way they process religion. the message of life made easy by a companion versus doing the right thing is needed now more than ever.
Yet another channel letting the viewers down. No point watching anything else they make if they don’t have a commitment to their shows and viewers
Amen
At least give us an ending a two hour finale would be an acceptable compromise to another full season
It did have an ending, they destroyed the companion. Remember the pond they went into and put the weapon in its place and down came all the crystals.
I wholeheartedly agree. There was too much good in it, and too much potential to just drop us like that. At bare minimum, they need to finish what they started. Super bummed, hope they change their mind.
Very disappointed. Excellent writing, good cast, great music. It was left on a great cliffhanger and had great potential. I would almost prefer it had not shown, rather than tease us and abandon us after such a short run.
Absolutely! I got so in to it and now I’m left hanging. Was that Jax’s wife reborn? Why was Duncan in spacecraft with Eleanor? Had they been alive 400 years just waiting to watch drama unfold? Seriously hate that I got sucked in before realizing it had been cancelled.
Anouther good show gone.
I think that by UTV has made a big mistake all of us viewers need to stand up and let by UTV know for all of us stand on the show I watch the first episode tonight I couldn’t stop I watched all 10 episodes in one day I think they need to reconsider this could be a very long ongoing series with a very loyal following
With four small children and 60+ hour work weeks, date nights are difficult to come by for my husband and me. Extinct became our at-home date night. It was just the right balance of sci-fi, drama, good values and creative content that I could trust to be appropriate and keep my husband’s attention.
Just after having seen Dark Matter cancelled (on a riveting cliff hanger!), Marvel’s Inhumans (OK, not too sad about that), we were just about getting into this, and it also bites the dust, at this rate our TV viewing of an hour a day is going might just bite the dust too…
I am very disappointed that the network decided to cancel this show. I hope another network will try and renew this show.
My family and I really enjoyed this show. I liked how it was subtle but significant about the importance of families.

Sad day! We loved it
It was ok for a very low budget Scifi show, always sad when any Scifi gets cancelled
